NSC WG2 Hazard Indentification – 26 Feb 2013 Prague22
Wish list● Information exchange of methods available within the Cluster
– Sharing protocols for testing if appropriate● Harmonised methods/requirements for
– kinetic investigation– appropriate toxicological endpoints– appropriate in vitro tests (e.g. cell lines)
● Comparison in-vitro versus in-vivo results● Validation of appropriate testing methods including identification of
limitations● Requirements for screening tests● Description of correlation between
– biological effects and material properties (cooperation Working Group 1)– bioavailability/bioaccumulation/ADME and NP properties (cooperation
Working Group 1)– biological effects and exposure aspects and LCA (cooperation Working
Group 3)● Provision of results and outcome to the database (cooperation Working
Group 4)

Four focus groups•Immunosafety focus group•Marine Ecotox focus group•Biomembrane Nanosafety focus group•Genotoxicity Focus group
NSC WG2 Hazard Indentification – 26 Feb 2013 Prague4
Tasks● Information exchange of methods available within the Cluster
– Methods/requirements for appropriate toxicological endpoints– Methods/requirements for appropriate in vitro tests (e.g. cell
lines)– Sharing protocols for testing if appropriate
● Established an on line protocol database /submission option: http://www.nanosafetycluster.eu/working-groups/2-hazard-wg/protocol-database.html
› Flemming Cassee
NSC WG2 Hazard Indentification – 26 Feb 2013 Prague5
Tasks● Harmonised methods/requirements for biokinetic investigation
– A list of research groups that perform biokinetic studies including the contact person and a short description of the experimental design and studies nanomaterials will be compiled.
– Review on recent biodistribution studies (work in progress)› Dave Spurgeon
● Create summaries of key results for further use by the dissemination group (cooperation Working Group 7)– Revised to sharing summeries from scientific meetings– Members provide input for the NanoVision 2020 document
› Teresa Fernandes
NSC WG2 Hazard Indentification – 26 Feb 2013 Prague6
Focus group: Immunosafety› Diana Boraschi, Albert Duschl and Bengt Fadeel
● Involve the excellent immunological expertise in Europe: – DB chairing a workshop at the International Congress of Immunology August 2013
● Disseminate the concept of immunosafety among nanotoxicologists– DB and AD writing an “immunology manual for nanotoxicologists” (Elsevier)– BF and DB writing a chapter on nanoparticles and the immune system for the
second edition of “Nanotoxicology” (Informa Healthcare)– David Pozo Pérez launching a series of Special Focus Papers on interaction between
nanoparticles and immune system on Journal of Nanoparticle Research– DB & AD joining with the leaders of the Marine Ecotox Focus Group in a Opinion
paper on immunity of environmental species as key issue of nano-ecotoxicology– DB and AD proposing a ESF/EMBO course of immunosafety of nanomaterials– DB delivering a lesson on immunosafety at the 4th Nanosafety School in March 2013
● Standardising immunosafety assays– Andrea Haase leading in Qnano the Task of immunoassay standardisation– Peter Hoet and DB developing and validating endotoxin assessment assays for
nanoparticles
NSC WG2 Hazard Indentification – 26 Feb 2013 Prague7
Focus group Marine Ecotox › Ilaria Corsi Joint initiative between the two
focus groups immunology and marine ecotox, –a position paper on immune responses of environmental species (Teresa).
NSC WG2 Hazard Indentification – 26 Feb 2013 Prague8
Focus groups
●Biomembranes› Andrew Nelson
●Genotoxicity › Maria Dusinska
NSC WG2 Hazard Indentification – 26 Feb 2013 Prague9
Other● Symposium on Safety issues and regulatory challenges of
nanomaterials - May 2012– Socorro Vázquez-Campos (NANOPOlYTOX), Sergio Moya (HINAMOX),
Maria Blázquez (NEPHH), Lang Tran (ENPRA) and Juan Riego Sintes (JRC)
● Input to the Strategic Research Agenda / NanoVision 2020
Future● Organize a meeting, best done as a satellite to a meeting where
many members will come anyway. – E.g. a joint meeting of NanoValid and MARINA, – E.g. Joint meeting NanoMile and NanoSolutions– Nanotoxicology 2014
