Dear Friends of the LRSEF, All students at Lisbon Regional School appreciate the support of the Education Foundation. Funds that are raised are used to support innovative activities that might not be available through the regular school budget. One grant the Foundation will fund is a sixth to twelfth grade assembly. The PEERS Foundation’s “Reality Check” Vaping Awareness & Nicotine Prevention Game Show will bring an exciting yet informative, hands-on event in a game show format to our school. The event aims to raise awareness about the rise in smoking e-cigarettes such as JUUL, while giving our students the tools and knowledge to avoid falling victim to this national epidemic. Grants will also fund an assembly, by PSU TIGER program, for the elementary students to address social emotional needs and character building. Last year, Plymouth State University’s TIGER program did a fantastic bullying presentation. Thank you for your continued generous donations to the Lisbon Regional School Education Foundation. Through your support we are able to provide opportunities for enrichment for all of the students in the school. Covid-19 continues to change the world in which we live and it has had a big impact on the delivery of education to our students while placing an enormous challenge on our administration and staff. However, the administration and staff have done a great job of providing an excellent education to the students, even though there are many restrictions in place. The LRSEF Board has also felt the impact of the pandemic. Since last March, school assemblies and field trips have not been allowed due to group size restrictions and the need for remote learning. Therefore, the LRSEF grants issued this year only totaled $10,561, which is down considerably from the typical total of $20,000. Last year, we issued a challenge to increase money raised from the annual appeal to $28,000 and the donor list by 50. We are pleased to report that despite the volatile market of early 2020 and uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, donations totaled $27,159 or 97% of the goal. That is a fantastic achievement during this trying time. Our goal of 50 new donors was a real stretch, however, we concluded the year with 133 donors or 10 more than the year before. For the 2020-2021 fundraising campaign we are setting a goal of $30,000 in donations from 160 donors! This will enable us to fulfill additional grants that we are encouraging the administration and staff to present. The overall winners will be the students at Lisbon Regional School. The Board has had three members resign recently. We thank Bob Butson, Ann Clement, and Sylvie Locke for serving. All three were valuable members and will be missed. I must point out that Bob was one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Foundation. We all owe him a big thank you. What a great organization he helped form almost 20 years ago! It is exciting to welcome two new members to the Board of Trustees, John Northrop, Class of ’79, and Mike White, Class of ’07. We are pleased to have them bring new ideas and energies to help the Foundation to grow for the benefit of our students for years to come. On behalf of the LRSEF, I would like to thank all the donors for their continued support of this extremely valuable program for the students at Lisbon Regional School. John Fitzgerald

From the Chairperson

This has been a very difficult year for everyone.

That is a fantastic achievement during this trying time. Our goal of 50 new donors was a real stretch, however, we concluded the year with 133 donors or 10 more than the year before.

The Board has had three members resign recently. We thank Bob Butson, Ann Clement, and Sylvie Locke for serving. All three were valuable members and will be missed. Mystic Aquarium Exploration

Lisbon Regional School’s CHAT (Children Helping Animals Together) Club has learned a great deal through experiential learning and participating in various humane orientated activities. The Mystic Aquarium field trip has become an exciting capstone experience for them! When visiting and working with the Mystic Aquarium educational staff, the students took part in unique hands-on classrooms (Researcher for a Day Program and Encounters). These experiences have included:

Feeding, and interacting with penguins, stingrays, beluga whales, and seals

Collecting horseshoe crab eggs along the shoreline at Barn Island Wildlife Management Area in Stonington, CT.

Identifying live horseshoe crab eggs using a microscope.

Collecting live eggs for a rearing project with Mystic Aquarium and Stonington High School in CT.

Collecting and donating various items to the Marine Animal Rescue Team.

Touring the Marine Animal Hospital and learning about various careers at the aquarium.

Analyzing and calculating the nutritional needs for some marine animals using mathematical formulas, blenders, scales, and dehydration equipment.

CHAT Club students have made positive differences in the lives of many families and animals in need, all the while learning about animal science and humane education. A BIG THANK YOU to the Education Foundation for supporting the students and giving them the opportunity to participate in unique and fun learning experiences like the Mystic Aquarium trip!!

Visit to the Birthplace of America

In the fall of 2019, LRS Anatomy students traveled to Philadelphia on Amtrak and stayed at a youth hostel in the historic part of the city. They visited the Franklin Institute, one of the country’s preeminent science museums where the heart and brain exhibits are located. The museum is a renowned leader in science and technology. At the Mutter Museum, there were a huge variety of anatomical exhibits, including the recently unveiled skeleton of Carol Orzel, a Philadelphia resident whose final wish was to have her skeleton be permanently displayed as an educational exhibit in her city. The Anatomy students prepared for this by learning about Ms. Orzel and her rare disease in class. They also visited One Liberty observation deck, the Liberty Bell and took a walking tour of the historical district.

On Sunday, a double-decker bus gave the students a tour of the city and then visited Eastern State Penitentiary, a National Historic Landmark. From there they went to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Zoo where they enjoyed its excellent educational exhibits.

Thank you, donors of the Foundation, for your support of this trip. It is such a joy to watch LRS students have this experience; for some, it was their first train trip, their first subway ride, or the first time traveling without their parents. For all, it’s their first time confronting certain aspects of being human – seeing real human remains at the Mutter, working through the physical and mental puzzles at the Franklin Institute, seeing what a penitentiary cell looks like from the inside, and walking where so many famous people they learned about in school actually lived, worked, and conceived of an idea we call America.

Alumni Reunion

The Lisbon High School Alumni Reunion is scheduled for June 19, 2021. We had a fabulous weekend planned for 2020 but due to COVID-19, our plans went down the river. We are hoping to set up a similar weekend in 2021 starting on Friday the 18th.

The Reunion Committee has planned an evening dinner at the Elks Club in Littleton. A dance will follow with music by the Still Kickin' Band. Other activities planned during the day include school tours and memorabilia displays, an architectural search of Lisbon, Lyman, and Landaff, and more. A golf scramble at Blackmount Country Club is scheduled for Sunday, June 20th.

After a long year of social distancing, we hope you will be here to reconnect with your high school friends. Mark your calendar for June!

We look forward to seeing you! Judy Robinson Boulet, Chairman

Q&A’s ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

What is the Lisbon Regional School Education Foundation? The Foundation is a New Hampshire voluntary non-profit corporation organized in 2000 and qualifies as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization under the Internal Revenue Code. What is the Foundation’s purpose? The purpose of the Foundation is to support and enhance the educational experience of students at Lisbon Regional School by raising and providing financial support for school-related groups and programs. The Trustees believe that the Foundation, working independently and cooperatively with the School District, is bringing new and exciting educational experiences to the students it serves. Who is involved in the work of the Foundation? The Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees who are primarily alumni of Lisbon Regional School as well as other interested members of the community. Board members are elected by the Board for three-year terms, plus there are two non-voting members designated by the School Board who sit on the Board along with the Principal of the School (also non-voting). Other interested persons can also participate in the Foundation’s work. How does the Foundation decide what programs and activities it should support? At least three times each school year, teachers, students and other members of the community are invited to apply to the Foundation for grants to fund, in whole or part, a broad range of educational opportunities for Lisbon students. The Foundation’s Trustees then award grants based on which proposals in their opinion will most benefit the educational development of students. In addition, the Foundation actively seeks funding for specific programs that will enhance the educational experiences at Lisbon Regional School.
