Exalted Rulers Message:
The secret is out: our Lodge runs on
volunteers. Yes, we have a few part-time
employees such as the bartenders (who are
also members), a cook, a custodian and
kitchen help. Two of our elected officers, the
Secretary and Treasurer, receive a minimum
wage limited to 20 hours a week...far less than
what they typically work. Everyone else is a
volunteer.
Each week our House Committee asks for volunteers to staff recurring jobs
such as buffet servers, check-in, 50-50 sales, etc. using a system called
Sign-Up Genius. We also ask for volunteers for one-time events informally
and with the Lodge Lowdown and eBlasts. Quite often, we don't get the
response we need and a few of the "regulars" fill in.
Here's a short vignette about volunteering that you may find amusing. It's
about four members at a typical Elks Lodge: Everybody, Somebody,
Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done at the Lodge
and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would
do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got upset
about that because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody
could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it. It ended
up that Everybody blamed Somebody when, actually Nobody asked
Anybody.
I'm asking that you find some way to lend your talents to the Lodge.
When you see Vero Beach Elks Lodge 1774 <[email protected]> on
your email, please take the time to open it up and press the button that says
Sign Up. This will take you to our Elks page where we have listed all the
events and jobs in which we need volunteers for the coming 10 days. We
send it out every Tuesday for the following time period. In the beginning
there is an explanation of what each job entails. Below that you will see the
date, the event and what jobs at that event need to be filled. All you have
to do is check the one you want to help with and press Submit and it will
automatically sign you up. It will also send out a reminder two days before
the event.
Without volunteers, these events would not be possible. Everyone seems
to enjoy going to them. So why not volunteer an hour or two of your time
when you're planning on going anyway? So next time you see a Sign-Up
Genius email, please check out where you can be of service.

Upcoming holidays and events require prep work
Is there any better time to be an Elk than the holiday season?
November is the month when we enjoy special moments with friends
and family and some of our most important Elks events. November is
also a month for preparation. While we enjoy Veterans Day and
Thanksgiving, we should also start laying the groundwork for next
year’s Lodge activities. Does your Lodge use a monthly planning
book? Do you have a five-year planning book? Both short- and long-
term planning ensure that our programs remain polished and empower
incoming officers to get the most out of their tenure. First and
foremost, November is a time to plan for your Lodge’s Veterans Day
event. Properly honoring our veterans’ sacrifice requires preparation
and organization. What better way to commemorate Veterans Day
than with a well-planned program that expresses heartfelt gratitude to
your local veterans? Thanksgiving is also right around the corner. To
commemorate one of our most cherished American holidays, many
Elks Lodges open their doors to the community for special dinners.
This makes it possible for all visitors to enjoy a satisfying meal
regardless of their situation. It’s also one of the finest ways for us to
share our many blessings with those who may not be as fortunate. This
year, the Elks Memorial Service is on December 2. Now is the time
to start planning for this important ceremony by inviting family and
friends of deceased Members to the event. Preparation will ensure that
every participating officer understands the solemnity of this occasion,
allowing them to publicly demonstrate that Elks are “never forgotten,
never forsaken.” The holiday season also means that a new year is
swiftly approaching. Are your officers lined up for next year?
February nominations are coming soon, so don’t wait until the last
minute to find Members who are dedicated to filling these roles with
pride. Now is also the time to finalize your selections for Elk, Officer,
and Citizen of the Year Awards. Just as we celebrate our veterans, we
should celebrate the efforts of our exemplary Members.
Acknowledging their efforts is one of the finest ways to show
appreciation for the hard work of your fellow Elks. Plan to give out
these awards at a special event where Members and non-Members
alike can see the many rewards of being an Elk. Arranging these
events is easier when you maintain a detailed planning manual. As
officers move through the chairs and enter into new roles, they will
have the collective knowledge of countless past Elks at their disposal.
This is yet another way that the officers in your Lodge prove that
they’re “Working Together to Make a Difference.”
Submitted by Tex McClurken
On battlefields of long ago and today, America’s
military and veterans made sacrifices for all of us.
Through their service, their pride, and their patriotism,
the men and women of our armed forces made our
nation what it is today. They defended our freedoms.
They fought for justice. They preserved our
ideals. Through it all, they forged our character. They
are our real heroes. Indeed, our nation was built, and
continues to be built by their actions.
Since 1917, the Benevolent and Protective Order of
Elks has demonstrated its compassion for the veterans
of our armed forces through numerous programs and
activities. Since 1946, the order has maintained the
pledge, “So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent
and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.”
Each November, the Elks observe National Veterans
Remembrance Month. We ask everyone in our
communities throughout Florida to join the Elks as we
thank our veterans. Let’s all do our part to remember
these men and women.
God bless our veterans, God bless the men and women
serving in our military and their families, and God bless
America.
Congratulations to Lynn Bergeron
