PORTERFIELD’S PASTORAL PONDERINGS I have been reading ‘Remember The Future’ by our Bishop Robert Schnase. I have always found his writing

relevant and thought provoking. Remembering the Future is about the church and change. Our church and

all churches are in the midst of cultural shifts requiring greater and greater change on our part if we are to be

about God’s business in the future. I asked our Bishop for permission to share from his book, with you, in

our newsletter; and he gladly said yes. Join me in a season (6 -12 months) of prayer and discernment as we

seek to clarify God’s guidance.

Blessings

The Most Significant Arena

Methodism began as a way of life. Wesley organized people into societies, classes, and bands in order

to provide a disciplined accountability to sustain growth in Christ and growth in service. Early Wesleyans

were chided for their “methodical” adherence to practices that included worship, the sacraments, daily

prayers, Bible study, classes, giving to the poor, visiting the sick and imprisoned. Every organizational

innovation fostered that way of life. Circuits were created as a means of providing the sacraments and for

deploying leaders. Class tickets were given and giving records were maintained, not merely to provide an

accounting for the aggregate totals, but to hold each person accountable for growth in Christ. Wesley did not

establish faith communities so that he could have a conference; he established a conference to support the

work of Christ through faith communities.

Throughout the history of Methodism, the primary means by which we have brought people into this

way of life has been through faith communities. Congregations offer the invitation and embrace of Christ.

They offer worship that connects people to God and that stimulates the change of heart that transforms lives

so that people see the world through God’s eyes. Congregations provide the means to grow in faith through

small groups. Bible studies, support groups, and the care of souls. People cooperate with the Holy Spirit in

their own sanctification, growing in grace and in the knowledge and love of God. And fruitful congregations

help people discern the calling of God to ministries of service, mission, and justice. They provide avenues for

life-changing, sacrificial service that transforms the world. Congregations draw people into the body of

Christ, and through congregations God changes the world.

3 CLUMC MESSENGER Porterfield’s Pastoral Ponderings Continued

Consider the impact of congregations on your own life. Suppose we could extract from your life all the influences that God has had on you through congregations. Imagine we could pull out of your mind and heart all the thousands of sermons you have heard, the tens of thousands of hymns you have sung, the pastoral prayers and personal devotions that have formed you. Remove from your life all the pastors, friends, colleagues, laypersons, youth leaders, and teachers who have encouraged and embraced you in the faith. Extract from your soul all the work projects, the meetings, the soup kitchens, mission projects, hospital visits and support from others you have experienced. Remove all the volunteer hours, stewardship campaigns, mission fairs, camp experiences, and youth ministries.

If someone removed from your life all the influences congregations have ever had on you, you’d be someone totally different. The congregations you have belonged to have changed and shaped you. Congregations are a primary means by which God reaches into our lives to work on our behalf to create us anew, to claim us as God’s own, and to call us to God’s service. It is through congregations that God’s Spirit shapes how we understand ourselves, how we relate to our families, how we view community, and how we participate in the world.

Jesus intentionally formed his followers into a community of disciples to fulfill this mission. United Methodist congregations exist today for the same mission for which Jesus gathered his disciples and for which the Holy Spirit unified those who gathered on the day of Pentecost. The United Methodist Church makes disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by repeating over and over again what has happened in your life and mine. In small congregations and large, in urban and rural churches, in every place and culture and language, God works through faith communities to change lives.

The Call to Action invites the leaders of The United Methodist Church to redirect the flow of attention, energy, and resources to an intense concentration on fostering and sustaining an increase in the number of vital congregations effective in making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The focus on congregations is not about institutional survival, an obsession on numbers, or a fear of failure. It is about returning to the basics. In the first sentence that immediately follows our mission statement in the Book of Discipline, we say, “Local churches provide the most significant arena through which disciple-making occurs” (P. 120, italics added).

Imagine if we really allowed this priority on Christ’s mission through congregations to direct us in our alignment of resources, personnel, and energy in every district, conference, and general agency of the church. Imagine bishops and superintendents and conference staff and lay leaders and pastors viewing Christ’s mission through congregations as job one. Imagine if reaching the poor, the vulnerable, the hurting, and the lonely with ministries driven by the grace of God focused our energies. Imagine fostering congregational leadership and spiritual depth and invitational culture and courageous witness in every community of faith. Imagine how God could use our churches all the more to change lives, foster communities in Christ, and relieve suffering if we really behaved as if local churches provide the most significant arena through which we make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Imagine!

