Dear Friends,We put a long banner up in the lobby –asking – “What do you love about the NSC?” Many people reference aparticular activity, but, the overarching theme is the people. Some of the comments refer to the kind, caring, welcoming, active, fun…… people. Being around positive people in a warm and welcoming environment canmake such a difference in our lives. One of my favorite times of the day is when a large group finishes an exercise class or activity and there is such positive energy in the lobby.

Looking back at the history of the Center, community leaders realized the importance of providing a gatheringspace for seniors. Although many of us may not really consider ourselves seniors, we are all very fortunate tohave such a wonderful place where we can remain involved and engaged in our community. It is also a place thatprovides a wealth of information and services that can help us to prolong independent living.

One of the comments on the banner says, “The Center is now a Senior”. Maybe we have reached our primeand our best years are behind us. But, I hope that the Center, just as our members, will continue to play avibrant role in the Newark community for many years to come.

Some of you may be familiar with the Charles Parks sculpture at the north end of the building. Margaret Catts, our second Executive Director said to me one day that she felt the title referred to the Center. Grow OldAlong With Me, the Best is Yet To Be - the “Me” being the Center. Although we are all very grateful for thiswonderful facility, it really is the people that make it a truly special and unique Center. A very special thanks toour many members, volunteers and staff who have contributed so much as we recognize the first 50 years.

Community News FITNESS CENTER CORNERStretching. It’s probably not a big blip on your radar, but it may be something to consider. Recently, a physical therapist wrote a column in The News Journaland said “stretching can and should be done daily”and I’m inclined to agree. Stretching, or flexibility exercises give you more freedom of movement duringphysical activity and for everyday activities such asgetting dressed and reaching objects on a shelf. Ifyou’re interesting in a good website that discussesstretching and flexibility, search: National Institute ofHealth, Senior Health and then type flexibility in thesearch bar. It’s a great resource!~ Contributed by Marci Mantegna, Fitness Center Site Manager,CardioKinetics

ANNUAL FLEA MARKET PROFITSThe semi-annual sales held to benefit the NewarkSenior Center are a tremendous success! The success of these sales is really a credit to hundreds ofdonors, volunteers, and staff. We accept donationsof a wide variety of items during the months ofApril and October. We rely on a small army of volunteers to properly display the items throughoutthe entire building. We then count on many shoppers to take advantage of the huge selection oftreasures. The Brookside and Newark Lions Clubshave been feeding hungry shoppers for many yearswith Chicken BBQs, Spaghetti Dinners and PancakeBreakfasts. The Glasgow Lion’s Club helps us by

transporting the leftover goods to communities inneed. As you can see – the “flea markets” havegrown tremendously over the years and are a realcommunity effort.

Please take advantage of thefree Programming at the nsC,inCluded in your membershiP,

CENTER SATURDAY HOURS10:00am - 2:00pm (4/2 and 4/16)RECEPTION DESKOpen Monday – Friday: 9:00am – 4:00pmAt the Reception Desk, you can find:• Suggestion Box • Greeting Card Exchange• Lost & FoundThe NSC Reception Desk is staffed by dedicated volunteers who can:• Give you a tour of the Center• Sign you up for NSC memberships• Register you for classes, trips and activities• Sign you up for Bus Service (in person or phone)Thank you volunteers who give their time at theDesk.

OPEN-DOOR POLICY - Please know that if you havequestions or concerns about the NSC I will do mybest to try to address them. Please be respectful ofstaff when they are on the phone or in a meeting. You are welcome to have a seat in the Receptionarea until the staff member is available. ~Carla Grygiel, Executive DirectorWHY SHOULD I PRE-REGISTER? - Often, in thenewsletter, you will be asked to register at theReception Desk. It is important that you do so forseveral reasons.1. We sometimes cancel a class/trip due to low registration. If you are interested and do not signup, you might miss out on a class/trip that you areinterested in.2. If a class is cancelled and you are not registered,we can’t call you to notify you of the cancellation. Then you come to the Center and are disappointedthat you have made the trip for a cancelled class. 3. Instructors will often ask us for a number of registrations. This helps them to prepare for theclass and make the appropriate number of handouts. 4. Room assignments might be able to be adjustedto accommodate a smaller or larger group, but thistoo depends on the number of registrations. ~Thank you!
