In addition to the gardens and art of Reynolda Village, the shops and restaurants undoubtedly add to its eclectic charm in an area with a lot of local history. Functioning as more than your typical spot to grab lunch or dinner while shopping, both Silo and Crown & Cork fill multi-functional niches in the village.Serving fine wine and craft beer, Silo is a pet-friendly establishment that serves as a consistent Buena Vista and Wake Forest University destination. The bar features seating for 40 outside, with an additional 45 seats inside. Patrons often enjoy the open patio area in the summer months especially when live acoustic music plays.Silo also features an ongoing rainy day special, Monday through Thursday. If it’s

raining out that day, you can enjoy half off all wines by inside or under the covered patio.The venue also functions as a healthy alternative to your typical deli, offering a variety of sandwiches and cheeses to enjoy with your beverage of choice. Reynolda Village: Shop, Dine, Exploreby Brian WatkinsWith its rich heritage, scenic location, and 30 unique shops and restaurants, Reynolda Village is a Winston-Salem experience to be savored. Visitors can enjoy shopping and dining, while strolling through beautifully landscaped grounds. And there is more to Reynolda Village. Reynolda Gardens and Reynolda House Museum of American Art combine with Reynolda Village to make up the Reynolda Historic District experience. Created by R.J. and Katharine Reynolds in the early 20th century as a part of their 1,067 acre estate, Reynolda Village was a progressive, self-sustaining farm and community. Today the former farm buildings house an exciting array of shops and

restaurants which offer something for everyone---Ladies, Men’s and Children’s apparel, home furnishings and linens, gourmet delights, craft beer and wine, locally made foods, a pet boutique, vintage music and movie memorabilia, a pottery painting studio for all ages, and much, much more. Reynolda Gardens offers year-round

viewing of exotic plants and flowers from across the world. The Gardens’ scenic nature trails are favorites of area runners, pet walkers, bird watchers, and nature lovers. Beautifully wooded, the trails provide splendid views of Reynolda House and Lake Katharine (once a 16 acre lake that has become a wetland wildlife habitat).


Reynolda House, the 60 room bungalow built by R.J. and Katharine Reynolds as their family home, was converted to a museum of American art in 1967. A tour of the house affords visitors an opportunity to view the architectural features and fine furnishings of the historic home while at the same time enjoying the Museum’s renowned collection of American art. There are also many special events and activities to enjoy. Reynolda Village hosts a farmers’ market on Friday mornings in late spring through mid-fall. Reynolda Gardens offers summer camps and a variety of educational opportunities. Reynolda House features major changing exhibitions in the fall and spring, and after-hours programs throughout the year. The museum’s annual Harvest Moon Festival in September and Community Day in the spring are not to be missed.The holiday season is not complete without a visit to Reynolda. The traditional Holiday Stroll kicks off the season in Reynolda Village on the Saturday before Thanksgiving (this year on November 22). This festive annual event includes food, shopping, music, carriage rides, and visits with Santa. Reynolda Gardens is the perfect place to find special holiday plants. And Reynolda House offers holiday themed tours, guided candlelight tours, a holiday pops concert with Carolina Brass, and a presentation of Truman Capote’s play A Christmas Memory. Fun Facts...1. Reynolda Village is located 2 miles north of downtown Winston Salem, on Reynolda Road, adjacent to the Wake Forest University campus.

2. During Katharine Reynolds’ lifetime Reynolda Gardens had nearly 300 varieties of roses and more than 150 varieties of plants.

3. There are two walking trails on the grounds. The Perimeter trails is .75 mile and the Woodland trail is 1.5 miles.

This location enjoys a lot of history as well, having once been Friends of the Earth; the first health food store in the Winston-Salem, then became Village Soda Shop, and then Mayberry’s for a number of years. This sense of history is shared by its sister establishment, Crown & Cork, which is a wine and craft beer retail shop. Both locations provide a great atmosphere with friendly service, and feature local ingredients. Parking is ample near Crown & Cork, so there’s always room for more even during heavier traffic. Open till 9pm on weeknights and later on weekends, they offer a great tapas menu and free live music on the lawn from 8 - 10pm. Plus, patrons can take advantage of retail-priced beer on location at Crown & Cork, which is also a nice perk.Crown & Cork also has the historical distinction of having the first air conditioned room in the area in what was originally a pasteurization room.Owner Chris Barnes has been in the restaurant business for 25 years and was the man behind 6th and Vine. His goal is to offer great service and serve as an alluring venue to revitalize Reynolda Village. Holiday plans include an Oktoberfest celebration each Saturday and Sunday in October, which will feature bratwurst and beers. Late October will also include a pumpkin patch for kids for Halloween. Craft Coffee is also in the works, and both Crown & Cork and Silo will be participating in Reynolda Village’s Holiday Stroll. 6th Annual Greensboro Run/Walk for AutismSaturday, Sept. 27, at UNC-GreensboroFor many Triad families, the annual Greensboro Run/Walk for Autism is a must-do fall event. The proceeds fund much-needed local programs of the Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC). But the Greensboro Run/Walk for Autism is more than a fundraiser; it’s a day to celebrate autism awareness and acceptance. “It’s really good to see other people who don’t have kids with autism come and participate,” says Robin McCraw, a local teacher whose son has autism. The support from runners, walkers, and sponsor companies is truly appreciated, she said. Last year’s race raised a record-breaking $40,000 with more than 400 participants, volunteers, and businesses. In North Carolina, more than 60,000 families are living with autism as 1 in 58 children are diagnosed. In the Triad community, ASNC provides Autism Resource Specialists to guide families through caring for their children throughout their lifespans; training for teachers, medical professionals, and direct-care staff; and direct-care services for individuals with autism in home, work, and community settings.ASNC has been there for McCraw’s son, now 17, and her whole family, since he was diagnosed as a toddler, she said. ASNC started by connecting them to resources, including a parent mentor. “That was really wonderful having someone who had kind of been there.”McCraw said ASNC’s programs and decades of experience in working with individuals with autism makes all the difference for those with autism and their families, and that’s why the Greensboro Run/Walk for Autism is so important. “A lot of these kids and adults have wonderful abilities. They can contribute to society, you just need to give them the right support. Cedar’s Restaurant & Pizzeria6104 W Market StGreensboro, NC336-299-5272Marvin Lizama has been working in the restaurant business for years — 9 years as a manager of Mario’s Pizza on New Garden Rd., and operating Marozzi’s Pizza at the Palladium as a co-owner for 2 years. He eventually parted ways with his partner at Marozzi’s Pizza, and went on to buy Cedar’s Restaurant.

