Your Chamber, the U.S. Chamber and elections

This election cycle is drawing to a close, although we will probably see a few more weeks of analysis and guesses

about what it meant and what it will mean as the new Congress begins in January. Suf fice it to say that it was

an odd one. A lot of incumbents got tossed out but a good number held on. The common thread was that races

became less about the talents and skills of a candidate and more about how “bad” the “other” candidate would

be if elected. And beyond the candidate’s campaigns, a large number of outside organizations spent millions andmillions of dollars on campaigns and were called into question because of it.

Part of the questioning was about the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and allegations that it was receiving substantial

foreign funding for its campaign efforts. As the U.S. Chamber itself became the news story, we had a number of

you, our Members, ask about the JACC relationship with the U.S. Chamber.

As background, U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue and Board members made a number of

statements after the 2008 elections about the level of candidate funding that came from unions compared to what business organizations

put into campaigns. The U.S. Chamber made a concerted effort this year to re-elect and elect pro-business candidates. The final reports

are not in, but the U.S. Chamber vowed to raise and spend around $50 million on campaigns in 2010. It is likely the number will be highe

By comparison, according to a Washington Examiner article this past summer, the AFL-CIO and Service Employees International Union

together indicated they would put around $85 million into this election year.

Did the U.S. Chamber get lots of campaign money from foreign sources as alleged? The Chamber does have members that are foreign-

owned. In media interviews as well as a letter to members, Donohue noted this, but also pointed out that membership investments do not into political campaigns. The New York Times ran its own investigation concluding, “There is no evidence that what the Chamber does i

collecting overseas dues is improper or even unusual, according to both liberal and conservative election-law lawyers and campaign finan

documents.”

Whether people agree or disagree with the U.S. Chamber or sources of campaign funding, the articles raised questions with some about th

relationship your Chamber has with the U.S. Chamber. First, and most important, Chambers of Commerce, from the U.S. Chamber to loc

chambers, are separate and independent entities. The JACC is not a subsidiary of nor receives funds from either the U.S. Chamber or Stat

Chamber. We are an independent organization focused on the business interests in our region.

However, like many businesses, the JACC is a member of the U.S. Chamber. We are a member in order to receive updates on legislation

other federal level issues of interest to business. We have also had staff members serve on the U.S. Chamber Small Business committee a

am currently on the Chamber’s Transportation

& Logistics committee. Those committees deal

with public policy issues and we believe it isimportant that our region have a voice in these

policies. There has never been any discussion

of candidates or calls to raise campaign funds

at these committee meetings. The JACC

does not give the U.S. Chamber money for

campaigns.

As your Chamber, we do enter into campaigns

on local policy issues when we think there

is a critical need. In all of them, the Board

must vote on the position your Chamber takes.

Sometimes, we have gone further, raising funds

to support our position. Among those are the

campaigns for the parks/drainage sales taxand the public safety sales tax. When we raise

funds, we use a separate, dedicated continuing

committee which is tasked with supporting that

specific campaign. We never use member dues

investments for those local campaigns.

If you have questions or comments, please feel

free to call me or email me at any time.

A Message rom Dr. C.J. Hu

Dr. C.J. Huff is the Superintendent of  Joplin R-VIII School District

From an economic development perspective, the

future prosperity of Joplin depends heavily on

a highly educated and well-trained workforce.

Certainly the quality of the educational systems

in the region from pre-school through graduate

school play a critical role ensuring the future

growth of our community. The Joplin Board of

Education takes this responsibility seriously.

If you follow the state and national political

scene, education reform is at the top of everyone’s

agenda. The media frenzy around failing schools

in our largest inner city communities in this

nation has painted all schools in our country with

the same brush. This is unfortunate given the

quality of our educators and school leaders in this

area in particular.

I could bore you with the intricacies of No

Child Left Behind (NCLB), Adequate Yearly

Progress (AYP), and the Annual Performance

Report (APR) that is used to measure schoolperformance in a terribly flawed, politically

motivated evaluation system. Instead I would like

to share with you the fact that we have a number

of progressive communities in this region who

have kept education as a top priority long before

education reform, once again, drew national

headlines.

Since my arrival in July 2008, the Board of

Education, myself and key staff members have

been discussing ways to measure our progress on

a continuum and focusing our limited resources

and efforts in high impact areas that have a far

reaching impact on student performance and

success. Although this effort is in its infancy,

tremendous progress has been made towardsachieving our long-range objectives. For example

the Joplin Schools have…

• Reduced the number of dropouts by 54% in

one year.

