NWH-002 ROYAL MILE WALKING TOUR

Tour Price: $139.00

July 23, 2017 08:30 AMDate:

The best way to appreciate the historical past of Edinburgh is to explore the ̀ Royal Mile` on foot. This famous thoroughfare was the heart of the Old Town of Edinburgh during medieval times, and stretches from the high hillside setting of Edinburgh Castle for approximately one mile downhill to the Palace of Holyrood House. It is really a continuation of four streets joined together - the Castle Hill, the Lawnmarket, the High Street and the Canongate.

Transferring by coach to Edinburgh, your walking tour commences at the Castle's Esplanade, with imposing Edinburgh Castle looming above you. This impressive castle-fortress which stands high above the surrounding landscape at one end of the Royal Mile, is truly a landmark of considerable importance. From here, your route takes you past Gladstone's Land, where some of the features of this interesting, tall, early 17th century building are an outside staircase, arcaded ground floor, oak shutters, leaded glass, and crow-stepped gables.

Also seen is Lady Stair's House - now a literary museum dedicated to the works of Burns, Scott and Stevenson. This 17th century house can be seen from a secluded close that enters into a spacious courtyard. And then there is St. Giles Cathedral, with its crown spire as a much recognized landmark, standing adjacent to Parliament Square, where the buildings now house the Law Courts of Scotland.

A former resident of Edinburgh was famous church reformer John Knox, and his 16th century house has been rebuilt extensively through the years. Today it has a red-tiled gable roof, projecting timber gallery and outside stairs.

Other sites included on your tour are the Church of Canongate, where many historical figures are buried in the churchyard, and the Palace of Holyrood House. This magnificent palace is the British Monarch's official residence in Scotland and is closely associated with Mary Queen of Scots, who resided here for six tragic years, and Bonnie Prince Charlie. Your guided visit of the Palace will include the state apartments which are filled with tapestries, paintings and impressive furniture. Of special interest is the picture gallery with over 80 portraits of Scottish Monarchs.

At the conclusion of your walking tour, you will rejoin your coach for the transfer back to Leith.

Please note: This tour includes nearly 3 hours of walking, at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and is not considered suitable for those guests with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. Guests should be prepared for the possibility of rain. The order of sites visited may vary.

NWH-005 SCONE PALACE, CROWNING PLACE OF SCOTTISH KINGS

Tour Price: $139.00

July 23, 2017 08:30 AMDate:

Scone is a place that breathes history like nowhere else in Scotland. It is at the center of Scotland geographically, and at its center historically. Here, in the heartland of Scotland, also lies the heart of Scotland's history. The storytellers speak of Druids, of Romans, of fantastic glimpses of kings and king-making; of the high kings of the Picts in their `Kingdom of Scone`, and of Scotland's legendary kings like Macbeth and Robert the Bruce.

Traveling across the elegant expanse of the Forth Road Bridge, your coach travels in a northerly direction from Leith, heading out across the scenic rolling landscape. Poised above the River Tay, perhaps the greatest salmon river in the world, the Palace overlooks the routes north to the Highlands and east through Strathmore to the coast. The majestic Grampian mountains form a distant backdrop, and across the river stands the city of Perth.

As you begin your tour of Scone Palace you cannot help but become aware of the intrigues that history has bestowed on Scone. Indeed, Scone is truly the place where you mingle with the many legends of Scotland's past and it is here that Macbeth, King of Scots bled to death on the floor of Scone. Of all the many king-making inaugurations and coronations held in the Palace, King Robert the Bruce's is considered the most dramatic. Having slain his rival, he rode to Scone to be crowned by the Bishop of St. Andrews. In 1651 the last coronation took place at Scone Palace when King Charles II was crowned.

The legendary Stone of Scone, also known as the Stone of Destiny, was used in the coronations of the Kings of Scotland until the end of the 13th century and was kept at Scone for nearly 500 years. The Stone was seized by King Edward I in 1296 and taken to Westminster Abbey. The Stone of Scone was last used at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and today has been returned to the people of Scotland and forms part of the royal regalia at Edinburgh Castle.