As the new owner, he has his family and co-workers from his days at Mario’s Pizza working with him to build the Cedar’s Restaurant and Pizzeria name. It’s located on W. Market St. just west of Guilford-College Rd. and offers a relaxed dining room. As an

added perk, they also deliver to the local neighborhood and hotels.

When he bought Cedar’s Pizzeria, Lizama added ‘Restaurant and Pizzeria’ to reflect the expanded menu. Items include Gyros, burgers, plus hot Italian Classico specialties from Eggplant Parmigiana, Baked Ziti, to Ravioli, Manicotti, and Lasagna. They pride themselves on using

fresh ingredients. The chicken is cut and breaded fresh each day for the Chicken Tenders, Chicken Wings, and chicken breast for the entrees.


The Technology Center: Addressing the Confusion

People ask our CEO, William “Bill” Brown, why he bothers with blending technology and business. “Why teach core business values and technology under the same roof? That’s a bit incompatible,” they say. Well, not really. Bill Brown has run into the same conclusion throughout his 25

years as an AV/IT consultant: Technology problems are usually the iceberg’s tip in the office. Businesses typically hire Bill’s consulting company, BD Brown Communications, to fix their technology crises only for him to discover the company owns a messy staff, misguided priorities, funky communication, and other bugs. The business industry has cemented technology into its infrastructure. It’s here to stay and grow but comes with a hefty (sometimes long-term) price when thrown into a messy mix. At the Technology Center, we want business to thrive with and apart from technology and have incorporated the Compass Approach. Compass Approach rules: 1) Understand the business structure and 2) Incorporate technology. Many businesses reverse those 2 steps to their detriment. Tanked businesses in the Triad in turn tank the economy and can we really afford that? The answer to that question is ‘no’ and the answer to the Triad’s business needs is the Technology Center, where we encourage businesses to think creatively, analyze their mission, develop sound business (Continue on Pg. 21)

by Teddy Burriss - Networking StrategistIf you can accept “Networking is about meeting new people and developing some level of relationship where you can help each other,” then I would like you consider that networking involves the deliberate acts of Presenting, Connecting, and Engaging.

Let me explain what I mean by these three networking acts, and why they are important to your network and you:

The way you present yourself while networking is much more than the way you look. Yes, appearance is important. We need to make sure we are presentable, clean shirt, combed hair (what we have), fully and appropriately dressed for where we are and what we are doing at the time.

Beyond appearance, proper presentation includes how we approach a new connection, the topics we’ll get into and whether or not we make the discussions predominately about our new connection or not. Presentation includes meeting a new connection with a smile, hand extended to shake, we open the conversation up with enjoyable questions and listen intently to what our new connection has to share, as we continue to make the conversation all about our new connection. We like to get to know and help people who present themselves in a friendly and approachable manner.

Connecting refers to our eagerness to extend the connection beyond the networking event. Often what happens when people are networking is they categorize the new people they meet into groups, such as “Prospect”, “Influencer”, or “No-Value.” They follow up with the ones they categorized as “Prospects”, maybe get back to “Influencers”, and often ignore the “No-Value” contacts. This connection categorization is very

damaging to our network. I agree that our sales funnel needs to have the opportunities categorized. However, our networks of people do not need to be categorized in this manner. We have no idea which of our new connections could be prospects or powerful influencers. Better yet, some of these contacts could become great connection points to other fantastic people who could be fabulous prospects or influencers. For this reason we need to connect after the event with everyone we met there. This could include--but is not limited to-- LinkedIn, Twitter, and Google+.

Engaging is one of the most underused practices of networking. Engaging beyond the networking event starts immediately afterwards--the afternoon for a morning (Continued on Pg 26)


Continued from pg 24 (Networking 106)meeting, or the next morning after an afternoon meeting. Engaging can include a variety of activities. A follow up email message continuing the conversation, or asking for a meeting to continue the discussion. A phone call may be appropriate, depending on the relevance and expectations of our new contact. If possible, view their LinkedIn profile and send a connection request. Engaging can also include helping our new contact with another new connection or information that they may have asked for. Engaging is a vital networking action.

Too often I meet people at networking events who fail to think through these deliberate networking activities. You will absolutely differentiate yourself above and beyond every other networker if you adopt these activities into your networking style.

Proper Presentation, Connection, and Engagement with our growing network will increase relationships and provide the greatest opportunity for our network to think of us first when they or another person they know may need our help, products, or services.
