    Offerprayer for the churches

to be concerned for African preachers to carry the Word.

    May 1974

    Central Africa Story

    A myriad of

    mission

    philosophies appear

    from

    the classroom to national plat

forms, and from fields of service to board meetings. This is good, for we must care

fully consider the mosteffectivewaysofreachingpeople for Christ in on ever chang

    ing world.

    An

examination of different philosophies not only gives new ideas and freshness,

    but many

    times points

our dangers ofother philosophies. Redeeming the

    time

    is of

vital importance and any new idea, scripturally sound, is welcomed.

is gratifying to see a surge of interest in a world-wide evangelism; for a genu

ine concern for the lost has no geographical boundaries, and we must work while we

    still have today.

    Disciplining

    the nations has many aspects.

    Who,

where, and how to send are

only a few of the basic and vital questions. I am happy for the elders who chose to

set me aside as an evangelist to Rhodesia, for in their decision many questions of

sending are answered. But what about the actual work itself? Many books hod been

studied Anthropology, Sociology, Methodsof Approachand other courses hod been

    token, in

    order

to be more effective. The churches had committed us to the Spirit

    with trust and confidence. The

    field

    would determine much

    of

    how

    the

    work wou ld

    have to be carried out,

    and

    the Spirit would lead.

The opportunities in Rhodesiacalled forth a review and research of almost every

mission philosophy ever thought and yet, through the years, the main emphasis has

been through all approaches, to follow the plan laid down in the New Testament

    commit thou to faithful

    men

    who shall teach

    others also.

    In the Sinoio

    area

alone, there ore fifty-two church groups with whom we work.

The main thrust is hot only being involved in primary evangelism, but in teaching

    faithful

    men

    in special sessions.

    Recently we

are now in a strategic location not only to do a much needed work in Salisbury but

to assist in leadership clinics through the country.

The Lord continues to open new doors of service and we are so thankful for the

    CENTRAL

    AFRICA

    CHRISTIAN COLLEGE

    RICHARD

    SMITH

The preacher training work in Rhodesia had its beginning in 1958 at Mashoko

    when John

    Pemberton

    sow

    the

need fo r t ra ined Christian leaders in

    th e church

    of

Christ throughout Central Africa. Richard Smith became the principal of Central

Africa Christian College in 1966 when it was

    moved

    to Fort Victoria.

A goal of the college leaders is to encourage the Rhodesian African Christians

to begin to support their college.

    n

    the post years,

    much

    stress has been put upon

    this goal and now Christians

    are

    beginning to respond. They

    ore

    pleased to see that

they have a real part in making the college a success.

Until this goal is realized, we still must share the financial burden with American

Christians. We urge you to accept the invitation to shore in

    prayer

    for this work;

    that God con

    usethesetroined

    African men to

    spread

the Gospel to parts of the world

    and witness

    FORT VOORIA MISSION

    LESTER VAN DYKE FAMILY

    The

    Lester Van

    Dyke

    family

    began

    their

    work

    in

    Chiredzi,

    Hippo

    Valley,

    Rho

    desia in 1964 as

    they

    helped to pioneer

    the

    medical and evangelistic work there.

    After two years,

    they moved to

    Mashoko Mission

    where Von

    continued

    his

    hospital

    administration

    duties

    and

    did preaching

to the nearby villages and Marjorie

    taught

    in the

    Medical

    Assistant School and helpedwith

    office

    work.

    We

    soon sow the need

    for someone to take the

    Gospel

to the people in the villages, and so was born our

    plan for bush

    evangelism , which is the

    ministry,

    we

    feel

    we are called to

    do. We

    ore

    equipped

    with a

    VWKombi Camper which becomes

    our

    home for

    a

    number

    of

    days at a

    time

    in the villages where

    churches

    are

    being

    planted and nourished.