• Reduced discipline referrals by 49.2% in five

years.

• Increased the graduation rate by 6.7% in two

years.

• Improved attendance rates which are

currently at the highest level in five years.

• Improved math achievement scores 31.6% in

seven years.

• Improved reading/writing scores by 23.4%in seven years.

So what does that mean in terms of the status and

progress of the Joplin Schools over these past few

years?

The Of fice of Social and Economic Data Analysis

(OSEDA) is involved in the ongoing analysis

of growth and development of programs and

services in the State of Missouri. Their data i

and analysis of program effectiveness statew

In terms of schools they measure school distr

success on multiple measures.

When comparing the 523 school districts in tState of Missouri the Joplin Schools rank…

• In the top 6% of all school districts in th

state in terms of progress.

• In the top 19% of all school districts in t

state in terms of our current performanc

The point is we are proud of the progress tha

Don’t get so busy with the day-to-day hustle in your businessthat you forget to focus your marketing activities on keeping yourpipeline filled. To help you reach your monthly sales goals, I havecreated a list of 7 marketing techniques you should revisit in thefourth quarter of each year. They are designed to ensure that youfocus on revenue-generating activities in your small business.

1. Profile Your Best Customers. Who are your most valuable andprofitable customers? How much do they spend with you annually?Do they fit a niche? While it’s imperative that you understand yourproducts and services, it’s even more significant to understandwhat value your business brings to your customers so you cancontinue fulfilling their needs. Business issues can change quickly, making vendors potentially interchangeable. Be sure to thank yourcustomers; no one owes you business.

2. Talk With Your Clients. If your three most important customerswere sitting in a room with you, what questions would you ask them? Even with your long-time customers, schedule a quarterlyface-to-face meeting to ask for feedback or just to catch up. Youmust stay on top of their needs and understand any new factorsthat influence their decision-making processes. Have 10 questionsto ask, and then make sure you engage them around some personalsmall talk: kids, vacations, holiday plans, etc. The more personalthe relationship, the more that relationship will allow you to obtaincritical information and a strong ally.

3. Align Marketing Efforts With Your Sales Goals. Sales andmarketing have to work together in your small business. Even if you are the only salesperson in your business and you also handlethe marketing efforts, you must plan your marketing programbased on the amount of sales leads you need to generate in orderto close the required amount of sales per month. If you knowyou need 500 leads per month in order to close 50 sales, thendetermine how many phone calls, e-mails, blog posts, Facebook ads and Twitter messages must be made, sent or posted per monthto drive the desired traffic. You must establish a sales process andthen proactively work your marketing efforts so that they generatethe desired results.

4. Never Take Your Eye Off the Competition. Identify severalcompetitors. Discover what benefits they provide to theircurrent customers. Use their websites to gain insights. Compareyour branding, value proposition and pricing. Based on yourassessment, develop at least three strategies that you will use toposition yourself effectively against them. Always think, “What ismy signature move?”

5. Create Win-Win Relationships. “Give to get” is a motto thatworks well in business. A strong strategic alliance offers manybenefits, including reducing risk, sharing costs and improving timto market. How can you develop a partnership that can contributeto your bottom line? Always go into a relationship understandingyour partner’s “must have” list. It’s always best when you can fina partner who is not a direct competitor.

6. Refine Your 30-Second Commercial or Elevator Pitch. Yourmost important job as a small business owner is selling yourself and your business. When you can succinctly explain your businesit builds trust, but you shouldn’t use the same pitch forever. Fromtime to time, switch it up a little. Add a brief client list; mentiona recent award or media hit. Elevator pitches are designed todraw in your target and keep the dialogue going. Be careful not give TMI (too much information). Offer just enough to get theminterested in chatting with you again.

7. Use a Vision Board. All businesses have ups and downs. Howyou get through the tough days in your business makes a bigdifference in your productivity. One of the tricks I use and advisall my coaching clients to use is to develop a vision board of your big picture goals for your life. If you are successful the wayour business plan projects, what are the 10 things you want outof life? Create a visual representation of your list. Use cutoutsfrom magazines or clip art pictures–whatever it takes to developa visual symbol of your personal goals. Post this collage toremind yourself why you work so hard. Ten reasons will keep ymotivated on good days as well as bad ones!

By implementing these marketing techniques, you will be ableto evaluate the effectiveness of your marketing strategy and keepyourself motivated to stay on top of your sales processes.