Against this rich historical background, your tour of Scone Palace begins in the dining-room. This wonderful south-facing room, with its unique collection of large European ivories, can be quite breath-taking. In the Drawing Room you will find that the walls are clad in early 19th century silk and hung with a large pair of royal portraits of King George III and Queen Charlotte. The spacious library, with views over parkland pastures to the River Tay, now holds a fabulous collection of 18th and 19th century porcelain. The Ambassador's room, named after the 2nd Earl who was British Ambassador to France, has an 18th century splendid and regal royal bed - covered in three vast and magnificently worked coats of arms of King George III. In contrast is the spacious Inner Hall with its two beautiful 17th century carved oak fireplaces. Not to be missed is the Royal Gallery, where you can follow in the footsteps of many kings who have walked its 142 foot length of Scottish oak.

Before re-joining your coach for the return trip, you'll be able to explore part of the Palace grounds and delightful formal gardens where the lawns are home to free-roaming peacocks.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1 hour of walking. The tour is considered suitable for wheelchair guests who can make their way on and off the coach. Guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. Guests should be prepared for the possibility of rain. The order of sites visited may vary.

Your tour begins with a short drive into the center of Edinburgh, Scotland's bustling capital city. From your coach, enjoy panoramic views of some of the city's landmarks before making your way to Edinburgh Castle.

The unwritten history of Edinburgh goes back to the ancient British tribes who existed in clusters of wooden huts on the rocky slopes of the castle crag, choosing the windy heights for greater security. Arriving at the Castle, you will enter via the Esplanade, which slopes steeply towards the main gate. There is much to see within the castle, including the 15th century Old Royal Palace in which are housed the Scottish Crown Jewels. The amazing regalia on display in the Crown Room have their origins in medieval times. This intriguing castle has without doubt, witnessed many tense moments in its thousand year history.

Following your visit, you'll re-join your coach and travel through the Old Town, descending eastwards along the ridge from the castle. This is the historical area known as ̀ Royal Mile` and your route takes you along Castle Hill, Lawnmarket, High Street and Canongate - passing delightful multi-storied houses and quaint side streets. You will also drive past St. Giles Cathedral, considered the finest of the city's churches. This impressive cathedral dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, and is known for its famous crown spire. Continuing, you'll then pass Palace of Holyrood House, Scotland's premier Royal Palace. Dating from the late 15th century, it is the official Scottish residence of the Queen.

Before heading back to Leith, it's a drive along famous Princes Street, with its array of fine stores on one side, and beautifully laid out formal gardens on the other, affording outstanding views across to the ever present castle, standing majestically on its extinct volcanic rock.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1 hour of walking at Edinburgh Castle, at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces, as well as a significant number of steps to negotiate. This tour is not suitable for wheelchair guests and those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Oceania Exclusive Tour

For those travelers who prefer an added measure of intimacy and flexibility, we are pleased to offer our new Oceania Exclusive tours. With a minimum of 10 guests and a maximum capacity of just 16 guests, each tour benefits from a higher level of personal attention and the added flexibility and agility that come from traveling in a small group.

Oceania Exclusive tours are available for a specially selected number of tours in almost every port we visit, in every corner of the world.

Scotland is a land of castles, mighty fortresses on rocky heights, isolated keeps, elegant homes for great families and grim strongholds set on towering sea cliffs. In the great halls, great men discussed affairs of state against backdrops of regal splendour. Noble men and tyrants, kings and queens, lords and commoners all made their entrances and exits, and now only the stones remain to speak of centuries of drama.

The eight year campaign fought by Robert the Bruce not only to drive the English from Scotland but also to have himself recognized as king inside his own country of Scotland, reached its climax with a battle at Bannockburn in June 1314. For a leader who understood the virtues of guerrilla warfare and recognized the danger of confronting the English in pitched battle, the prospect of fighting the enormous force brought to Scotland by Edward II must have been a dreadful one. The hard fought battle however turned to a rout. Edward II fled, and the spoils of Bannockburn enabled Bruce to ransom members of his family being held hostage in England.

It's an hour's drive through the scenic heart of Scotland, to the Bannockburn Heritage Center, your first stop. Here, you'll enjoy a visit to the exhibition `Kingdom of the Scots`, which depicts Scottish history from Robert the Bruce, to the Union of the Crowns of Scotland and England in 1603. There is an audio-visual presentation of the Battle of Bannockburn, a striking equestrian statue of Bruce, and a display of Scottish life and historical characters. Adding to the colorful atmosphere is a brilliant display of heraldic banners.

