Jens Galschiot (1997) Pillar of Shame

Monuments

The first Pillar of Shame was set up in Hong Kong on 4th June 1997. It commemorates those who were killed in the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. Since then, Pillars of Shame have been erected in Mexico and Brazil, each representing social injustice.

Robert Smithson (1970) Spiral Jetty

Located on the Great Salt Lake in Utah, the Spiral Jetty is 4.5m wide and 457m long and comprises of black basalt rocks and earth gathered from the site.

HOW DO OBJECTS RELATE TO SPACE?

Christo and Jean-Claude (1971-1995) Wrapped Reichstag

Attempts to create this work began in the early 1970s. It was finally brought to fruitions in 1995 and took 90 professional climbers and 120 installation workers to create. The Reichstag building in Berlin was wrapped up in silver coloured recycled fabric for a total of 14 days.

The legacy of the King of KowloonHaving discovered his ancestors had claims to substantial land in Kowloon prior to British rule, Tsang Tsou Choi (aka the King of Kowloon) set about denouncing the British and retelling his family history in across Kowloon’s public spaces in a calligraphic style of graffiti.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!

• Get into groups of 3 or 4:

• Discuss the statement you would like to make with yarn (political, aesthetic, funny…)

• Discuss where in Hong Kong you might like to make this visual statement,

• Decide on a shortlist of 1 or 2 locations,

• Visit those locations now as a group and…

Consider the following (while taking lots of notes and photos):

• Is the location accessible (not too high up, somewhere dangerous or somewhere it could cause an obstruction)?

• What might the yarn be attached too in particular?

• How many people will be needed to install the yarn at this location?

• Why this location in particular?

PREPARATION FOR FOURTH WEEK

1. Turn a pair of chopsticks into a pair of knitting needles. Here are some instructions:

• Bring your location notes from this week. Each group will present a case for the location they like best and we will vote on a final choice.

• Bring your sense of adventure. Who is brave enough to install our group artwork in a public place???
