When you’re heading on a long journey with nothing but a 60L backpack to hold five months’worth of your life, every cubic millimetre of space in that pack seems to count. Among thebulkiest items to pack are towels; however you roll or fold them they take up too much spaceand they take all day to dry, leaving you with a lovely damp patch on whichever items happento be squished up against it in your pack. A travel towel is the perfect solution; smalland super lightweight, these can make a huge difference to your pack and make life so mucheasier when you’re on the road.

After a little research, I opted for an XXL Personal travel towel from PackTowl(http://www.cascadedesigns.com/packtowl). At 59×35 inches, this is as big as a bath towel butit weighs just 10.5 ounzes and folds down to much less than half the size of my normal beach(http://emilyluxton.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/packtowl_personal_group.jpg)towel.Although it’s very soft, the material is so thin that I simply couldn’t believe that it would be ascomfortable as my normal towel – or dry me as much!

But after using it after my shower all this week, Ihave to say there’s almost no difference! The ultra-soft microfibre blend is really comfy on my skin, and the towel – which absorbs up to four times it’sweight in water – dried me almost instantly! It’scertainly not as thick or warm as a fluffy bathtowel, and being so lightweight it’s a little lackingin the cosiness department, but it’s practical andhopefully I won’t be needing a thick, warm towelon the beaches in Brazil! I’ve heard other travellerssay that they have to pat-dry rather than rubthemselves down (my preferred drying method!)with their travel towels, but I was pleased to findthat the PackTowl works brilliantly however it’sused.

Better yet, it works really well when drying my hair. I gently squeezed my(http://emilyluxton.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/20131113-2154341.jpg)just-washed hair using the ultra-absorbentPackTowl and it dried it at least as thoroughly as my normalbath towel, if not a tiny bit more.

The XXL Personal PackTowl is more than enough fabric towrap around me after I’ve showered – plus it’s big enough todouble as a lightweight blanket, a beach towel for sunbathing,or even improvised bunk curtain in a hostel dorm. I loveoversize towels as I like to feel properly wrapped up – I don’twant to accidentally flash anyone between the bathroom andmy dormitory!

But PackTowl (http://www.cascadedesigns.com/packtowl)has a great range of sizes and types, including the even lighterUltralite and Nano options, so you’re bound to find

your perfect travel companion on their site!

The towel is machine washable and can be dried on a line or by machine. There’s a clever littlesnap loop which means you can easily hang the towel up to dry – which it does superquickly, meaning that you can fold it up and stick it back in your bag in time for that earlymorning bus journey without worrying about that nasty wet towel smell!

The Personal PackTowl is fantastic for me because:

It’s super lightweight and folds up teeny-tiny, saving a ton ofspace in my backpack! Even though its 59×35 inches, it folds to about 5×7 inches and is nomore than half an inch thick, plus it weighsjust 10.5 ounces. It’s quick drying – it wrings out almost completely dry and when I hung it up

after showering, my towel was dry before I left for work about 3o minutes later. The Antimicrobial Treatment reduces odour retention, meaning that it’s great for frequentuse – perfect for my five month trip!

I’m not sure how my PackTowl compares to other brands, but I have to say I’m dead impressedwith it! The amount of space and weight it’ll save in my pack is a godsend, but it also worksgreat and doesn’t compromise on comfort or absorbency. I’d definitely recommend it as a long-term travel companion!

PackTowl Original

They Say – The original superabsorbent towel comes in a variety of sizes to meet any fun or utility need. It’s made from a natural, fiber-based fabric that softens with every wash, so it only gets better with age.

10X Rapid-Cycle Absorbency: Soaks up 10 times its weight in water;; then wrings out almost completelydry – over and over. Large size towel can absorb a full liter of water!

Multipurpose: Perfect for everything from campsite to kitchen and workshop use.

Softens with Use: Becomes softer and more absorbent with each washing.

Easy Care: Machine wash, then hang using the convenient snap loop, or tumble dry.

We Say – I used this all summer whilst camping. I would have prefered a larger size than the one I had – Ihad the large, so the XL is for me next time – as by the time it’d got really damp I myself was nevertotally dry (I’m 6ft 2″ though so there’s a fair bit of me to dry). In summer this doesn’t matter but it’s anissue if the moment you walk out the shower block, or the tarn, you’re hit by the cold of autumn.

The towel dries well though. I’d hang it over the line that stretches lengthways inside the tent and comemorning it was ready to use again. Very compact as well. it fits in my wash bag. Not a substitute for areal, heavy towel that’s going to give you a skin massage at the same time as drying you, but it doeswhat it says it does so it’s a nice option if you’re wanting to travel light.
