Today’s second reading (1 John 2:1-5) may seem contradictory. While we are told that we have Jesus as expiation for our sins, it also claims we do not know God if we do indeed sin (not follow the commandments). The way of reconciling this passage is to recognize our calling to always strive to keep his commandments so that if (“when”) we do not, we can trust that God will still be there to help instantly pick us up in order to strive again! Recognizing this is a necessary element of living our discipleship. The greatest invitation we have in life is to know God, and part of that recognizes that we are meant to instantly turn to him. Of course we want to always avoid (and never make an excuse to commit) sin, but if we sin we still have a choice. If we choose to stay there and wallow in the sin (“I blew it, so what difference does it make so I might as well stay here for a while”) we are only making things worse, more complicated, more painful. The other option is to instantly pray, “God forgive me, help me!” This is not only so we can “stop the bleeding” right away but it can also help us take steps to undo the damage caused by seeking the forgiveness of those we may have harmed by our decisions. There is even the potential for our mistakes to be transformed into something good via a resolve to never make that mistake again—which solidifies our commitment to living the lives we were created to live! But as great as it is to rely on God’s help to get us out of the mire caused by our wrong decisions, the greater invitation is to rely on God’s help to avoid the mire in the first place! The teachings of our most-wonderful faith are not to restrict us in misery but to free and protect us for the greatest happiness possible. Yet God knows it is not easy in this world that bombards us with the temptations not just to sin but to not be instruments of God’s love for others, and that is precisely why God offers his help every step of the way! But the key is to strive to love as God loves us, because the more we can love the more naturally the adherence to all of God’s commandments will flow! Through love, prayer, the sacraments, and pursuing the greatest of relationships possible with God and others, God’s love will indeed be perfected within us! - Fr. APRIL 15 • ST. JOAN OF ARC • 3

On April 21, we have our annual Family Faith and Fun Day. It is an opportunity for us to pay attention to the basic unit of society and church, the family, the “Domestic Church,” the “Church of the Home.” We all were born into and grew up within a family. Our basic sense of personal security and identity was shaped within our family of origin. We learned what it meant to be a human being, how to share, forgive, support, and love unselfishly. We also learned the important lessons of working together to make good things happen, and to accept and learn even from failure. The bonds of family give us nurturance, security, and a sense of belonging. From the religious perspective, family is the first place that we learn the most important truth, that we are created and loved by God, and have a mission and purpose in this world. Family faith, practiced regularly, becomes a good habit that will support us through life’s triumphs and tragedies.

Here at Saint Joan of Arc, families work hard to live and pass on our faith. We do so while recognizing the pressures, tensions and difficulties that are also a part of family life. Concerns of finances, job security, health, marital happiness, issues of maturity and aging, child-rearing stresses etc. all require strength and courage. It is with faith, however, that they are manageable and may even be the source of development in character and virtue. It is not easy to be a “counter cultural” family of faith that worships and loves God, and cares for neighbors. Christian life today really has an element of struggle and disconnect with a culture that is non-believing, secularized, and materialistic. More important than all that, however, we have to celebrate the vitality and endurance of the “Family of Faith” of today. So we come together to support one another, and to have fun together. Our Day for Faith and Family Fun.

Our “Celebration of Faith and Fun” brings us together for a morning and early afternoon in order to have fun and enjoy God’s great gift of “Play.” We know that without play we tire, lose enthusiasm, creativity and a zest for living. Play gets us out of the world of work, routine, the predictable and the boring. When we play we live in a different world of spontaneity, creativity, freedom, and the time out of time that we call “playtime.”

As adults we can participate directly or vicariously in the events of “Family, Faith and Fun Day.” But most of all, we are filled with joy as we see our children with painted faces, engrossed in “musical chairs” or the “ring toss” or the petting zoo. On Saturday, Family Faith and Fun come together and perfectly complement one another on April21 in Boca Raton, Florida.

At this time we are also having a lot of activity in our school with school open-house visitations, Arts Night, and soon Drama Productions. We will also have Deacon Ordinations here for all of the Dioceses of Florida on April 14 at 11:00. Soon, on Friday April 20, at 7:30 in the church, we will host the Delray Chorale again for a beautiful evening of “In Praise of Peace” concert.