From here, your tour continues on to Stirling, situated on one of the many loops of the River Forth. Rising abruptly from the flat plains; this fortress-crowned rock with a grey town clinging to its steep sides, is a vivid, yet blood-stained page from Scotland's history book. Because of its strategic position, guarding the route north, this was a fortress town from the earliest times; bitterly fought over, bravely defended. The castle has appropriately been called the key to Scotland. As a result, its possession has been the focus of contention for many centuries, with battles like Bannockburn being fought in its shadow. As your coach travels through the old town on your way to the castle, it will seem as if every inch is drenched in history and interest. There are views of hills all around and the promise of Highland scenery beyond. The present castle dates mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries when it was a principal royal residence. James III was born here in 1451, James V spent his childhood here, and the infant Mary Queen of Scots was crowned here on September 9, 1543. Work done on the castle during the 16th century largely shaped the structure as it survives today.

Your self-guided tour will show you the main features of the central turreted gatehouse with its flanking towers and curtain wall, the Great Hall, the Palace, one of the earliest Renaissance buildings in Scotland, and the Chapel Royal. Afterward, enjoy the splendid panoramic views afforded from the battlements before it's time to return to the ship.

NWH-009 LEISURELY EDINBURGH

Tour Price: $109.00

July 23, 2017 08:45 AMDate:

This relaxing narrated drive through Edinburgh captures the capital's essence through its signature landmarks, including imposing Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Park and New Town.

Depart from the pier and drive towards the spectacular Gothic cityscape of Edinburgh, somewhat following the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, a gaping inlet from the North Sea. Upon arriving in the proud capital city, you can't help but notice brooding Edinburgh Castle sitting atop an outcrop of sheer granite cliffs. It anchors one end of the famed Royal Mile, an area approximately one mile long that extends down to Holyrood Palace, the official Scottish residence of Queen Elizabeth II.

As you crisscross the streets in this phenomenally scenic Old Town, you will get a sense of what life here was like centuries ago. The streets are busy, narrow and lined with towering buildings Edinburgh-born Robert Louis Stevenson once described as "a dream in masonry." You will also travel along the major thoroughfare of Princes Street in New Town, a stunningly picturesque section of Edinburgh whose construction began in the late 18th century. It's known for neo-classical architecture and large, open green spaces.

As you will discover driving through Holyrood Park, it is truly one of the city's most beautiful green oases with serene ponds favored by waterfowl. You'll stop for photos and to take in the views at the highest point in the park, Arthur's Seat, an extinct volcano that overlooks the Edinburgh and far beyond. Afterwards, you will return to the pier.

Please note: This tour is panoramic in nature with optional limited walking at the photo stop. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Weather appropriate, water-proof clothing; and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended.

NWH-004 ST. ANDREW'S - HOME OF GOLF

Tour Price: $129.00

July 23, 2017 12:00 PMDate:

Golf enthusiasts won't want to miss this tour that visits the famous golf club at St. Andrews.

Between The Firth of Forth and The Firth of Tay the North Sea border county of Fife contains a land of gentle hills, cut by the River Eden flowing eastwards to St. Andrews. Named after Scotland's patron saint, St. Andrews is the home of the world's oldest golf club, the Royal and Ancient, founded in 1754. The Club is the headquarters of world golf and the supreme authority in golfing matters.

Even from a distance, St. Andrews delights the visitor. It is a town for all seasons and all tastes. Set on the east coast, surrounded by countryside, St. Andrews is part of a kingdom in its own right, central to Scottish history in learning and devotion. Scholars walk through the quiet alleys and lanes, where men at arms once raced in the fury of the Reformation. There have been other dramas as well - crowds from all over the world have gathered round the 18th hole of the famous Old Course, knowing just how much depended on a single putt.

Departing by coach from Leith, it's a picturesque 1-hour drive along the main route that runs northwards from the Forth road bridge. You route then branches off onto country roads with fine pastoral views as you head ever closer to St. Andrews.

On arrival into St. Andrews, you'll make a brief photo stop at the atmospheric ruins of St. Andrews Cathedral, which are among the most photographed in Scotland. The great east window and surviving foundations give an impression of the size and splendor of the edifice. The cathedral was founded in 1160 by Arnold, Abbot of Kelso, but the turbulence of medieval Scotland delayed its completion until 1318. It grew to become the longest and greatest church in the land, unequalled anywhere else.

