CPAN® and CAPA® Certified Nurses Exceed 10,000

With completion of the Spring 2012 examination cycle, ABPANC has certified 10,184 perianesthesia nurses (6,250 CPANs, 3,934 CAPAs, 460 dually certified). This milestone achievement represents the growing value of certification in perianesthesia nursing.

Our 2012 Advocacy Award Winner Is ... Connie Hardy Tabet, RN, CPAN®, CAPA®, a staff nurse and part time charge nurse in the PACU/Outpatient Surgery Unit of the University of New Mexico Hospital. Tabet regularly demonstrates a personal compassion and commitment to perianesthesia nursing and has gone above and beyond her normal job responsibilities to take initiative as a patient advocate. Recertification-Related Information • The process for recertification is done completely online. Those individuals

due to recertify must read the Recertification Handbook (available on ABPANC’s website) under the Recertification section. Instructions will be provided in the First Renewal Notice, sent to certificants in July (for the Fall Recertification Cycle) and January (for the Spring Recertification Cycle).

• To access the online Recertification System, go to the ABPANC website and click on the link found on the Home Page, under the Recertification tab.

• For convenience, certificants can log in and track their contact hours in the new Continual Learning Log, update their contact information, receive emails from ABPANC, and complete the recertification process.

• New certificants can create a user account anytime by visiting the ABPANC website and clicking the Create User Account link found on the Home Page under Recertification.

Interested in becoming a Certification Coach? We have a new Lesson Plan (Study Guide) to assist you in leading a group of certification candidates as you help them prepare for exam. Coaching can be a very rewarding way to get involved with the ABPANC community and make a difference in your profession. Interested in becoming a Cyber Item Writer through our Remote Item Writer (RIW) system? Share your unique knowledge and experience in perianesthesia nursing to develop potential CPAN and CAPA certification exam questions. Learn how to write exam questions by attending an online webinar and receive all the information you need to write items from your home. Contact Vita Greco for more details – vgreco@proexam.org.

Earn Free Contact Hours Volunteer Coaches earn three contact hours a year for having coached at least one individual. Item Writers receive two contact hours for each submitted item, and can earn up to 60 contact hours in a 3-year recertification period to apply towards recertification.

New Resources

ABPANC is launching a new Lesson Plan (Study Guide) for nurses who would like to form a study group or who might need assistance developing their own study plan. This 12-week plan provides an outline and organization of information to be covered in approximately 4 hours per week. 2012 Advocacy Award Winner (cont. from page 1) In this year’s nomination, Connie Hardy Tabet, RN, CPAN®, CAPA®, was recognized for using her power of innovative problem solving to help a patient who felt helpless and abandoned when her designated ride didn’t show up. Tabet arranged for a taxi to take her home and called the patient’s minister to arrange for a church member to meet the patient at her home. She obtained a voucher to pay for the taxi fare, made a trip to the offsite pharmacy to fill the patient’s prescriptions, and even shared her lunch with the patient.

Linda Rogers, RN, CAPA, a colleague, nominated Tabet for the award and received a $100 cash award for her nomination. Tabet received a framed certificate, the Lladro Statue of a nurse, and a scholarship to cover her next recertification fee. ABPANC awarded Tabet’s unit with a check for $350 to be used for certification fees, continuing education fees, books or study guides.