    We

maintain a home in Fort Victoria

    where

Van teaches in the African Bible College two

    days a

    week,

    but our major

    work

    lies

    in

    the vast Gutu

    Reserve

    some 40 miles

    from

    For t Victor ia

Van spends up to 5 days in one or

    two

villages at a time as he believes

    con

tact is the key to evangelizing a primitive people: eating the food they eat; sitting

    on the ground with

    them;

    walking their

    foot paths; visiting

    the sick and

    calling

    on

    church

    prospects;

having Bible studies for several hours a day, several days at a

time, under the shade of a tree, their usual meeting place-all these factors contri

    bute

    to the

    African s

acceptance ofthe Gospel. Not one of the villages to whom he

    ministers is

    in

    the

    vicinity

    of any

    mission

    station where the people

    con

    go to learn,

so they would not be reached if itweren t for going to them .

His main emphasis is l ea de rs hi p training and so he holds schools for the men and

b oy s who come each month for

    several

days. The women ore showing keen i nt er es t

in having a si mi lar school so p la ns are under consideration to assist them in l ea rn

    ing the Bible

    and

how to live the Christian life.

There is evidence of growth and one aspect of this is the recent selection by all

    the churches in the

    area

    of an

    elder

to serve as their leader during the Van Dyke s

furlough. There is i ncr ease d eagerness all the time to learn

    more

    of G od s Word.

    The leadership schools

    ore

continuing during the Van Dyke s absence led by three of

    the more capable men who

    will

teach others what they have alreody been taught.

The problems seem to remain the same: Drinking a habit of their culture with

    all the troubles that go

    with

    it; the consultation of Ngongas

    witchdoctors

    and the

    accompanying rituals they

    still

engage in contrary to Biblical teachings but so deep

    ly

    ingrained

    in their lives

since early childhood that they are very difficult to put be

hind them; jealousy among the various leaders and some refusal to work with others

in unity. We believe that only prayer can overcome these grievous problems.

    THE HIPPO

    VALLEY

    STORY

    O N PEMBERTON

In 1963 Dr. Dennis Pruettond Mr. Jo hn C. Pemberton come to the V al le y to talk

to the directors of the Hippo Valley Estates. They wanted them to come down into

this virgin territory where we hod no

    NewTestament

work at all and begin a medical

and an e duc at ion al work for t hei r employees After much discussion and t ra ve l be

tween Mashoko and Chiredzi the work

    here

    was opened

The work has g ro wn in n umbers and in spirit. Mr. Watson Mabono come down to

    the

    Lowveld in

    1966

    to workwith Mr Pember ton

    Mr

    Mabono was the first student

    of

    the

    Mashoko Bible

    College

    now

    the

    Central Africa Christian

    College

    in F ort Victoria.

Mr. Joshua Mafa soon followed he was the second student at Mashoko Bible College.

We now hove eight fully trained ministers

    here

in the Valley with a t ra in ed part-time

    chaplain. There isstill

    needfor

    more. Some of these ministers

    are

    covering as many

    as three preaching points

    where

they could be used full-time. Since this is a t ransit

type community many of the Christians soon

    move

    on to

    another

    job in

    another

    com

munity and the church is growing in other areas Just like the e ar ly church the peo

    ple

    move

and take their Christ with them.

    EUROPEAN EVANGELISM

This is a new field for many of the missionaries in Africa. We have found the

    work

    here

    n

    Chiredzi/Hippo Valley

    to

be of great challenge. Many o

    the

    people

    would

    tell

    you when

    asked

    about their

    church affiliation that they

    belonged

    to.

    . .or

. . .or. . .; butwhen itcame to church attendance that was something else. There

    was

    always the

    same old

    excuses

    and

    reasons

    for not attending. V^en

    the church of

    Christ started to

    hold

services many of the Europeans here looked and said they

won t last . Now we

    are

in the process of building our church building. This is being

done without any assistance from the States completely by the people of the congre

gation here. Thecongregation has grown steadily and has proven to the community

that they mean to stay and do the work that is

    here

    to do.

Our daughter Lynda s need for special help has made us give way to consider

ation of the many requests. Aswe do, we become more excited all the time. Some

have said that regardless of Lynda s need, itiooks like we would remain in the

    U S

to shore the vision with others and implement a program to help in other places to

    hove a similar ministry.

    To

sum it up, the Good News Studios in Rhodesia are paid off. Two families will

be ready to go this year and assume responsibilities

    which

    require presence in Rho
