Nutraceuticals

Nutraceuticals contain an active componentfound in a nutrient / food in much higheramounts than found in the food, prepared inthe forms of tablet, capsule or liquid and areused for treatment or prophylacy.

They are not considered as

medication.

Nurtaceuticals

The term nutraceutical was first introduced byStephen DeFelice in 1989 as the combination ofthe words nutrition and pharmaceutical.

Nutraceuticals have protective or physiologicalbenefits against chronic diseases, but are notconsidered as medicines.

Sold in pharmaceutical dosage forms

Nutraceutical & Functional Food

Nutraceutical and functional food are oftenused interchangeably.

Functional food: which have health-protective, reformative and/or risk-reducingeffects as well as their nutritional effects, dueto one or more active ingredients, and theseeffects of functional foods are scientificallyand clinically proven.

Functional Foods

Natural nutrients such as; Garlic, Onion, Tomato

are known as functional foods due to their activecomponents.

Processed foods of which the active componentsare enriched/added or harmful components arereduced/subtracted, such as; Iodized salt / sodium reduced salt Omega-3-fatty acid added eggs

are also considered as functional foods

Dietary Supplement & Nutraceutical

The common point between dietarysupplement and nutraceutical is that they areboth used as nutrients.

The main difference is that dietarysupplements contain plant parts which areused as food or components obtainedtherefrom; while the active ingredientobtained from plants, which are consumed asfood, is used at high doses in case ofnutraceuticals.

Dietary Supplements

Dietary supplements are products which comprise one or more nutritional contents such as vitamins, minerals, herbal product, amino acid, fatty acid etc. and are produced in forms of tablet, capsule or liquid.

Dietary Supplement & Nutraceutical

The term dietary supplement is used in case of intake below daily required doses, to support the minimal amount which is required to be consumed to maintain the functions of the body.

The term nutraceutical is used in case of intake at higher doses than daily requirement, to support or repair the body functions.

Importance of Nutraceuticals

Many antioxidant compounds found invegetables, fruits and herbal teas reduce therisk of chronic disease by protecting the cellsfrom oxidative stress.

Page 15: NUTRACEUTICALS - acikders.ankara.edu.tr

Importance of Nutraceuticals

Anticarcinogenic effect of variouscarotenoids are scientifically proven.

Lycopene reduces the risk of cancer atprostate, breast, digestive system, skin andcervix.

Page 16: NUTRACEUTICALS - acikders.ankara.edu.tr

Importance of Nutraceuticals

Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower andcabbage reduce the risk of cancer due to theglucosinolates they contain.

Page 17: NUTRACEUTICALS - acikders.ankara.edu.tr

Importance of Nutraceuticals

It was determined that the rate of lung cancerdecreased by 50% in patients using highamounts of flavonoids, and there was aninverse relationship between increasedflavonoids consumption and the occurrenceof coronary heart disease due to antioxidantand antithrombotic effects.

It was observed that plasma total cholesteroland LDL-cholesterol levels decreased owingto flavonoid intake.

Importance of Nutraceuticals

Cinnamic acid esters, such as caffeic acidphenylethyl and benzyl esters, exhibitantiproliferative action against some types ofcancer cells.

Phenolic and phytic acids arehyocholesterolemic and reduce the risk ofbreast and colon cancers.

Page 19: NUTRACEUTICALS - acikders.ankara.edu.tr

Importance of Nutraceuticals

Polyphenolic compounds such as catechinand tannins reduce the risk of cancer andcoronary heart disease with their antioxidantproperties and provide scavenging of freeradicals and metals.

Epigallocatechin in green tea is effectiveagainst various cancer types andcardiovascular diseases.

Importance of Nutraceuticals Phytoestrogens may act as both estrogen

agonists and estrogen antagonists and maybe preferred instead of estrogen in hormonereplacement therapy in women.

Thus, irregular hemorrhage, increased risk ofbreast and endometrial cancer which arecaused by hormone therapy can beprevented.

Importance of Nutraceuticals

Phytosterols reduce serum cholesterol levelsand are found in almost all vegetables, especially in vegetable oils.

They exhibit this effect by inhibiting theabsorption of cholesterol in the intestines.

Alpha-linoleic acid is one of the vegetablefatty acids and it reduces LDL-cholesterollevel and platelet aggregation.

Nutraceuticals from Animal Origin

Omega-3- fatty acids are especially found infishes and effective in the treatment ofhypertension, Crohn's disease and asthma.

Reduce the risk of coronary arterial disease.

Necessary for new tissue formation includingfetal nerve tissue and neonatal braindevelopment in fetal life.

Reduce the severity of symptoms inrheumatoid arthritis and minimizenonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use.

Nutraceuticals from Animal Origin

It is reported that omega-3-fatty acids may be benefited in case of psychiatric disorders, emotional disorders, major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and dementia encountered during and after pregnancy period.

Lineoleic acid possesses anticarcinogenic and antiatherogenic activities.

Nutraceuticals from Animal Origin

Prebiotics (short-chain carbohydrates such asinulin, fructose and galactooligosaccharide)serve as substrates for endogenous colonbacteria. They can provide the maintanenceof the healthy state by feeding the bacteriafound in the intestines and ensuregastrointestinal system to function normally.

Page 25: NUTRACEUTICALS - acikders.ankara.edu.tr

Nutraceuticals from Animal Origin

Probiotics are microorganisms which improvethe health of the host by providing themicrobial balance in the intestines .

Reliability-Usefulness

They are generally reliable, may be used asnutrient for long periods.

Benefits / harmful effects depend on the useat correct dose.

Patients with chronic diseases, pregnant andlactating women, patients to undergosurgical intervention and those who use drugsprescribed for the same purpose shouldconsult a doctor or pharmacist.