Your tour continues with a panoramic drive through St. Andrews, viewing the bustling market town, and then it's onward to enjoy an overview of the layout of the golf courses. An exterior view of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews is included. This venerable golf club has been of central importance in the evolution of the game, both in St. Andrews and world-wide.

You'll have time for a guided short stroll around areas of the Old Course, or to browse in one of the many small specialist shops selling golfing memorabilia and items of golf clothing, before commencing the return drive to Leith via Cupar and the central areas of Fife.

Please note: This tour can include up to 1 1/2 hours of walking, mainly at the guest's discretion. The tour is considered suitable for wheelchair guests who can make their way on and off the coach. Guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. This excursion reveals the tumultuous history of Scotland, one of its grandest castles and a wooded wonderland that rivals the Highlands for natural beauty.

Depart from the pier and drive west following the Firth of Forth, as it narrows and becomes the winding River Forth. Just outside the city of Stirling, you will see the National Wallace Monument, a memorial built in 1869 in honor of William Wallace, the Scottish hero known as Braveheart. It sits atop Abbey Craig, a prominent hilltop where in 1297 Wallace led the Scots to victory against the encroaching English army.

Upon reaching Stirling, you will behold grand Stirling Castle, a great symbol of Scottish independence and pride, and where Mary Queen of Scots spent her childhood. Hugely strategic, the fortress was hotly fought over and changed hands frequently. It overlooks the site of Wallace's victory and revered Bannockburn, where Robert the Bruce defeated the English in 1314.

Continuing on, Scotland's glorious natural beauty takes center stage as you drive into the Trossachs, a land of wild glens and sparkling lochs often regarded as the "Highlands in miniature." Once home to the folk hero Rob Roy, Scotland's version of Robin Hood, the Trossachs are majestic, especially the views from Dukes Pass, a gap in the dense Achray Forest. Free time in Aberfoyle follows, affording you a taste of village life.

Afterwards, you will return to the pier passing by the Lake of Menteith, considered the only true lake in Scotland, as the others are lochs.

Please note: This tour is primarily panoramic in nature with mostly optional limited walking at the stops. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Weather appropriate, water-proof clothing; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended.

KOI-006 SOUTH ISLAND PANORAMIC

Tour Price: $99.00

July 24, 2017 09:15 AM, 12:15 PMDate:

Experience the beauty of the South Island, enjoying stops at a historical chapel and charming village where you can do some shopping.

From the ship in Kirkwall, you'll head out along the coast near the Scapa Flow naval base. You will hear dramatic stories of World War I and II that make this one of the best-known stretches of water in the world. The series of causeways, called the Churchill Barriers, which link the southern isles, were originally built from cement blocks to protect the eastern approaches of Scapa Flow following the sinking of HMS Royal Oak in 1939. Now surfaced with a roadway, they provide vehicle access to the islands, which were previously connected only by ferry.

On Lamb Holm you'll visit the beautifully hand-painted Italian Chapel. Known as the miracle of Camp 60, this remarkable structure was built by Italian prisoners during World War II. The chapel has been preserved and maintained for its historical connection with the soldiers from Italy.

From here, continue south to the island of South Ronaldsay and on to the pretty village of St. Margaret's Hope. Local legend has it that the village is named after Margaret, Maid of Norway, who died near here on her way to marry King Edward II of England. However, she was never a saint. The coach will stop here and you can do a little shopping at the excellent Craft Workshop or wander through the historic streets. Afterwards, you will drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour is primarily panoramic in nature with limited optional walking at the stops. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing (be prepared for the chance of rain); sunglasses; and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended.

KOI-007 SOUTH PANORAMA & HIGHLAND PARK DISTILLERY

Tour Price: $119.00

July 24, 2017 09:30 AMDate:

A highly scenic panoramic drive that showcases several Orkney landmarks, and a visit to a Scotch whiskey distillery await you on this tour.

Head south from Kirkwall along the road overlooking historic Scapa Flow, a great inlet surrounded by protective islands, and cross the Churchill Barriers, constructed using Italian prisoner of war labor. You'll see the Italian Chapel created out of Nissen huts by the prisoners in their spare time. It is a miracle of faith with delicate wrought-iron tracery and frescoes whose artist, Dominico Chiocchetti, returned in later years to restore the original work.

