REFLECT "Now what?" It's a difficult thing to hear, isn't it? The train comes late, a child unexpectedly cries, and the latest public policy debate flares up in the news. Life throws us curveballs, and we have no choice but to adapt. Jesus and the Apostles find themselves in that exact situation in today's Gospel.

The Apostles have returned from their two-by-two missionary journey. As Jesus hears all of their stories, he knows they need time to recover and refresh. "Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while." Their wilderness retreat is short-lived, however, as eager crowds discover their location. Jesus is well aware of the needs of his disciples. Still, as he looks out at the crowd, "His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd." The rest break is over. "He began to teach them many things."

For those of us who have experienced a taste of much-needed relaxation only to have it taken away abruptly, perhaps we surmise what the Apostles might have been feeling in that moment. But Jesus isn't being inconsiderate of the Apostles needs. He offers them -- and us -- a lived lesson. St. John Paul II wrote, "The whole of Christ's life was a continual teaching: his silences, his miracles, his gestures, his prayer, his love for people, his special affection for the little and the poor, his acceptance of the total sacrifice on the Cross for the redemption of the world" (On Catechesis in Our Time, 9). In Jesus' choice to teach, we see all of these things: sacrificial love, concern for the marginalized, and priority of people's needs over personal preference. These aren't abstract ideals. They're lived realities as we strive to live and love like Jesus. When a new obstacle confronts you in your life, how do you respond?

PARISH LISTENING SESSION August 6, 2018

What are you thinking? The Archbishop of Hartford wants to know.

We invite all St. Jeanne Jugan parishioners to express their opinions at our Listening Session on three critical questions:

What are we (as an Archdiocese) doing well?

What are we (as an Archdiocese) not doing so well?

What are we (as an Archdiocese) not doing that we should be?

The Archdiocesan Synod titled “Stewards for Tomorrow” is considering the future from the perspective of the New Evangelization, a missionary challenge articulated by Pope Francis.

On August 6, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, we will hold our Listening Session in Father Fitzmaurice Hall at St. Bernard Church, beginning with a light meal. If you are willing to participate, please respond to Sally at the St. Bernard rectory at 860-749-8353 by August 1st. Thank you!

MISSION APPEAL FOR CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF PATHANAMTHITTA, INDIA I, Msgr. John Thundiyathu, would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude and thanks to Rev. John S. Golas, the Pastor, and all the parishioners of St. Jeanne Jugan Parish for giving us an opportunity to make this Appeal for the Diocese of Pathanamthitta. I would like to make this Appeal before you on August 4 and 5, 2018.

The Catholic Diocese of Pathanamthitta was erected by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI bifurcating Archdiocese of Trivandrum on pastoral and administrative grounds in March 2010. The Diocesan area has a population of 1,200,000 and the Catholic faithful in this Diocese is 45,000. The Pathanamthitta Diocese is located in Kerala, South India.

The formation of future priests has become urgently important in the building up of the diocese. We have 62 Seminarians studying and their formation to priesthood is of prime importance. They have to be supported financially from the diocese during the course of their study because many of the candidates belong to low income families. It would be a great help to the diocese if you are able to provide financial assistance to the seminarians in their journey to priesthood. We have churches to be built, rectories to be constructed and new missions to be started.

We know that a diocese doesn’t have relevance if she closes her eyes to the needs of the poor irrespective of cast and creed. Therefore, through the social service society, the diocese tries to help many people who are economically, socially, and educationally down. We have given special attention for the well-being and care of the marginalized of the society. Homes run by the diocese for the mentally challenged and a home for the physically challenged help the downtrodden from the area by giving them hope and showing them mercy.

We have 106 priests and 100 mission/churches, serving the people of God. Nearly half of the churches are in remote hilly areas. The needs are huge and the resources are very little. We hope that our Lord will provide all that we need to build up this new diocese. Hence, I request your valuable prayers and support in this regard. God Bless, Msgr. John Thundiyathu

CHILDREN’S PAGE Welcome to the Children’s Page! Over the next five weeks, while school is on summer break, this page will contain a picture of the Gospel reading for that week. We encourage the children of our Parish to take the bulletin home, color the picture, put their name

and age on it and place it in the collection basket the following week. We will hang the pictures in the vestibules of Holy Family Church and St. Bernard Church. We hope all our younger parishioners will have fun coloring while learning about the Gospel!

The St. Bernard School and Little Angels Pre-School page will return on August 26th.

Open Enrollment is available for grades K-8 for the 2018-2019 school year. If you are looking for a family community, warm and nurturing environment where your child will succeed academically, spirituality, socially and emotionally, call for a tour and we will be

happy to show you what SBS has to offer your child and family. Tuition assistance available to families. Do not let cost stand in the way of your child's future success! Private tours are available. Call us at 860-745-5275. We would love to meet you and your child.

We are accepting applications for 2018-2019.

THANK YOU FROM THE ST. JEANNE JUGAN YOUTH GROUP

Thank you for your support in helping us to attend the Steubenville East Youth Conference from July 13th - 15th. We had so much fun together all weekend, from the opening Mass at St. Anne's Shrine in Sturbridge to closing Mass with Cardinal O'Malley at UMass Lowell on Sunday morning. More importantly, we experienced the love of Christ in new ways this weekend.

This year's conference theme was "REVEALED." Christ's love for us was truly revealed to us this weekend through reconciliation, adoration, and the Eucharist. We were given tools to help us find Christ's love in our world and to show that love to others. We appreciate the financial support and prayers from our parishioners. We prayed for all of you this weekend and we will keep all of you in our prayers as we work together to grow in our faith and ask that you pray for us on our faith journey. We can't wait to return for next year's conference, "BELONG!"
