Not Just a Salon: Glass Door Salon & Spa Settles into Downtown Winston-Salem By Sara E. Butner

Downtown Winston-Salem’s only full service salon and spa celebrated the first anniversary of its opening in October. In just one year, Glass Door Salon and Spa has tripled its business – and that’s thanks to excellent customer service and affordably decadent packages, says owner Erin Blakley. “What sets us apart from other salons is that we’re a family,” she says. “We work as a team. I’m very proud of that. We’re like a well-oiled machine, with all the components working together.”When a customer visits Glass Door – located on the first floor of the Embassy Suites hotel at 460 North Cherry Street – the first thing he or she notices is the salon’s sleek,

modern atmosphere. The “glass door” of the salon’s title looks out onto Winston-Salem’s busy Cherry Street corridor. Inside, the concrete floor, dove-gray walls and corrugated metal accents create an industrial vibe that still manages to soothe. It’s an oasis, but one clearly one in touch with its urban setting. The Glass Door staff work hard to welcome clients not just to the salon, but to downtown as well. They chat with

clients about new stores or restaurants to try. The salon offers complimentary valet parking through the hotel, and Blakley reminds that on-street parking is free on nights and weekends. Blakley serves on the board of the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership, where she is helping develop a “buy local” campaign. “What’s important to us is not just building our business, but building downtown. If downtown doesn’t do well, we don’t do well. We’re in a really cool space. It’s important to keep people coming downtown and getting involved in the community,” Blakley says. And Glass Door has indeed done very well in its first year. Since opening last October, the salon has seen its business triple. Glass Door provides clients a range of services including hair, makeup, nails, massages, bod wraps, facials and even bridal services

for the entire wedding party. The customizable spa packages for women and for men make excellent gifts, and are a great way to indulge while saving money. For instance, the Glass Door Escape Package includes a 60-minute Swedish massage, body wrap, European facial, manicure, pedicure, shampoo with blowout and a lunch with wine for only $250 – about a 20 percent discount off the “a la carte” prices for those services. The spa packages for men start at only $40, and can include a local craft beer selection. Blakley and her staff are also devoted

to community service. The salon regularly provides haircuts to men at Samaritan Ministries homeless shelter, donates styling and make-up services to the AIDS Care Service Red Ribbon Fashion Show, and donates styling and makeup services for fundraisers with Wake Forest University’s Philanthropic Association.“I like to give back, and I want my staff to give back, because a lot of people don’t have the opportunity to do what we do. It’s important to give back to the community

because this community makes it possible for us to do what we do,” she says. “We’re not just a salon. We’re a group of ladies and one guy who want to succeed – not just in our business, but all of downtown.”

Spice Cantina120 Barnhardt StGreensboro, NC(336) 283-8660www.edgeflats.com

Spice Cantina is the newest addition to The Railyard complex in Downtown Greensboro, located at 120 Barnhardt Street right next to The WORX restaurant. This 5800 square foot restaurant (130 seats) will provide a Mexican dining experience unique to the Triad. While our Chef hails from Central Mexico and will bring a level of authenticity to the menu items, we will also focus on dishes which will celebrate the heritage of other parts of the United States from Texas to California, with a large focus on providing a fresh dining experience with meats smoked and juices squeezed on a daily basis.Spice Cantina is intended as a place for community, a place where friends, families, and colleagues can gather to network, celebrate, and enjoy. Whether relaxing on a couch in our vintage lounge area for one of our wonderful margaritas or sangrias, gathering for dinner with large groups at our counter top height community tables in the middle of the dining room, or “hanging out” on our 2500 square foot patio (110 additional seats), our patrons will enjoy a comfortable and unique dining experience.

The two buildings in which Spice will delight have a very unique history. The restaurant building initially constructed in the early 1900’s was home to an Ice & Coal House during the years, and the kitchen building constructed in the 1950’s was initially a Chicken Hatchery & Feed Company. We are

excited to have preserved these buildings and combined them into a single building which we hope will entertain for many years!!
