FussyBabySessions:FunforMomsandBabies! On Wednesday, November 10, Oakwood Shores moms brought in their

babies and toddlers for their rst Fussy Baby session.

Led by the Erikson Institute, staff showed parents different soothing

methods from massage, to singing, to play. This new initiative, called Fussy

Baby, meets every second Wednesday of the month from 10-11:30am.

Parents with children up to 18 months old are invited to join for an

opportunity to talk with child development specialists about how their babis learning and growing.

Fussy Baby provides parents an opportunity to share parenting

techniques and consult with specialists while their children play with other

babies and toddlers. Moms learned how to massage their babies to soothe

their crying and received massage oil and a book on soothing techniques.

See more photos from the rst Fussy Baby session on page 5 of this

newsletter. For more information or to sign up, interested parents should

Healthy Tips from Around theWorld: BrazilMake Friends with Rice and Beans

Americans tend to think of starchy foods as

the enemy, but according to a study publishedin the journal Obesity Research, a diet focused

on rice and beans (in contrast with a typical

Western diet), such as the kind Brazilians

espouse, reduces peoples risk of becoming

    overweight by approximately 14 percent.

Low in fat and high in ber, its a winning

combination that stabilizes blood sugar and

    leaves people feeling satised. (www.care2.com)

HolidayShoppingTipsThe shopping season is here, and the Federal Trade Commission wants to help you get ready. Thesetips can help you shop smart and stay on budget. For more information about money managementand shopping wisely, visit www.ftc.gov/moneymatters.

Make a list and set a budget. List the peopleyou plan to buy gifts for, the type of gifts youplan to buy, and how much you plan to spend.

Shop around. A sale price isnt always thebest price. Some merchants may offer a saleprice on the item you want for a limited time;other merchants may offer items at a discount

    everyday.

Look for price-matching policies. Somemerchants will match, or even beat, acompetitors prices.

Go online. Check out websites that compareprices. If you decide to buy from an onlinemerchant, keep shipping costs and deliverytime in mind.

Carefully consider bargain offers that arebased on purchases of additional merchandise. For example, Buy One, Get One Free orFree Gift with Purchase. If you dont really

want or need the item, its not a deal.

Clip coupons. Coupons are useful whenthey save you money on what youre alreadyplanning to buy. Check coupons for anyrestrictions.

Ask about sale adjustments. If you buy anitem at regular price and it goes on sale thenext week, can you get a credit or refund forthe discounted amount?

Consider layaway. When you use layaway, youtypically make a deposit usually a percentageof the purchase price and pay over time untilyou have paid for the item in full.

Keep an eye on your wallet. Dont ash cash.Keep an eye on your credit or debit card duringtransactions. If your cards are lost or stolen,

report the loss or theft immediately to the cardissuers.

Use credit and debit cards with care. Saveyour receipts. You need them for returns andexchanges. Check credit and debit card salesand return receipts against your monthly billsand statements, and report any problems to thecredit card issuer promptly.

Ask about refund and return policies. Manymerchants may have different refund and returnpolicies for sale items. For example, clearancemerchandise may be on nal sale, meaning norefunds or exchanges.

Keep good records. Its important to keepdetailed information about transactions, including your order number, shipping costs anddates, warranties, and refund and return policies.

Ship early. If youre sending gifts to out-of-towners, factor in extra time for shipping. If you

wait until the last minute, you may pay a heftyprice for express or overnight shipping.

Raining all the timein the corners of my mind.

So much is expected of me.

    All the work and responsibility,

the pressure is wearing down on me,

    and my patience running thin.

    Due dates, deadlines and projects

    those are the key words.

    Maybe its me being lazy,

    who knows?

    Fear engulng me,

    getting into high school,

    getting there safely.

    Maybe Im a shell

    of my former self,

    becoming self-conscious

    about the things I do,

    the clothes I wear.

I wish I can be the civil rights activist

    I hope to be,

but thourgh school work and gradeswho can really see me?

I can never truly be happy,

    thats sad.

    All of the destruction

    and chaos in the world,

    wearing down on my childhood.

    I wish I could do

    the things I want to,

    to be a kid,

    live carefree.

    I grew up too fast.

    I suppose.

opportunity to access technology. Donate your time (24 hours) and in turn

you can build a computer to take home and keep.

My trip there was an very interesting trip, and also very informative.

I recieved community service hours and learned the main parts of the

computer. I was also informed of how technology is most commonly

    disposed.

Most technology is taken to third-world countries and dumped into rivers

and landlls. This is very disturbing information! Why are we lied to? We need

to step up and be careful about how we dispose of things.
