Fall is in the air, and soon we will begin theprocess of wardrobe switching – movingaside the summer clothing to make room

for cooler weather items. Itis also a time that theholiday decorations beginto surface and that longignored storage area is like atime bomb waiting todetonate. This is a perfecttransition time to really lookat items you no longer needor wear. This process couldcreate a pile larger than ajumbo jet, and then you arehit with the dilemma ofwhat to do with thosediscards. Do you sell, toss ordonate? If you areconsidering donating itemsto your favorite localcharity, or think you maywant to take a stab atconsignment, take time tocheck out the tips below.

• When choosing which items to give away, donate items that charities can sell to make aprofit. Think about what it is that you aredonating and if it can truly benefit thecharity. Most, if not all, have limited fundsand disposing of items that are of no use tothem and costs them money. Charities willappreciate and benefit from yourthoughtfulness.

• With recent recalls on children’s items (toys, baby equipment) be sure to see if the itemsyou want to donate are not included on anygovernment list. Some charities will notaccept these items.

• Clothing items, which are stained or torn, really should not be considered fordonation or resale. Bear in mind as well, that if you paid an exorbitant amount for apiece of clothing, and it is used, you maynot be able sell it for what you think youwill. You have to accept this aspect of resale.A $200 blouse does not necessarily equateto a $200 resale value.

• Think of where you would like to donate orconsign items. Baby items can be given to

pregnancy help centers. Cell phones can bedonated to various charities like Cell Phonesfor Soldiers or a local battered women’s

shelter. Dress for Success isa terrific program forwomen’s business clothing.Non-profits or schools mayconsider your unwantedand gently used holidaydecorations. Consign atshops that specialize inyour items for the best rateof success.• Never assume your itemsare accepted for donation.Check the charity’s websiteor give them a call if youare uncertain of a particularitem. Likewise for resale –there should be a marketfor it. Just because youthink it has value, may notbe the case. It really doesbenefit you to do somehomework ahead of time.“One man’s junk” may not

be the ‘treasure’ you think, and be just junk.• Is the clean out process a daunting task? Set

up a ‘donation’ or ‘resale’ basket in yourcloset and try and donate/consign once amonth instead of seasonally or annually. This keeps the closets from overflowing andmay inspire you to do it more often. It will beeasier to keep track of the value of what youare donating or consigning as well. Breakingthis task down into a monthly “to-do” willmake it manageable and not asoverwhelming.

• Make it easy on yourself – if there is apick-up service available use it. This willkeep you motivated to keep the processmoving along.

TAX TIP: Make your donations work for you in more ways than one. Keep all receiptsfor tax purposes. Not sure of the worth? keep track electronically on-line atwww.itsdeductibleonline.com by Intuit. Thisprogram will calculate what your items arecurrently worth.

Most of us, at one time or anotherhave donated to a charitableorganization those items we no

longer need or use. While the idea behindthe donation is charitable, many of us missthe opportunity to save a little on our taxesat the same time. Properly documenting thedonation can result in additional write-offscome tax time. Non-Cash Charitabledonations, along with Cash donations, property taxes, mortgage interest, andmedical expenses above the IRS limitationthreshold, make up most of the itemizeddeductions many of us deduct on ourFederal and State Income Tax Returns.

When making donations, a few simplesteps can make the donation much easier torecord and support come tax time. Use yourdigital camera to take pictures of the itemsbeing donated. Special emphasis should beplaced on photographing new or unuseditems to show that they were still in originalwrapping. This type of documentation notonly provides you with proof of what wasdonated, it lends additional proof as toquantity and quality of the items donated(were the items new, like new, slightly used,or well worn). Since most digital camera’salso date stamp the images, you will alsohave a dated receipt that shouldapproximate the date shown on the receiptfrom the charitable organization.

When valuing clothing, personal items, and furniture, keep in mind that the FairMarket Value of the item is the amount thatyou are allowed to deduct. Used clothing isworth far less than what you actually paidfor it. Also, keep in mind that only clothing

in good or better condition can be deducted.A good judge of values would be the thriftstore prices that you find similar items for. While no list can provide you with what youshould deduct, valuation approximations onSalvation Army or Goodwill websites mayassist you in arising at the value of yourdonation.

A very important part of the process isto make sure you keep theacknowledgement receipt the charitableorganization gives you. Even though mostof them are very vague, they should becompleted in their entirety and signed bythe recipient, thus establishing the date ofthe donation.

I would also suggest reading IRSPublication 561 – Determining the Value ofDonated Property – to help you betterunderstand what you can deduct.Remember, there is nothing wrong withletting Uncle Sam subsidize your charitablecontributions. If you feel guilty, just donatethe tax savings to a local charity, and theyreceive the benefit of your efforts.

Here at Crayons Children’s Resalewe are no garage sale!

Most of our merchandise looks brand newbecause children grow out of their clothes so fast.We also see baby gear come in, such as cribs andstrollers as they are also used for such a short time.

Many people have the belief that they will belooked down on if others find out that they resaleshop. That feeling needs to be thrown out thewindow. As we see the economy changing daily,we urge families to shop resale rather than retail sothey can see their money go farther.

With many children going to school, daycareprograms or even just needing play wear, there isno need to pay retail for those items.

We carry a wide selection of school uniforms, clothes, maternity, hair bows, shoes, back packs, cribs, strollers, car seats, high chairs, toys and more.

We have shoppers who drive over 1 hour tocome shop/consign with us. We see moms, dads, grandparents, child care centers, school teachersand even churches needing to make their dollargo farther.

We are very picky on our consignments as weknow what the customers are looking for.

We believe in looking retail, not garage sale!
