Myth Hunter Challenge 1
Myth Hunters
• Dr. Abley wanted to see if you were up to the challenge.
• Are you able to see what are real (true) animals/ beasts and what are mythical (false)?
DragonA dragon’s body is covered in scales. It uses leathery, bat-like wings to fly. Its jaws are filled with hundreds of sharp teeth and when it breathes, smoke and flames shoot from its teeth.
False!Based on crocodiles and snakes
Fossilised dinosaur teethGreek word:
‘drák nō ’ = water-snake
CoelacanthA Coelacanth is a
huge, blue fish with powerful jaws and sharp
teeth. His body is covered in heavy, armoured scales and he has four
fins at each corner of his body so he
can walk.
True!
They live in the Indian Ocean and, before 1938,
scientists thought they had become extinct. They were discovered by
fisherman off the South coast of Africa.
Cerebus
Cerebus is a very different type of dog. He has dragon-like
spines down his back and three heads. He can be quite friendly if
you offer him cake soaked in honey. What a sweet tooth!
False!Cerebus was the guardian of
Hades (the underworld where dead people’s spirits went). He
stopped people escaping!A famous Greek myth is that Hercules defeated Cerebus
without weapons and took him from Hades, slung over his back!
DodoThe Dodo was one of the many
animals that was in Alice in Wonderland. It has soft grey
feathers yellow eyes and short yellow legs. On the end of its legs are four toes with thick black claws. It cannot fly.
True! The Dodo live in the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. It was 3.3
metres tall. It didn’t need to fight as there were no predicators on the island and lots of food. Dutch sailors visited the island
and, by1681, all the Dodos had been eaten.
Giant SquidThe giant squid lives in the deepest, darkest parts of the ocean.
Sometimes it comes to the surface in search of
prey. If it can’t find a whale to eat, the giant
squid wraps it enormous tentacles
around a passing boat to drag it down the the
murky depths.
True!
They can grow up to 13 metres for the
females and 10 metres for the male. Like all squid, it has a torso, eight arms and two longer tentacles.

Pegasus
Myth Hunter: Challenge 2:Writing
CluesWe are now going to look at a text and hunt for
interesting clues.
Bellerophon was a great hero. His greatest desire was to ride the magnificent winged horse, Pegasus. Pegasus could fly like a bird and was very hard to catch. Bellerophon thought he would never even get close to Pegasus, let alone tame him and ride him. One night, the goddess Athena appeared to him in a dream. "What man swears cannot be done, should not be hoped for. Power on high will place it in his hands with ease."
Pegasus and Bellerophon
Bellerophon woke to find a shiny, golden bridle at his feet. He went to Pegasus' favorite, flower-filled meadow and found the fantastic horse. Pegasus trotted right over and allowed himself to be mounted without a struggle!
Horse and rider were a perfect match; they had many exciting and successful adventures. Unfortunately for Bellerophon, he was determined to become a god. One day, he leaped onto Pegasus and urged him up toward Olympus, the home of the gods. Pegasus was as wise as an owl and for the first time, would not obey. He threw his rider to the ground and flew quickly away! Bellerophon, whose ambition had grown too great, wandered on foot for the rest of his life, avoiding contact with other people.
Myth Hunters!Part of a great myth is the way it is told.
This means the words and techniques used. Now we will look at different techniques in this story.Pay attention as you will be having a go yourself soon
too!
Which techniques have been used?