At Highland Park Distillery, you'll learn about the unique character of Highland Park 12-year-old single malt whisky and its relationship to the local peat beds. A video introduces you to the northernmost Scotch whisky distillery in the world. Then on a guided tour of the distillery, you'll see the floor maltings, peat kiln and the viewing warehouse before returning to the Visitor Center for a "wee dram" of Highland Park.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 90 minutes of easy walking/standing. There will be a few steps to negotiate. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach, and have an able-bodied companion. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Warm, weather appropriate clothing (be prepared for the chance of rain); cap; sunglasses; and flat sturdy walking shoes re recommended. Guests must be at least 18 years old to participate in the tasting. Those who are arriving at Kirkwall between mid-June and mid-August (exact dates to be confirmed) are advised that your call coincides with the "silent season" at the Highland Park Distillery. The silent season occurs once a year and lasts three weeks. This is the period when whisky production ceases and most employees take a vacation, and routine maintenance is carried out. Tours are still offered during this time, and you will learn all about the whisky-making process, but the tour is slightly different from when the distillery is in full-production mode.

BER-007 LYSOEN ISLAND & OLE BULL'S EXOTIC FAIRYTALE HOME

Tour Price: $269.00

July 26, 2017 08:30 AMDate:

Discover how Norway first achieved international recognition during this journey to Norway's island paradise of Lysoen.

Depart the pier for a drive through the City of Bergen, then across the beautiful forests and scenic fjords of the Fana Mountain region. About 18 miles south of Bergen is Lysoen, the island paradise once belonging to legendary settler and violinist Ole Bull. Born in Bergen in 1810, Ole Bull was a renowned violinist who played concert tours throughout the Western World, brought international recognition to Norway and inspired other noted composers of his day, including Edvard Grieg.

Upon reaching Buene Pier, you'll embark on the 35-passenger boat, aptly named Ole Bull, for the 5-minute ride to the Island of Lysoen. Upon arrival, you'll take a short walk from the pier to Little Alhambra, the spectacular former home-turned-museum of Ole Bull that was built between 1872-1873 for use as a summer home. Crafted from Norwegian pine, Little Alhambra features an onion dome and elegant trellis work. Ole Bull transformed the surrounding 175-acre island property into a fairytale kingdom by incorporating romantic paths, ponds and gazebos into the landscape, and planting exotic trees and bushes in the native pine forest.

Inside Little Alhambra, you'll view a presentation of Ole Bull and his life as a leading proponent of Norwegian Romanticism and the national movement of independence. A century later, the estate was donated to the Norwegian Society for the Preservations of Historical Monuments by Ole Bull's granddaughter. After a period of extensive renovation, Little Alhambra reopened to public in 1984, and has served as a museum ever since. Following the presentation, some time will afforded for you to tour the other rooms on the ground floor and take a stroll in the garden.

When your visit to Little Alhambra is concluded, you will retrace your route back to Bergen making a brief stop at the ruins of the Lysekloster (Light monastery), founded by monks from Fountain Abbey in Yorkshire in the 12th century on your way back to the ship.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1-hour of moderate walking. To reach the home from the pier is a 200 yard walk up an inclined sandy path. There are also some steps and steep stairs to negotiate at Little Alhambra. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not recommended for those with mobility concerns. Smoking is strictly forbidden on the entire Island of Lysoen. Flat, comfortable walking shoes, umbrella and layered clothing are suggested.

After being destroyed by fire in 1992, the church was restored to its original glory. The new church is constructed exactly like the one which was built in the Middle Ages, using timber from the Sognefjord area and forests north of Bergen. In the middle Ages there were at least 800 of these very typical churches in Norway, today only 28 remain.

Following your visit, you will embark your coach for the drive back to Bergen. You have the option of continuing on back to the ship, or remaining in town to browse the market and historic shops found along the Hanseatic Pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of moderate walking/standing, at times over uneven surfaces. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. GAN-006 DISCOVER GEIRANGER AND HIKE MT. FLO

Tour Price: $319.00

July 28, 2017 10:15 AMDate:

Experience an unforgettable scenic journey through farmlands, valleys, mountains and lakes during this overland tour and hike.

