November 13, 2017 To: Abigail Tilton, Dean of Arts and Sciences TWU Curriculum Committee Members From: Genevieve West, Chair of ESFL Re: Revisions to Graduate Curriculum ESFL is streamlining the graduate curriculum that supports the MA in English and the PhD in Rhetoric. Our graduate curriculum has remained unchanged for at least a decade. Further, we have more courses on the rotation than we have faculty or students to support. The inevitable consequence is that we do not, cannot, offer all of the courses on our graduate rotation. Further the courses no longer reflect either our faculty interests/strengths or the current state of the profession. We are then deactivating a number of courses with narrow topics/titles and creating number of new courses with broader/generic topics that will run more often and allow more faculty to teach them—and teach in their areas of expertise. In addition, by reducing the number of courses, we can actually offer the classes on our rotation on a predictable basis. We are deactivating the following courses: • ENG 5033 Chaucer • ENG 5123 Medieval Drama • ENG 5143 Drama of the Restoration and 18th Century • ENG 5153 Studies in 20th Century American and British • ENG 5213 Studies in the English Renaissance • ENG 5223 Studies in 17th Century Poetry and Prose • ENG 5233 Studies in the Literature of the 18th Century • ENG 5243 Studies in the Romantic Period • ENG 5253 Studies in the Victorian Period • ENG 5273 Studies in Fiction • ENG 5333 Studies in the Writing in Networked Environments • ENG 5373 Professional and Academic Communication • ENG 5393 Women and American Literature • ENG 5713 Old and Middle English Language and Literature • ENG 6123 Milton • ENG 6733 Studies in the Profession of Rhetoric and Composition We are adding the following courses: • Studies in British Literature before 1760 ENG 5403 • Studies in British Literature after 1760 ENG 5413 • Studies in World Literature ENG 5113 • Studies in Writing and Rhetoric ENG 6403 • Studies in Women’s Literature ENG 5393 (with revised title/description) • Genre Studies ENG 5433 • Studies in Literature by Women ENG 5493 • Studies in Literary Theory¬ ENG 5483
With these new course titles, we can better serve our students, allow more faculty members to teach each course number, and better adhere to a published rotation.

Scott Martin (smartin4) (11/29/17 4:21 pm): Graduate level courses would typically includeaction verbs from the highest levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy - level 6. Most SLOs are currently writtenat the undergraduate level. Additionally several SLOs are missing the "Criterion/criteria" (defines theminimum acceptable level of performance). The focus is on the expected “quality of performance”.The criterion/criteria can be specific or qualitative (using generic quality indicators of performancesuch as, critically, accurately, appropriately, concisely, etc.)Scott Martin (smartin4) (11/29/17 4:21 pm): No course noted for deactivation, justification needsto include how AC will fit the additional workload of a new course into the limited teachingresources of AC.Scott Martin (smartin4) (11/29/17 4:29 pm): Graduate level courses would typically includeaction verbs from the highest levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy - level 6. Justification forAddition orChange:
We are reorganizing and simplifying our inventory of courses for our PhD in Rhetoric. This topics course will enable us to cover a wide range of topics under one course number that can rotate among faculty. This course would also support students on the literature track of our MA program. It is part of a larger curricular change that moves us to a "studies in" model.

Terry Senne (tsenne) (11/06/17 1:57 pm): I recommend avoiding the use of "communicate" in the course
SLOs. Many of the SLOs are vague and do not clearly depict what the student will be able to do at the end of
the course. Also avoid use of "demonstrate" as a verb. Use the Guidelines for Well-written SLOs, and revise
the course SLOs accordingly so that SLOs are specific and measurable.
Terry Senne (tsenne) (11/06/17 1:59 pm): Recommend rewriting all course SLOs, They are vague and often
are not measurable as written. Additionally, some lack context and/or criterion. Use the Guidelines for Well-
written SLOs and revise accordingly.

Terry Senne (tsenne) (11/06/17 2:06 pm): Refer to course all SLO comments and my course review
comments found in SPAN 2033 course proposal, which basically has the same SLOs except for SLOs 1 and
5. Revise SLOs using the Guidelines for Well-written SLOs. Be sure that course SLOs for SPAN 2043 are
more rigorous that SPAN 2033.
Jennifer Martin (jmartin) (01/02/18 4:12 pm): Added "Continuation of SPAN 2033 with progressively more

Scott Martin (smartin4) (10/05/17 1:04 pm): If the description indicates "Continuation of Span3173." Is this a prerequisite as well? How many practicum hours for the student - add range todescription.Jennifer Martin (jmartin) (12/06/17 4:56 pm): How many practicum, hours a week (range is ok)?Terry Senne (tsenne) (12/19/17 1:46 pm): Is there a reason that the Spanish language is notaddressed in the course SLOs? Verbs selected for SLOs are questionable without context andadditional information. Clarification of SLOs is needed. SLOs 2 and 3 need a generic indicator ofexpected quality of performance (criterion) as well.

Jennifer Martin (jmartin) (12/05/17 10:44 am): Please include in course description: 1) a shortdescription of course content (Descriptions should be as concise as possible. The most frequentproblem requiring revision of course descriptions is a description which is too long and wordy.Avoid using complete sentences. List the topics covered briefly.); 2) if applicable, prerequisites (Listboth enforced and non-enforced registration prerequisites. If the course is one of a series, theprerequisite courses should be listed in the subsequent course descriptions.); 3) if applicable, co-requisites (List both enforced and non-enforced registration co-requisites.); 4) if applicable, “maybe repeated" (If there is a limit on the number of times a course can be repeated for additionalcredit, specify that number in the course description.); 5) lecture, seminar, lab, practicum, clinical,or private lesson hours a week (“Lecture hours a week” may seem unusual for internet courses;however, for state data reporting, class time is either lecture or lab; therefore, a three-hour internetcourse usually has “Three lecture hours a week.”); 6) number of semester credit hours.Scott Martin (smartin4) (01/21/18 6:25 pm): Revised course description to match similarinternship description formatting.

Justification forAddition orChange:
The proposed change in the descriptions of two of the courses in our department’s three-course history of rhetoric sequence will move discussions and readings of Enlightenment rhetoric from ENG 6223 (History of Rhetoric III) to ENG 6213 (History of Rhetoric II). In the last fifty years, especially, the discipline of rhetoric has expanded greatly: new trends and developments in those years, continuing today, make the inclusion in 6223 (History of Rhetoric III) of the important Enlightenment rhetorics impracticable. This proposed change will a) allow the rhetorics of the Enlightenment to receive greater attention as part of ENG 6213 and b) permit graduate students to spend more time focusing on rhetorics of the classical and contemporary eras, from which many of them draw their theoretical frameworks for their dissertations.