4 CLUMC MESSENGER ENDOWMENT FUND

PERMANENT ENDOWMENT FUND

“Each of you should use whatever gift

you have received to serve others, as

faithful stewards of God’s grace in its

various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10

ARE YOU CONSIDERING INCLUDING

THE CHURCH IN YOUR ESTATE PLAN? WHAT IS THE ENDOWMENT

The Word of God is clear in its encouragement to

us to engage in the ministry of service to others,

using the gifts that we have been given. The

Permanent Endowment Fund at Canyon Lake

United Methodist Church exists to accept

financial gifts from members and friends of the

congregation and to provide a perpetual source of

revenue to support the broad array of ministries of

the church.

This brochure offers insights into the ways you can

participate through your gifts to the

Endowment Fund.

The Endowment Fund provides donors an

opportunity to:

• Make permanent gifts using lifetime assets.

• Provide ongoing support for a favorite

ministry.

• Leave a legacy that will be appreciated for

generations.

• In some instances, make a gift that provides an

income stream for the donor.

A bequest naming the church as a charitable

beneficiary is a great way to support the

Endowment Fund and establish a lasting

legacy at Canyon Lake United Methodist

Church.

You and your attorney might wish to consider

the following language when drafting your

documents:

“I bequeath to the Permanent Endowment Fund of

the Canyon Lake United Methodist Church of

Canyon Lake, Texas, the sum of $____ (or

___percent of my residual estate) and instruct that

the Endowment Committee administer the gift in

accordance with governing policy.”

For more information, please talk with an

Endowment Committee member or contact the

HELLO UNITED METHODIST WOMEN!!!

An Indian legend from the beginning of their history tells of a great flood that covered the world. It seems that a flock of turkeys lived on a mountain. One day a special bird came to them and told them to gather all the four footed and winged creatures at the top of the mountain. Why?” the turkeys asked. “Because it is going to rain and rain and to cover the world.” said the bird. “Oh, we’d better hurry!” replied the turkeys. The day came and it started to rain. All of the creatures started up the mountain toward the summit. One small turkey was being protected by his older brothers who spread their wings over him. They were bringing up the rear. As they were making the arduous climb Little Brother got tired and started to whine and cry. “Don’t cry Little Brother.” his older brothers said. But he cried all the harder. “We’re almost there. See the four legged creatures under the trees and the winged ones are roosting in the trees.” Little Brother cried all the harder. The rain was coming down hard. Waves were lapping at the mountain sides. Foam from the waves touched the tail feathers of the turkeys and sprayed up onto the four legged and winged creatures. Just as the three turkeys reached the summit the rain stopped, the sun came out, and the waters started to recede. Where the foam touched the tail feathers they turned white and where the flecks of foam touched the other creatures they had spots. To this day the turkey has white on the edge of his tail feathers and some animals have white spots to remind us of the great flood that covered the world. We haven’t had quite that much rain but sometimes it feels like we’ve had enough for awhile. Thursday evening, the 11th, in the cold and rain, we had a great presentation by Mark and Margot Porterfield. They brought albums and photos of their life together. (Mark had brown wavy hair and mustache) Margot hasn’t changed a bit. Love Circle postponed their meeting of Monday the 15th until the 22nd at 10am. Greg Brown’s program on Kairos prison ministry was scheduled for that time. Next Month the Hope Circle will meet on November 8th . Canine Classmates will be there to talk to us. Love Circle will meet on Monday the 19th. Ashley Pelrek, a memory care advisor, will speak at that meeting.

CLUMC Christmas Choirs Looking for Singers and Ringers

CHRISTMAS MUSICAL OPPORTUNITIES AT CLUMC:

It may seem early to talk about Christmas in August, but our choirs are beginning preparations for our

Christmas Musical. "Sing Noel: Christ Is Born" is the title of the musical. It will feather interwoven parts

for our Sanctuary Choir, Handbell Choir, Newly-Formed Children's choir and a Musical Drama woven

together to celebrate the newborn King. "Sing Noel: Christ Is Born" will be presented on December

16th. If you would like to get involved, here are some musical opportunities:

Children's Choir:

We would love to have your kids or grandkids participate in the Children's Christmas Choir. We rehearse in

the choir room from 9:45 to 10:10 a.m. on Sunday mornings. The children will sing some traditional carols

and some new Christmas songs. And there will be a special Christmas Pageant for children ages 4-12.

Handbell Choir:

We started rehearsing for Handbell choir this past week. We have space for a couple of new ringers.

Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. We will have some training for new ringers in the

next couple of weeks, so it is a good time to join, even if you have not played bells before.

Sanctuary Christmas Choir:

The Sanctuary Choir is a regular blessing in our Traditional Service. If you would like to sing with us for the

next few months as we prepare for Christmas, we would love to have you. The Sanctuary Choir meets

from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the Choir Room. You will find the choir a warm, friendly group. Please come by on

Wednesday night and we will get you set up.

Please see Joe Batchelor, CLUMC Choir Director, if you have any questions about the above opportunities.