So much for a quiet spring! Our post-Easter season is truly one of new life and joyful celebrations. Alleluia

FINALIZING OUR JOURNEY FORWARD CAMPAIGN GOALSIn 2011, the Journey Forward Strategic plan gathered the parish community together to discuss and create plans for how the St. Joan community would adapt for the future in 2016. A short time later, in November of 2013, one of the initiatives that grew out of those strategic plans was the Journey Forward Capital Campaign, and from there the rest became history. Fast forward, here we are today, in what seems like a blink of an eye, it is April 2018. I am certain that most of you would agree, the last 7 years have been quite the Journey! With broad-based participation and community input, an idea was born; that idea blossomed into a plan, and lastly, the plan came to a realization. What a true blessing for all of us to have witnessed.

The SJA faith community has rallied behind this project and raised an astonishing amount of money to complete our Journey Forward Capital Campaign Financial obligations.

We have been extremely fortunate, just when we thought we were going to be saddled with a debt to the Diocese, we were blessed not once but three times with a Matching Gift challenge and each time members of the community embraced and supported this cause.

With your help, once again, we hope to raise the final $33,000 which will complete the 2018 Matching Gift Challenge. This $100,000 match along with the $100,000 raised will complete our Journey Forward Financial Obligation to the Diocese.

We will still be busy collecting pledges from our earlier campaign initiatives of close to $360,000, but those funds combined with the 2018 Matching Gift Challenge funds, will complete the last fundraising challenge of the Journey Forward Campaign.

Together as a giving community, we have come further than anyone could have imagined. Thank you to all who have generously supported the Campaign. To those who have not yet made a commitment to our Journey Forward campaign, there is still time to be a part of this successful endeavor. Please take part in this campaign, join the rest of the community, and say that you have made a significant difference in the Future of St. Joan of Arc.

Make a difference by making a donation today! There are several ways to make a donation, simply complete the form in the bulletin and mail it to the Church’s address, or make a donation at www.stjoan.org by clicking on the donate button at the top of the page. If I can be of further assistance please contact the Development Office for more information.

This was a non-faith-based symposium and was open to participants of all age in the entire community. On day one we addressed The Problem with Dr. Ahmed Howeedy, MD, who explained the medical and neurological aspects of opioid addiction. Dr. Beau Nelson, DBH, LCSW covered the emotional and psychological factors of addiction. Law enforcement first responder Bob Lemon & Fire Department Officer Bart L. Galletta talked about the overdose scenarios they deal with and direction on what to do in those situations. And the Chief Assistant State Attorney Alan S. Johnson, leader of the State Attorney’s Sober Homes Task Force, explained in detail the heroin epidemic and rogue actors in the industry who engage in fraud and abuse as well as addressing the efforts to make Florida’s laws more effective in confronting these problems. On day two the experts talked about the “Solutions and Help for Family Members.” Dr. Beau Nelson, DBH, LCSW spoke on the solutions, recovery, brain healing, nutrition and more. Dr. Rotondo addressed solutions for emotional and psychological recovery. We also had three recovered addicts and councilors in different areas: Harvey B. speaking on the family in recovery, John Giodonald explaining the importance of nutrition in the recovery process, and Laura K. who went over the recovering addict process and how the family is affected. We closed with Pastor Dennis W. Glick, with the Church and the Clergy response to this epidemic, creating community awareness in addressing this epidemic and encouraging involvement to work on this crisis.

"It is so important as a community and as a parish that we attend to this opiod drug crisis from within the context of education, family and of our faith. We all need further education concerning the way these drugs affect us and how they are obtained. We also need to do everything we can to combat their entrance into our families and particularly to protect our elderly and our youth. Finally we know that without God's help and guidance, we will lack the divine wisdom we need to attend to the spiritual dimension of this crisis. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we must care for our souls and for our spiritual welfare in what is truly a combat with evil."

ST. JOAN OF ARC SCHOOL AROUND THE WORLD DAYAround the World Day is an annual tradition at St. Joan of Arc School! This year's theme featured where the Sisters of Mercy live throughout the world. Classrooms and hallways were decorated with student artwork and projects. Students had an opportunity to "travel" to different places and explore other countries and parts of the United States through games, videos, activities, and sampling of some of the cuisine! Travelers also got to hear interesting facts about the Sisters of Mercy and what good works they are doing, too.

