November 2019 As we approach the holidays we find ourselves being invited to a multitude of events. Be it a Thanksgiving or Christmas get together, a cookie exchange, a sing-a- long, or potluck event. It is always important to remember to show proper etiquette when attending an event. We all can use a reminder now and again. The Emily Post Institute lists the following, “Six Ways to Be a Good Guest” 1. Tell your host whether you’re attending. And do it immediately. If you delay your reply, you could hinder the host’s planning and also make it seem as if you’re waiting for something better to come along. Even if no RSVP has been requested, it’s thoughtful to thank your host for the invitation and let them know if you can be there or not. 2. Be on time. Punctuality means different things to people in different locales. In general guests should arrive at or shortly after (fifteen minutes or less) the time stated on the invitation. Do not however, arrive early. If you will be seriously late, call your host with an ETA so they won’t worry. 3. Be a willing participant. When your host says that it’s time for dinner, go straight to the table. If you’re asked to participate in a party game or view “Susie’s graduation pictures”, accept graciously and enthusiastically no matter how you really feel. 4. Offer to help when you can. If you’re visiting with the host in the kitchen as they prepare the food, be specific when you offer to help: “I’d be happy to prep the salad or fill the water glasses.” Even if your offer is refused, your gesture will be appreciated. When the party’s end draws nigh, you could also offer to help with the cleanup. 5. Don’t overindulge. Attacking finger foods as if you haven’t eaten in a week will not only attract the wrong kind of attention, it will also leave less food for other guests. Moderation is the name of the game. 6. Thank your host twice. Always thank your hosts enthusiastically when you say your good-byes. A second thank you by phone the day after the party is also a gracious gesture. If the party was formal or given in your honor, written thanks are in order. In fact, a written note is always appreciated – even after casual parties. We always invite you to be our guests at Senior Center events and events held by Senior Services of Wichita. We ask that you be a courteous guest, and show respect to those hosting the event, and those around you. Please refrain from arriving at events a great deal of time prior to their start. Fifteen minutes before is generally enough time, unless you have been requested to arrive earlier. We will ensure you have room at the table and can participate in all activities. Arriving too early can cause issues with set up and there may not be holding space to accommodate too many persons before the event begins. We hope to see you at many upcoming events to share in fellowship, food, and fun. Am I A Good Guest?

Have A Little Time To Spare? Have a little time to spare? Meals on Wheels is in need of active volunteers to help deliver hot meals to isolated and homebound seniors. Many of our regular, long-term volunteers are still vacationing or will prepare to travel during the winter and holiday seasons. Substitute volunteer drivers are desperately needed. Delivery takes approximately one hour to one hour and a halfMonday – Friday starting at 10:00am through the lunch hour. Volunteers are needed on any given weekday. Wednesdays have a solid volunteer pool while Thursdays and Fridays remain the shortest volunteer count. If you or a loved one can help, PLEASE CALL 267-0122 today.

This year the Senior Employment Program held their Fall Job Fair on Tuesday, September 17th at the Downtown Senior Center. Several job seekers attended the fair in hopes of seeking employment.

Dear Friends, November is a wonderful season, a time of thankfulness and giving. Todd Stocker says, “Thankfulness creates gratitude, which generates contentment that causes peace.” I know I always need a little “peace” in my life---what about you!?! This month we are having our annual “Chicken Noodle Dinner aka Thankfulness Celebration”. November is also a month in which we celebrate National Memoir Writing Month, and National Novel Writing Month, so we also are having a few guest speakers that “CELEBRATE LIFE & Writing”! So you will want to find out about some fun ways to celebrate memories and make memories with your children. Also this month brings national Raisin Bran Cereal Day, so breakfast is on us Come snuggle in for some fun! ~Cherise & CO

Hello Everyone…Happy November!!! They say November is the month to show Gratitude. Well, I am still trying to figure out who they is…If any of you figure it out please let me know, because I have a few things I need to discuss with them…Just Kidding! Personally, I think we should show gratitude daily…because tomorrow is not promised to anyone. This month we will have two special events that will help us get in the spirit of Gratitude. Monday, November 11th we will have a Veterans Day Appreciation to show our Veterans how grateful and appreciative we are of them. Stop by the center to join in on the game “Guess the Veteran’s” to have a chance to win a gift card. All those who guess the veterans will have their name placed in our jar. The winning name will be pulled at our Veterans Day Appreciation Monday, November 11th. Also, this month we will have our Thanksgiving Dinner. This is another opportunity to fellowship with members and let them know how grateful you are to have them in your life. As always, if you have questions, comments or concerns, feel free to stop by the office or call. Remember this is your center and we are here to help you enjoy life to the fullest. Be Encouraged, Carnesha Tucker, Center Director

