NUI Starting with HCI

What is Human Computer Interaction? It is the study of interaction between people (users) and computers.

It is often regarded as the intersection of computer science, behavioral sciences, design and several other fields of study

NUI Areas relevant to HCI

On the machine side, techniques in computer graphics, operating systems, programming languages, and development environments are relevant.

On the human side, communication theory, graphic and industrial design disciplines, linguistics, social sciences, cognitive psychology, and human factors are relevant.

HCI draws from supporting knowledge on both the machine and the human side.

NUI NUI as a part of HCI

A NUI relies on a user being able to carry out relatively natural motions, movements or gestures that they quickly discover control the computer application or manipulate the on-screen content.

NUI is an emerging paradigm shift in HCI of computer interfaces to refer to a user interface that is effectively invisible, or becomes invisible with successive learned interactions, to its users.

NUI Focus of NUI

Focuses on traditional human abilities such as - Touch- Vision - Speech - Handwriting- Motion

More importantly higher level processes such as - Cognition- Creativity - Exploration

NUI Types of NUI Technologies

Touch Screens

It is an electronic visual display that can detect the presence and location of a touch within the display area.

Direct Voice Input

In which the user makes voice commands to issue instructions to the machine.

NUI Types of NUI Technologies

Automatic Identification

It refers to the methods of automatically identifying objects, collecting data about them, and entering that data directly into computer systems without human involvement.

Augmented Reality

It is a term for a live direct or an indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input, such as sound or graphics.

NUI Work and research areas

The scope of work and areas of research include:

The problems people have while operating computers.

The impact of computers upon people in individual, organizational, social, and learning contexts.

The determinants of utility, usability, satisfaction, and acceptability.

Modeling the user as an aid to better system design.

Harmonizing the computer to the characteristics and needs of users.

NUI The future technology

The next couple slides will show you people that how Natural User Interfaces are becoming part of our everyday lives and a few examples of ways in which this technology is utilized.

The next slide is a short video of Steve Ballmer, the CEO of Microsoft, discusses at the Consumer Electronics Show(CES) in 2009 that how natural user interfaces, such as voice and touch, will become mainstream in the coming years

NUI Application

Here I am going to show you a brief demonstration on application of Natural User Interfaces.

The Multi-touch software called touchEarth, which allows the users to use two finger gestures to control Google Earth.

Multi-touch software differs from traditional touchscreen technology in that it allows the user to apply multiple fingers simultaneously, creating a more natural and simple use of touchscreen technologies.

The video you are about to see also demonstrates viewerApp, which incorporates Multi-touch allowing you to type text using a touch screen.

NUI Challenge

The cost associated with this products is very high.

It is a cutting edge technology that requires a lot of specialized manpower to build it.

The research involved in creating this new technology is also quite staggering.

All this means increased cost of production for the business and this in turn can translate to lower demands.

However, the technology is a huge leap and it can revolutionize the way machines operate in the future, provided the costs are brought down by the companies.