PUTTING OUR FEARS TO REST By Mary Katharine DeeleyDuring a particularly difficult period at one place I worked, I would come home at night and rehash conversations and events, wondering whether the outcome would have been different if I’d said or done something else.I wonder whether the apostles asked themselves the same kinds of questions after the crucifixion. “Should we have done something differently? Could we have prevented this somehow?” Perhaps they locked the door because they were afraid they’d be put to death too. When we’re in a bad situation, sometimes all we want to do is hide. It’s a child’s response: If I don’t look at it, maybe it will go away. But the locked door was no barrier, and Jesus came and stood in their midst. Rather than ridicule their fear, he gently put it to rest: “Peace be with you.” The more Jesus talked, the more they heard, and they came to know that the peace of the Lord is not like the world’s peace. It’s not a temporary measure that will only give way to more turmoil. Jesus calmly and lovingly put their fears to rest. It wasn’t that the world was suddenly going to be welcoming; rather, they would be confident in the new life that was in them and in the grace Christ alone can give.Jesus does this for us as well. He walks through the locked doors of our hearts and blesses us with peace. The more we listen to Jesus’ words, the more we can understand and witness to his truth.

TRANSFORMED BY EASTER By Richard Rohr, O.F.M.

Christian history reaches its crescendo in the resurrection. The risen Jesus is the final revelation of the heart of God—a God who teaches love rather than hate, forgiveness rather than blame, nonviolence rather than violence.

Recall Jesus’ encounters with his disciples after his resurrection. He came to his followers with whom he had spent three years, the people closest to him who had nevertheless rejected, betrayed, and abandoned him. Following his resurrection Jesus had the opportunity to chastise them. And yet, in all four Gospel accounts we see that the risen Jesus neither berates nor blames his disciples. Indeed, Peter, who had betrayed him three times, is given three chances to say “I love you” to his master.

There is nothing to fear in the risen Christ. We have in him the perfect icon of a God who is safe. We have a God who does not blame, punish, threaten, or dominate. We have a God who breathes forgiveness. The entire biblical tradition has been moving to this moment where God is identified with universal forgiveness.

Jesus’ resurrection tells us that there is no victory through domination. There is no such thing as triumph by force. By his life, death, and resurrection Jesus stops the cycle of violence, challenging the notion of dominating power. He invites us to relational or spiritual power, where we are not just changed but transformed.

REDEMPTIVE FORGIVENESS Many of us identify more easily with the judging God we may have encountered in childhood: the one who knows our every sin and metes out punishments, the one we must attempt to placate and please. Often, we are more comfortable living with a fearsome God than one whose love is boundless. But by his life, death, and resurrection Jesus challenges us to new heights of redemptive forgiveness.

Most of us cannot go for long without thinking a judgmental or accusatory thought about others. So often, there

is someone we’re judging, accusing, blaming. To live in the good, to live in the love, to live without a need to judge—that’s major surgery! None of us reaches that point early in life, but when we’re there we know we’re transformed. We’re free. We are at one with the risen Jesus.

Once we have a personal experience in our own life of the risen Christ upholding, loving, and

freeing us, then we have nothing to fear. That’s how secure Christ makes us, because we have a center point. We have received the gift of the Spirit.

DIVINE LURE During a retreat, my fellow retreatants and I were asked to list the adjectives each of us would use to describe

Jesus. My list included words such as compassionate, self-confident, humble, forgiving. When our leader brought us back together as a group she suggested that the qualities we had identified represented not so much what Jesus was like, but what each of us wanted in ourselves. Jesus is the divine lure who invites us forward in our humanity, enticing us into these virtues by his own full living of them. The qualities I had on my list are indeed qualities Jesus possessed. But the reason we want to embrace them is because Jesus has set the standard, the ideal for humanity.

In Jesus we see the divine being who is also the perfect human being. Jesus comes in human form to show us the face of God, who is eternally compassionate and joyous, standing with us in our sufferings and joys. As Christians, our vocation is to unite with Christ crucified and risen. +
