On Thursday, June 6, volunteers gathered at All Souls Church for the 2012–2013 Annual Meeting, presided over by NYJL President Fiona Grant Small. Volunteers received an update on the highlights and progress of the 2012-2015 strategic
planning goals, including the announcement that the NYJL Annual Fund had raised an unprecedented $121,611. Volunteers were also introduced to the NYJL new core values (see back page), as well as the “I Volunteer” campaign that will allow volunteers to share their reasons for joining the NYJL.
During the awards ceremony, the Caffrey-Conroy Learning Center was honored as the recipient of the NYJL’s Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Fund. Executive Director Betsy Hendry accepted the $15,000 grant on behalf of the Breezy Point-based organization. The Community Improvement Project (CIP) was awarded Committee of the Year for its work with community partner Urban Dove. The following nine women were honored for their extraordinary contributions to the NYJL: Sustainers to Watch Katherine Tsougranis and Zoe Stolbun and Women to Watch Mary Catherine Burdine, Melanie Cecka, Kim Galloway, Rachel Geringer-Dunn, Courtney Guzman, Kimberly Pike, and Maryn Tillman.
NYJL Gives Fort Tryon Park Back to Community
O n Saturday, June 1, the NYJL celebrated the 22nd anniversary of the
Playground Improvement Project (PIP), with a medieval-themed ribbon cutting ceremony that returned a revitalized For t Tryon Park to the Washington Heights community. Since 1992, this NYJL signature project committee, in conjunction with the New York City Depar tment of Parks and Recreation, has been selecting a different park each spring to refurbish. In addition to various small projects including gardening and painting park benches, the more than 1,000 volunteers who par ticipated in this year’s project worked on a wide-scale lawn restoration and construction project.

Dear NYJL Volunteers,
Welcome back! As I write, the “dog days” of August have arrived, which means summer will soon be drawing to a close. The fall season is shaping up to be very busy at Headquarters, and personally I am very excited about all of the opportunities that await us.
Last year was one of both transformation and accomplishment at the NYJL. Working with Urban Dove, we completed our first Community Improvement Project (and we are already well underway with the process of selecting this year’s partner). We hosted a number of successful events and fundraisers
that brought Actives, Provisionals, Sustainers and friends of the NYJL alike together, all with the common goal of helping us further the NYJL’s mission—and of course we’ll be doing the same this year! We raised more than $120,000 for our Annual Fund (and let me once again give a big “thank you” to all the donors), which will help us to lay the foundation to remain a strong supporter of both the community and our programming going forward. And, we came together to develop the skills and leadership of our volunteers through various programs and activities. Without your hard work and dedication, we wouldn’t be able to provide assistance to all of those in the community who rely on us. As always, thank you for giving your time and resources to the NYJL.
And, I believe the outlook for the year ahead promises to be equally dynamic and rewarding. One of the most important steps we will be taking will be the implementation of many of the strategies the Board developed last year in support of the five goals that comprise our current strategic plan. As we discussed at the Annual Meeting in June, one of the most visible initiatives we’ll be launching this fall is reinvigorating our brand identity and infusing our new core values (back page)—namely, that we are Passionate about Our Community; have Respect for Individuals; are Acting Responsibly; and are Promoting Opportunity—into all that we do. It is important that we keep these core values in mind, whether we’re working within the NYJL or volunteering with members of the community, because by doing so we improve both our interactions and our organization. And this is just one part of our new communications efforts, which we hope will help everyone effectively articulate who we are and what we do.
Ensuring our community programming is aligned to the needs of the community at large remains a key focus of the Board’s strategic planning. Last year, the Board’s Community Alignment Task Force helped us develop a roadmap that clearly sets out those community issues we want to address, where we see our capabilities and strengths being put to the greatest use in developing new community programming and, importantly, ensuring we are building our community programming around the interests of our volunteers. This year we will be putting our roadmap into action and start to reshape our community programs to achieve our vision and ensure we build sustainable community programming and partnerships for the future. We will also be continuing our efforts to diversify the NYJL’s revenue sources, and this year will be placing special emphasis on increasing funding from corporate sponsorship, foundation grants and planned giving. And a newly formed Board Task Force on Leadership and Training will be focused on helping us build a strong foundation for volunteer leadership succession by developing strategies to improve communications around the leadership recruitment process and, importantly, ensuring volunteers at all levels in the NYJL can access the right training and tools to help them succeed.
I am also excited to share with you details about many of the great events happening this fall. First and foremost, Homecoming will be taking place on Friday, October 4 (back cover). This year’s theme is Moonlight Masquerade – I hope everyone will be there, and not just hiding behind your masks! I hope you also will join me at the Fall House Tour in October to see some of the city’s most fabulous residences while raising critical funding for the NYJL (page 3). And, last but not least, I’d like to encourage all of you to consider whether there is an exceptional volunteer with whom you work that you’d like to nominate as an Outstanding Sustainer (page 4) or Outstanding Volunteer (page 6)!
As we start the second year of my term as President, I want you all to know how much it means to me to be a part of this organization. It is truly an honor to have the chance to work with your Board of Directors and your Management Council to achieve our goals and to address the challenges that we face. I look forward to working with you in the coming months to improve the lives of our fellow New Yorkers. Once again, thank you for all that you do to make the NYJL the extraordinary organization that it is today.

