Upon reaching Avignon, set on a scenic bend of the Rhône River, you will have a good grasp of the area's fascinating history, delivered in detail byyour guide. While a marvelous city of art and culture, Avignon is most famous for being home to seven popes the 14th century, who chose to reside hererather than in Rome. The incredible Palace of the Popes was constructed primarily during the papacies of Benedict XII and Clement VI and was one ofthe largest buildings of its time. You'll visit this fascinating fortress-cum-residence, which consists of sumptuously decorated chambers, chapels,and passages. Roussillon is situated on the highest hills between theCoulon Valley and the Vaucluse plateau, and much of its architecture is beautifully colored with earthen tones from the nearby ochre quarry. Incontrast, most of the buildings in the village of Gordes are constructed of white stone and rise in picturesque tiers above the Imergue valley on theedge of the Vaucluse plateau. Meandering through its labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets is an absolute joy, as you walk along vaultedpassageways, centuries-old arcades and rampart ruins.

A drive through the ravishing Provence region is a wonderful prelude to your arrival in Le Castellet, a traditional Provencal village perched onwooded hills overlooking fertile vineyards. This remarkable stronghold of a city, formerly owned by the Lords of Les Baux, boasts well-preservedramparts, a carefully restored church and a castle dating back to the 11th century. Inside the castle, which must be entered through two fortifiedgates, enjoy an informative walking tour and see how the imposing building has been converted into the town hall.

Port Grimaud was designed in theearly 1960s by the distinguished French architect Francois Spoerry, who created an elaborate system of canals and islands, much like Venice, but on asmaller scale. Renowned for its multi-hued houses covered with Roman tiles, contemporary Port Grimaud is easy to walk, especially since cars arerestricted. The scenery and atmosphere change dramatically at your next stop - the village of Grimaud, which is nestled in the heart of the MauresMountains and maintains a uniquely medieval character. Admire the superbly renovated old houses. Explore the winding alleyways, which are enlivened bylocal craftsmen, and stop at the remarkable fountain in the center of the village. In many areas, it's as if time has stood still.

Homer's epic poem "Odysseus" depicts a sinuous and seductive section of Italy's coastline as the mythical land of the Sirens. Today, this area isknown to the world as the Amalfi Coast. The village of Amalfi is perhaps the coastline's most beautiful town, but the curvy coastline makes driving(and touring) somewhat of a challenge. This is why we are glad that our local experts have put together a wine tour that visits some wonderful andnearby historical sites and food venues.

The group will leave Amalfi in the morning and drive the short distance down the coast to Minori to visit an ancient Roman maritime villa of the 1stcentury A.D. This is a splendid example of Roman construction, discovered in 1932 and it still retains traces of its ancient water heating system andsome mosaics. Then it's a short walk to a local Limoncello producer (who still makes this liqueur by hand) to see the process and taste the deliciousresults.

Driving a short distance from the coast is the village of Tramonti. Here you will visit a small family-run winery, known for producing fine wines fromheritage vines, some of which are more than 100 years old.

After a short walk through their vineyards you will be welcomed for a multi-course lunch inside the "Osteria" (a traditional restaurant) belonging tothis winemaking family. Here the women of the family will let you try authentic Tramonti recipes and products served with two different varietals ofwines.

After lunch you will return to Amalfi with some free time for you to explore the city streets and shop on your own, before its time to re-board theship.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2-hours of easy to moderate walking; however, there is a steep incline to negotiate at the entrance tothe winery and uneven surfaces to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and is not considered suitable for those with mobilityconcerns. SORRENTO/CAPRI, ITALY

SRT-001 A CRUISE TO CAPRI


A short, but scenic cruise on a jetfoil across the Bay of Naples, followed by motorcoach ride, brings you to the lovely hilltop village of Anacapri onthe chic Isle of Capri. Here, you may choose to ride a chairlift up to Monte Solaro for a breathtaking view of the bay. As an alternative, you mayjoin the guide for a tour of the famed Villa San Michele. This wonderful old house, surrounded by fragrant gardens, belonged to the Swedish doctor andauthor, Axel Munthe, who wrote a popular book about its history. The existing home was built on the ruins of a Roman emperor's villa. Now a museum,Villa San Michele is filled with collections of paintings, furniture and ancient Roman artifacts. During your free time at Anacapri, you might strollthe piazzetta, shop, or enjoy lunch. At the end of your tour take the famous funicular from La Piazzetta, the main square of Capri, to the pierlanding area. Then, rejoin your mini-bus and travel to the Marina Grande where you will board a hydrofoil for the return to Sorrento.

Please note: During high season, Capri can be extremely crowded, and long lines are common and unavoidable. Long lines can also be expected at thehydrofoil and mini-bus stations. Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes for this excursion which involves walking over uneven surfaces andclimbing stairs. This tour is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. A visit to the Blue Grotto is notincluded in this tour.

SRT-002 ANCIENT POMPEII


After a scenic drive along the Bay of Naples, you will arrive at the remarkable ruins of Pompeii at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius. The excavated ruins ofPompeii are considered one the finest representations of an Italian city at the height of the Roman Empire. Walking through the city, which was buriedin ash from the devastating volcanic eruption in 79 A.D., you will gain great insight into what ancient life must have been like here. Time seemsfrozen, as you observe the eerie plaster casts of numerous victims, who are caught in their final moment of life. Now a World Heritage Site, Pompeiiis filled with aristocratic villas, temples and a forum, which was the heart of the city. This coastal area has thrived for centuries, and much of itslure is natural beauty, which you will see on the return trip, which passes the seaside resorts of Castellamare and Sorrento. This charming tour is packed with an orientation of some of Naples' most enchanting sites as well as a demonstration of traditional pizza making.

Tendering to shore, you'll meet your motor coach and head off on an informative tour of the city which will introduce you to its monuments, importantbuildings, museums, shopping areas and main squares. Your tour will be complimented by the comprehensive narration provided by your professionalguide, sharing Naples' historical background and the reasons why so many visitors fall in love with the city.

Traveling along the beautiful coast of Posillipo, you'll enjoy marvelous panoramic vistas which include the charming Castel dell'Ovo and a brief photostop will be permitted to capture some of the outstanding scenery stretched out before you. Your next stop will be at the lovely Piazza Plebiscitowhere you will have an outside view of the Royal Palace, the San Carlo Opera House and the Galleria Umberto. Today, you'll have a fantastic opportunity toexperience this first-hand as you are treated to a demonstration by expert Pizzaioli (pizza makers) as they assemble entire pizzas on a marble counterright before your eyes.

Amazingly, the world's first true pizzeria, Antica Pizzeria Port'Alba, was opened here in 1830 and is still in business today. Contemporary Neapolitanpizzas continue to be prepared the same way they were 100 years ago. The first Margherita pizza was introduced here as well by Raffaele Esposito ofthe Pizzeria di Pietro e Basta Cosi, now called Pizzeria Brandi, when he baked pizza especially for visiting King Umberto I and Queen Margherita.Wanting to make the pizza more patriotic-looking, Raffaele used red tomato sauce, white mozzarella cheese and green basil leaves as toppings. QueenMargherita fell in love with Raffaele's special pizza and thus, Pizza Margherita was born, becoming an international standard.