Norwegians measure mountain hikes in hours and not in kilometres. Trails climbing up and down, winding in and around, in order to avoid natural obstacles of rock and rivers, make linear measurements altogether irrelevant. Your day begins in Geiranger with a scenic coach ride that ascends to Mount Dalsnibba, with a brief photostop at the Flydal gorge en route. From the Dalsnibba wiewpoint - if the weather is clear - you have splendid views to the fjord deep down below and the mountain-world that surrounds you. Continuing on, you will travel via the new Stryne mountain road which goes through several tunnels, making it possible to keep the road open in the wintertime as well. Before descending to Flo, a delightful small community with many orchards, you will stop for lunch at a local hotel.

Arriving in Flo, you will leave your coach behind and travel by foot as you begin your hike of Mt. Flo. As you climb - take time to stop and look at Strynsvatnet lake below. The first sighting is truly spectacular. Surrounded by mighty mountains like Skåla and Lofjellet, the view is magnificent. Several smaller glaciers can also be seen from this marvelous vantage point. Your hiking path also passes three 'seters' (Summer farms) and although the seter huts are still standing, the summer farming as done in the old way has mostly become history. Making your way past several mountain lakes, you will finally reach the highest point on the path, just over 1800 feet above sea level. As you walk along, try to imagine that centuries ago this was the 'highway' where literally, caravans of cattle and horses were herded along.

Your hiking adventure will end at Vollster Farm where you will rejoin your coach and travel the last leg of your journey to Hellesylt, where your ship is awaiting.

Please note: This challenging hiking tour will cover approximately 4 miles and involves extensive walking over difficult and uneven surfaces and thus, is only recommended for guests in very good physical condition. This tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair, or those with mobility issues, back and/or neck problems, asthma, heart or respiratory conditions. It is recommended that guests dress in layers, bring a wind and water-proof jacket and wear sturdy, comfortable hiking boots. It is also suggested that participants bring along a bottle of water from the ship. Lunch venues/locations are subject to change.

GAN-005 BEST OF GEIRANGER FJORD

Tour Price: $319.00

July 28, 2017 10:40 AMDate:

This full-day tour allows you to discover the wonderful natural attraction of Geirangerfjord and the incredible scenery to be found in this area of Norway. The Geirangerfjord is no doubt one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway. Towering, steep mountainsides and numerous waterfalls all combine to create the unique scenery that would be hard to find anywhere else in the world.

At the head of this 9-mile long fjord lays the little village of Geiranger where your excursion commences. You will begin by heading up the many hairpin bends to the viewpoint named Eagle's Bend. From this wonderful vantage point there is a fantastic view of the mountain world that surrounds you as well as the fjord deep down below. Thereafter, your coach descends to fjord level once more and returns to Geiranger before starting uphill again, passing two of the town's modern, comfortable hotels as well as the little wooden octagonal church.

Your next stop will be at Flydal gorge. The view down towards the fjord is simply superb and the cruise ships look like toy boats from this height. Continuing on, you'll make your way towards Djupvass chalet situated at some 3100 feet above sea level and then make a detour up to the summit of Mount Dalsnibba, from where there is an unbelievable view on clear days. Retracing your path to Djupvass, your drive continues further along Djupvatn Lake, which is usually covered by ice and snow until end of June. Linking up with the new Stryne-Road, kept open year-round, you will follow that to Grotli where a stop is made for lunch.

After a relaxing lunch and a chance to stretch your legs, your tour resumes in a westerly direction to the Tystigen summer ski-center for your next stop. With a bit of luck and snow conditions permitting, you may be able to see skiers as they come zooming down the mountainside. Continue down the hairpin bends of the Stryn-Road to Stryn Lake, known for its wonderful turquoise color. Another photo stop is made before making your way into Stryn, the administrative center of the inner part of the Nordfjord, driving along the Stryn Salmon River the last part of the way. Following the shores of the Nordfjord, you will next cross a wooded hill down to Hornindal Lake, the deepest freshwater lake in Europe which is known for its abundance of fish.

The last leg of your journey navigates uphill, crossing the border between the County Sogn & Fjordane and Møre & Romsdal county. Enjoy the scenery of a mountain valley with many attractive chalets as you make your way down to the village of Hellesylt, situated at the head of the Synnulvsfjord. It was here that the author Henrik Ibsen was inspired to write one of his best-known plays. As your tour comes to an end, you'll pass a lovely waterfall and the local dairy, where they produce the Norwegian type of goat cheese. Arriving at the pier, you will find your ship has also made the journey to Hellesylt and lies at anchor awaiting your return.