SustainersDear NYJL Volunteers,
At NYJL Headquarters and on the NYJL website, you will notice many responses to the “Why I Volunteer at the NYJL” campaign launched this past spring by NYJL President Fiona Grant Small. I hope that you will join me and share with the membership why you volunteer at the NYJL.
An important aspect of this challenge is to remind us of the core values and the mission of the NYJL, which are instrumental
to your successful volunteer efforts. The NYJL core values are to be passionate about our community; respect individuals; act responsibly; and promote opportunity.
I encourage all of you to participate in this campaign and share with your fellow volunteers your reasons for volunteering at the NYJL. Your words of wisdom and continued commitment will inspire many volunteers to stay focused and dedicated to the mission of the NYJL.
Why do I volunteer? I volunteer because I want to be a part of and work with an extraordinary and diverse group of women with whom I share the passion to serve and improve our community.
I hope to see you at the Sustainer Fall Cocktail Reception on Thursday, September 12. I look forward to hearing why you volunteer at the NYJL!

Sustainer Spring Cocktail Reception
Applause! Applause!Congratulations to Zoe Stolbun and Katherine Tsougranis for being selected
2013 Sustainers to Watch. Thank you for your tireless efforts on the Sustainer committee and Provisional Training committee, respectively.
At the Sustainer spring cocktail reception on June 5, attendees celebrated another successful year at the NYJL. The evening commemorated Sacha MacNaughton’s two-year leadership as Sustainer Chair and Council Head for Sustainers. Marion Bott’s daughter surprised the crowd by singing to Ron Gold’s tunes on the piano. It was a perfect way to end the evening’s festivities—and the season. Photo by Laura Hilton.

Introducing Our Core Values
Among the many things that make the NYJL the extraordinary organization it is today is our unique culture, and we want to share that culture with everyone who touches our organization. Last year, the Board of Directors took steps
to more clearly define the NYJL’s culture, resulting in the creation of four core values. Unveiled at the Annual Meeting in June, these values are reflected in everything we do and every interaction we have. Our core values form the framework under which we make our decisions and from which we draw inspiration. • Passionate about Our Community: We are passionate about our community and believe in maximizing our impact
through strategic external partnerships, advocacy and volunteer action to achieve our mission.• Respect for Individuals: We respect each other, those with whom we work and those we serve in the community. We
strive to understand others, to respect differences and to treat everyone with dignity.• Acting Responsibly: We recognize that our decisions and our actions can affect others and we strive to uphold our
commitments and act honorably and responsibly in all that we do.• Promoting Opportunity: We are committed to helping each other achieve our potential. We foster a supportive and
motivating environment that enables continuous learning, encourages mentoring and develops future leaders. As we embrace and embody these core values, we hope they will help us to shape our future and serve as the foundation for all we do.
