Commonwealth Honors News & Updates "Orange is the New Black" Author to Speak at End of Five College Social Justice Policy Residency Program The Five College Social Justice Practitionerin Residence program is concluding this week with a powerhouse schedule, including a conversation between resident Tina Reynolds and Piper Kerman, author of Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison. Reynolds is the cofounder and executive director of Women on the Rise Telling HerStory (WORTH), a nonprofit organization in New York City that works with currently and formerly incarcerated women to confront barriers they and their families face during and after prison. Kerman, a Smith College alumna, spent most of 2004 in the Women's Federal Prison Camp in Danbury, Conn., completing time for a drug related money laundering charge. She is now a public relations consultant, working with publicinterest organizations and nonprofits. Kerman and Reynolds will discuss women's rights in America's prison industrial complex and the new Netflix television series based on Kerman's memoir. Merck Grant to Support Next Phase of Wellspring's Growth The Wellspring Collaborative is growing. The Springfield economic development project codirected by CPPA lecturer Fred Rose has received a $45,000 grant from the John Merck Fund to support market research and planning for a cooperatively owned greenhouse business. This will be the collaborative's second business venture; the first, an upholstery shop, will launch within the next several weeks. Based on Cleveland's successful Evergreen Cooperatives, Wellspring aims to establish cooperatively owned businesses in Springfield, strengthening the region's economy by providing city residents with jobs and by selling goods and services to local anchor institutions such as hospitals and universities. CPPA Community Celebrates 15 Years and Looks Ahead More than 100 people gathered last week to celebrate the Center for Public Policy and Administration's 15 th anniversary. State Rep. Ellen Story joined current and former faculty and staff, as well as friends, students and alumni including two graduates from CPPA's original class in marking CPPA's accomplishments to date and looking forward to many more years of innovative teaching, research and service. Students in the Participatory Visual andDigital Research Methods class took awalking tour of Springfield last weekend toexamine how new technologies couldimprove public spaces and services in thecity in the near future. Rep. Richard Nealjoined the tour, which stopped at the Lymanand Merrie Wood Museum of SpringfieldHistory; the Springfield Data Center; the RogerL. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy; Indian Orchard Mills; and theGeek Group of Western Massachusetts. The class, taught by AssociateProfessor Krista Harper (anthropology and public policy) and lecturerGretchen Gano, is part of a national project called Futurescape City Tours,which is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Professional Development Seminar Travels to BostonEarlier this month students met with representativesfrom organizations and government agencies during aday­long professional development trip to Boston andCambridge. Under the guidance of Associate DirectorSatu Zoller, the group visited CPPA alumni ­­ MicheleDesAutels (MPPA/MBA '08) and Kevin Greer(MPPA/MBA '09) ­­ at the U.S. Coast Guard and NewProfit, Inc. The class also had appointments atJumpStart; Gov. Deval Patrick's office; theMassachusetts Department of EnvironmentalProtection; and Mathematica Policy Research.

Badgett Remarks Highlight Two LGBT LandmarksComments from Professor M.V. Lee Badgett(economics) have made national news recently, astwo public policies related to gay rights have markedsignificant milestones. Earlier this month, the U.S.Senate passed the Employment Non­DiscriminationAct, which would make it illegal to discriminate in theworkplace based on sexual orientation. Badgetttestified in favor of the bill last year and wasinterviewed by Inc. after the Senate passed it. Inaddition, Badgett was quoted widely in articlesmarking the 10th anniversary of the Massachusetts Supreme JudicialCourt's ruling to allow same­sex marriage in the state.

Fountain Publishes Report on Cross­Agency Collaborationand Article on Rollout of HealthCare.gov

Professor Jane Fountain (political science and publicpolicy) released a report last month titled "ExaminingConstraints To, and Providing Tools For, Cross­Agency Collaboration," through the AdministrativeConference of the United States, a public­privatepartnership whose goal is to make government workmore efficiently. In addition, Fountain published anarticle for the London School of Economics analyzingthe rollout of the federal health care exchange,HealthCare.gov.

Schweik's Unique Research Combination the Focus of NewFeature ArticleAssociate Professor Charles Schweik (environmentalconservation and public policy) is featured in a newarticle on the UMass Research Next website. Thepiece highlights Schweik's trajectory from computerprogrammer to tenured professor and examines howhe is using his research and field work to try to tacklesome of the world's wicked problems.