Please note: This tour is considered panoramic and encompasses approximately 5 hours of travel on a coach. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, can make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Boarding your coach, you will leave the village behind and begin your climb up the exciting Eagle's Road with its 11 hairpin bends. During the winter months, this is the only means of communication with the outside world. Storfjord is the main fjord which the Geirangerfjord is part of. From Ytterdal you will make your way to one of the many summer mountain farms in the area - the Herdalsetra.

ALE-006 THE SAGA ISLANDS OF GISKE & GODOY

Tour Price: $199.00

July 29, 2017 08:30 AM, 12:15 PMDate:

Visit two islands of the vast community of Giske, Giske Island and the more westerly, Godoy Island.

Your tour starts with a short city panoramic experience by coach driving through the Art Nouveau quarters of Ålesund. The city's architectural character is in fact the result of a catastrophe - the great fire in 1904 and those young architects who participated in the rebuilding of the city were inspired by the Art Nouveau style.

Then, drive up to Mount Aksla from where you have a beautiful view of the city, the islands and the Sunnmøre Mountains. Leaving the city you will drive through some of the world's largest sub-sea tunnels connecting the islands with the mainland. Today, the approximately 6,300 inhabitants have a ferry-free connection'with the rest of Norway. To reach the islands you must traverse bridges and undersea-tunnels, the longest being 2 1/2 miles.

Giske, a fairly flat and fertile island, is known as the Saga Island and for the fact that the Viking King Gangerolv or Rollo was born here. He conquered Norway in 911 and later settled on the northern coast of France, a landscape today known under the name Normandie. Later, he became the ancestor of William the Conqueror, sire to the English Royal Family. With its powerful families, Viking Kings and heirs, the island was a seat of power during the Viking Age. A stop will be made to view the exterior of the Giske Chapel - a Roman marble church dating from 1135. The church was built as a private church for the famous Viking Giske family. The interior of the church was restored in 1756 and has a beautifully carved and painted alter-piece and a pulpit.

From Giske, continue over to Godoy Island where you will drive towards the small fishing village of Alnes, situated facing the Atlantic Ocean. Here, the tour will continue on foot to enjoy a stroll around the village. Following your time in Godoy, you will re-board your coach and return to Alesund.

Please note: This tour involves moderate walking over mostly even surfaces and some gravel paths. It is not recommended for wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns should evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. An interior visit of the Giske Chapel may not be possible if church services are taking place. Guests are encouraged to wear closed toe, sturdy shoes and casual, weather appropriate clothing.

Tour Price: $189.00

July 29, 2017 09:00 AMDate:

Ålesund is known as the Art Nouveau town by the sea, and recently voted the most beautiful town in Norway. It has a beautiful setting across several islands stretching out into the sea, and it is situated at the very entrance to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Geirangerfjord.

Internationally renowned for its unique architecture, the town was devastated by a fire in 1904, laying 850 houses in ashes and leaving 10,000 people homeless. During a remarkably short period of time, the new Ålesund was rebuilt in the unique architectural style, especially significant from 1890-1910, with a myriad of turrets, spires and medieval ornaments.

Your tour begins with a drive along the Borgundfjord, through the modern suburbs to the old trading center of Borgund. Here, in a delightful setting you'll find the Sunnmore Open-air Museum. This wonderful museum is comprised of various types of farmhouses and boathouses which have been moved to this site from all over the region. The Museum also houses a number of different old boats. The shipbuilding traditions of the area hold their traditions from long ago, and boats built here were believed to be the most reliable to be found along the coast. On display here are also replicas of the so-called Kvalsund boat from the year 700 AD and the even older Fjørtoft boats. Alongside is also the fishing vessel HELAND - better known as the Shetland-Bus as it was used to carry Norwegian partisans across the North Sea during World War II.

Your return to Alesund includes a stop at the Mount Aksla viewpoint, Fjellstua. Truly spectacular scenery that includes breathtaking panoramas of the mountains and sea can be appreciated from this advantageous location. After a stop for photos, you'll continue your journey back to the pier in Alesund, passing through central areas of the city along your route.