Finding Comfort Support GroupThis grief support group meets monthly on the 3rd Wednesday at 10:30am. Many talk of the 5 stages of grief as something we go through when coping with the death of a loved one. Grief; however, is more like a roller coaster with ups and downs coming in waves and cycles. As you journey through your grief consider coming to the group. It is led by a grief counselor from Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.

Orchard Park Senior Center Greetings Everyone!! Wow! This year has flown by. Winter is upon us. Since we will be experiencing a change in weather soon, I would like to share some safety tips for seniors.• Avoid Slipping on Ice – While younger people often recover relatively quickly from injuries, older adults face complications. Injuries are the leading cause of death in adults over the age of 65.• Dress for Warmth – Cold temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia, more than half of hypothermia-related deaths were of people over the age of 65, so, don’t let indoor temperatures go too low, and dress in layers when going outside. Wear warm socks, a heavy coat, a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. In very cold temperatures, cover all exposed skin. Use a scarf to cover your mouth and protect your lungs. Your body temperature should never dip below 95 degrees.• Fight Wintertime Depression – Because it can be difficult and dangerous to get around, many seniors have less contact with others during cold months. This can breed feelings of loneliness and isolation. To help avoid this, a short daily phone call can make a big difference. Seniors can also arrange a check-in system with neighbors and friends, where they look in on one another daily.

• Check the Car – Driving during the winter can be hazardous for anyone. But it is especially dangerous for older people, who may not drive as often anymore or whose reflexes may not be as quick as they once were. Get your car serviced before wintertime hits, checking things like the oil, tires, battery and wipers. • Prepare for Power Outages – winter storms can lead to power outages. Make sure you have easy access to flashlights and a battery powered radio in case the power goes out. Stockpile warm blankets. Longer power outages can spoil the food in your refrigerator and freezer, so keep a supply of non-perishable foods that can be eaten cold, on hand. If the power goes out, wear several layers of clothing, including a hat. Move around a lot to raise your body temperature.• Eat a Varied Diet – Because people spend more time indoors and may eat a smaller variety of foods, nutritional defects can be a problem. It is recommended that you consume foods that are fortified with Vitamin D, grains, and seafood.• Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning – Using a fireplace, gas heater, or lanterns can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Ensure your safety by checking the batteries on your carbon monoxide detector and buying an updated one if you need to.

The most important tip to keep in mind during the colder months is to ask for help. If you need to clear your property of snow and ice, don’t hesitate to ask a family member or neighbor, or hire a professional. Arrange rides to the grocery store and doctor’s appointments. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Wintertime

certainly poses challenges for seniors, but with a bit of planning and awareness, you will stay healthy and experience the joys of springtime soon. Information taken from: Care.com Diane Nutt, Center Director

Beware of Growing Medicare Scam: “Free Genetic Testing” Over the past few years, DNA tests have become popular across the country. Unfortunately, there are individuals taking advantage of Medicare beneficiaries. Scammers are often targeting Medicare beneficiaries through telemarketing calls, booths at public events, health fairs, and door-to-door visits. They offer “free” genetic testing to help recipients avoid diseases or find the right medications. They claim the testing is covered by Medicare and will be free. Medicare only covers genetic testing in limited situations, and only when ordered by the beneficiary’s physician. If a company bills Medicare for genetic testing, and Medicare denies the claim, the beneficiary could be responsible for the entire cost of the test – which often totals around

$10,000.• Do not accept genetic testing services, including a cheek swab, from someone at a community event, a local fair, a farmer’s market, a parking lot, or any other large event.• Always be cautious about giving out your personal information, including your Medicare number.• Always review your Medicare Summary Notice or Explanation of Benefits. The words “gene analysis” or “molecular pathology” may indicate questionable genetic testing.

Contact your local Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) if you have concerns about possible fraud or billing errors. To find your local SMP visit: smpresource.org or call 1-877-808-2468. (ACL –Administration for Community Living News & Events 09/24/2019)
