    F r i e n d s :

    Greetings from

    the great

    land of Africa

    In

    th e m id s t o f this

    d a r k

    c o n t i n e n t we have

    a

    challenge and opportunity

    which

    makes us

    f i l led

    with thanksgiving.

    Thanksgiving

    for the

    message

    which has

    been

    given to

    us

    to carry and

    for you

who make I t poss ib le for us to carry

    i t

    among

the Afr ic an p eo ple . We th ink of you

    as

    you

    In g Dy^ eird-

    beginning of

    the

ceIebrat ion. in thought we wlI I take part In the

    remembrance

    of this great

    occasion.

    We also

    have

    another source of

    thanksgiving,

    to

report in this l e t te r and we want you to be

    thankful

    with

    us

    in

    your thoughts

    and

    prayers .

    Unless you know of

    the work

    here

you wil l not be able

    to

    share

with us in th anksgiv ing to God. We

    ask that you also

    consider

    the problems that

    we

    a ll

    have

    and thank

    God

    tha t

    upon

our reques t He wil l provide s t rength for the day.

    RESPONSE TO THE GOSPEL

    One-hundred f i f t een Afri can s con fe ss ed Chris t

    as the

    Son of

God dur^lng rne month of October. Many more are waiTtrrg for

    the

    mes

    sage to

    come

    to

    them

    and

    we,

    pray that they will

    be

    will ing to

    accept

Chris t as their Saviour. Evangelist AAlgar has reported

    over

    100

    of

th ese a lo ne . He has been f i l l ed wi th enthus iasm because

    America

    has

    finally sent his

    people a

    missionary. He

    is now

    living

    on the^

    Urungwe Reserve. The Dodge

    served

    to move

    his

    family and belongings,

    including goafs, dogs, and

    chickens.

    The

    Umvuma

    Church

of Chr i s t has dropped from about

    50

    to 8 and

    10 in

    the

las t 6 months due to

    disagreement

    among the

    leaders . The

    power

    of

    the Gospel

    has entered

    into the leaders

    again

    and

    now

    with

    the guidance

    of

    the

    Holy

    Spi r i t

    they

    wiI

    I

    work

    together .

    As we talk

    ed

    together they

    fel t

sure that the members would s ta r t coming back

    to

    be found

    fa i thful

    once

    again.

    On October

    29

our garden boy along with two others who have been

studying with us of the evenings whenever possible , were

    baptized

    at

    a church meeting in Selukwe.

. ANOTHER AREA TO BE SURVEYED

Dr. Pruet t returned from a

    medical

survey w ith the Inform ation

    tha t an

    area

    north

of Gokwe has no schools or re l ig ious work

    for 120

    miles . Others

    have entered but were

    unable

    to s t ay

    cau sed main ly

    by themselves .

    The

    people

    are

    not

    to

    advanced,

    but

    they want

    help .

    The t se tse

    f ly

    is

    a

    hazard to

    the

    area

    and

    one

    must

    be

    carefu l

    to

    watch for the symtoms

    and be

t reated. Since It is the area closest

    to

    us,

    i t

    seems

    only logical that we

    try to

    develope i t .

    Several

    factors are yet to

    be

    considered

    before we promise

    to

    do

    anything

    in

    the a rea . Dr

    Prue t t

    and I

    It measured

seven feet and four inches long. It was a baby. They

    VISIT TO

    AAASHOKO MISSION

    AS you know we spent

    our

    first month at

    Mashoko. Five

    years

    ago

i t was the only mission that the American Churches .of

    Christ

    were sup

    porting

    in Southern Rhodesia. It is

    now

    only one of

    six. We

    stayed^

in the home of the Pemberton s and

    vis i ted around

    th e m is sio n. 1 v i s i t

    ed

    the

seminary classes held by Mr. Pemberton and Helen went

    to some

    ladies meetings out in

    the

    villages

    with

    Mrs. Pemberton.

    We

    were

    both privileged to

    make

    rounds with Dr.

    Pruett

    and his

    excellent staff .

    I t would

    t h r i l l

    us

    to

    walk

    in to

    The

    rooms

    and watch

    the joy expressed

    by

    the

patients. I watched several major and minor operations and^

marveled at the sk i l l fu l hands of

    the

    Doctor. I went school

    vis i t ing

    with Barry

    Kennedy who

    has done

    an

    outstanding job in the educational

    developement which leads the children

    to the

    understanding Christ

    as

    the

    Son of God. The

    teacher

training, handled by Lester Cooper and

    Faye Lewis

    will

    supply

    Christian teachers

    for

    the

    village

    schools. We

    enjoyed

    the

    fellowship of a ll

    the

    missionary personnel.

    As

I bring thisTetter to a close. Jack Pennington

    stands

    in the

    same room

    with

    me. I have

    asked

    him to go to help

    select the

    mission

    site.

    The Pennington's have

    been

    a great help to us.^

    How

    thaokfi.'] we

    are for

    all our

    Christian

    brethren

both here and you in America.

    We

    thank

    God

    daily

    for

    you

    and ask God's peace and

    great

    grace to

    rest

    upon

    you.

    We

    thank

    you

    for all

    k/odnesses,

    and

    we

    He is now

    the

    by open membership

    several years

    For five

    we