Please note: This tour includes a moderate amount of walking at the Sunnmore Museum - some of it over uneven surfaces. There are some steps to negotiate at the various displays and the main building is not wheelchair accessible; therefore, the tour may not be suitable for wheelchair guests. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Casual, weather appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes are suggested. The order of sites visited may vary.

ALE-004 WALKING TOUR OF ALESUND

Tour Price: $109.00

July 29, 2017 09:30 AM, 01:30 PMDate:

Alesund, the largest town on the North-West coast of Norway has a spectacular setting, built on three islands close to the ocean and with a backdrop of impressive mountain-peaks. The town center was destroyed by fire in 1904, but rebuilt shortly after in the characteristic architecture of the period - Jugend-style. In fact, it was the German emperor Wilhelm II, a great friend of Norway, who sent masons up to help rebuild the town.

Today, Alesund has a population of 40,000 residents; however, the town center is relatively small and easy to cover on foot. Your guided walking tour of the town which begins pier-side will emphasize the importance of the fisheries in Norway's biggest fish-export harbor and you will be shown various examples of the picturesque Art Noveau-style which has made Alesund famous as one of the three last Art Nouveau-cities in Europe.

During your walk, you will also travel uphill to a small park at the foot of Mount Aksla to enjoy the vantage point. Here, you will find exotic trees and plants as well as a memorial stone dedicated to the emperor Wilhelm II, who also has had the main street in town named after him. Also found here is the statue of the Viking Gange-Rolf who sailed from Alesund to what is today Normandie, France, which is named after the Norwegian settlers.

Those who feel fit can walk up a few bends towards Mount Aksla and will then be able to enjoy a spectacular view, take time to stroll around in the park or rest before you return to the ship.

Please note: Those taking part in this tour should be in good physical condition. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those guests with mobility concerns. Guests are encouraged to wear a windbreaker as well as comfortable, sturdy walking shoes. The tour does at times travel over uneven surfaces and includes gentle inclines and declines.

Explore Norway's past and present during this picturesque sightseeing tour that highlights historic Stavanger, a charming harbor city founded in 1125 A.D. As you continue on, you will pass Hafrsfjord, the site of a historic sea battle fought 1,100 years ago during the Viking Age and then on along the coast of South West Norway, viewing part of the long sandy coastal stretches of Jaeren where the light, the sea and sky are a magnificent sight to behold. Your route brings you past agricultural land as you reach the old residential section of Stavanger. Back in the center of the city, you will drive by the little lake where the Cathedral is situated; the only one that has kept its original features. SVG-006 STAVANGER CATHEDRAL & IRON AGE FARM

Tour Price: $79.00

July 30, 2017 10:30 AMDate:

Stavanger has for centuries played a leading role in Norway's maritime history, from the time when the Viking kings battled in Hafrsfjord, through the period of the "white sails" and the steamships up to modern super-tankers. Stavanger is also the most important "oil city" in Norway.

Commencing from the pier, you will travel through rich agricultural countryside before arriving at Ullandhaug with its reconstructed farmhouses from the Iron Age. After an interesting and thorough introduction to life in those far away days, you will re-board your coach and continue on to the viewpoint nearby. From Ullandhaug hill you are afforded a wonderful view over Hafrsfjord, where the Viking king Harald Haarfagre (the Fair-haired) in 872 defeated the last of the regional princes and united the 29 small kingdoms, creating the Kingdom of Norway.

Traveling back to Stavanger, you will next stop at Stavanger Cathedral for a visit. One of few churches in Norway that has retained its original design, the Stavanger Cathedral was named St. Svithun Cathedral after St. Swithun, or Swithun. In addition to serving as the English Bishop of Winchester from 852-862 A.D., St. Swithun was the Patron Saint of the Winchester Cathedral from the 10th-16th century.

Following your tour of the Cathedral, you will re-board your coach for the return drive to Stavanger. Along the way, a stop will be made in the old residential area of the city to see Northern Europe's best-preserved wooden house settlement, which is filled with charming, late-17th and early 18th-century wooden houses. At this point, you may opt to continue on for the remainder of the return drive, or disembark the coach and join your guide for a brief walking tour past the white houses en route to the ship.

Please note: This tour includes a moderate amount of walking; some of it over uneven natural surfaces and there are some steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Flat, comfortable walking shoes and a sweater or jacket are suggested. The transportation is not air-conditioned.