7 Ways to Keep the Sales Rolling in Your Small Business

A Message from Joplin Supply CompanyWe had 23 vendors at Butcher's Block Banquet Center for our 2nd Annual Green Trade Show. This show is unique to our area, in that we only show ener

ef ficient products and solutions. We also offer continuing education classes for contractors.

There are so many products out there right now that can save contractors and end-users money. We are trying to do a better job of helping contractors sell

these products and ideas to their customers. We've found that the companies who have money to spend right now, are generally spending it on products th

make them more ef ficient, whether it's updated lighting, occupancy sensors, newer HVAC units, etc.

Reflexology & MoreReflexology is a science utilizing reflex areas existing in the feet and hands corresponding to all of the glands, organs and parts of the

body. Proper stimulation of these reflexes alleviates many health issues naturally and should not be confused with massage. Doctors

agree that 75% of health issues are linked to stress and tension. Reflexology improves nerve and blood supply and helps to normalize

body functions.

Lavonna Preble’s Creed: Reflexology is the most Biblical medicinal treatment that I have researched. With reflexology, I have learned

to expect miracles and give the credit to God because I, myself, do not have the ability to cure a disease. I am merely a vessel blessed

with a gift to share with others in their time of need of treatment for relief from their discomfort. As a caregiver it is my duty to be an

example of health and love towards my patients by placing their health first and working with other health professionals to provide the

best treatment possible. No one will be turned away from the amazing, healthy experience of reflexology.

INTERIORS by Charissa LLCCharissa Robinett is a college-educated business professional who decided to leave her 10+ year career in human resources to pursue

her dream career of interior design. Growing up in Santiago, Chile, Charissa gained an appreciation for architecture at a young age. Her

passion for interior design was evident early on as she got excited about decorating her room with each of her family’s frequent moves.

She did what seemed logical and decided to pursue a business degree when she graduated from high school, building her career on her fir

job as a bilingual secretary. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Missouri Southern State University whi

managing an employment agency and later transitioning into an HR Generalist role in TAMKO Building Products’ corporate human

resources department. As she approached graduation, she moved to Leggett & Platt’s corporate human resources department and worked

as an employment coordinator for over five years. In her free time, she watched countless hours of HGTV, leafed through the pages of

numerous decorating magazines and books, and decorated for friends and family on the side.

Determined to turn her life-long hobby into a career, she enrolled in the Interior Design program at Pittsburg State University in August

of 2007 and attended classes full-time for three semesters while working at the Better Living Store in Joplin. She poured herself into her

studies and became a member of the Phi Upsilon Omicron and Tau Sigma national honor societies. As a student, she also became involv

with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and the National Associatio

of Home Builders (NAHB), serving as Vice President of Pittsburg State University’s student chapter of IIDA during the 2008-09 schoolyear.

By the summer of 2009, she had completed all but two classes required to obtain a second degree in Interior Design so she moved

forward with plans to start her own decorating business while taking classes on a part-time basis. Just before graduating in May 2010,

she received national recognition by earning the second place prize in an international student design competition sponsored by the Retai

Design Institute. After having received additional training from the Home Staging Institute and the Staging Diva, she found herself ready

to launch her new career. For more information about INTERIORS by Charissa LLC, call Charissa at (417) 850-7191 or visit www.interiorsbycharissa.com.

Ask the Executive Coach...Question:“I like your “Burning Question” concept you mentioned in your Due & DONE: “How Do you get all that’s Due DONE”

seminar you did for the Chamber. Explain more about that.”

Answer:

The Burning Question is this: “ Is what I’m doing right now the most productive use of my time?”

If we asked ourselves that all day long we would be so much more productive. Sometimes we stray off course

during the day-- probably because it is more comfortable. When we stray we begin doing tasks that are not our toppriorities. Lower priority items are sometimes easier to do. Before we know it we have done much less than we set

out to do for the day—and probably haven’t spent enough time working on the top priority items we told ourselves

we would do.

I think part of it is that sometimes (or many times, for some) we are more fatigued than we realize. There is a lot going on in our lives a

we tend to rob from our hours of sleep and pay for it the next day. Because of that we are not operating at our peak performance level,

and it’s easier to gravitate toward a task or behavior that is simpler to do. It’s not something that is intentional -- it just happens.

For that reason we should be asking ourselves the Burning Question all day long:

“Is what I’m doing right now the most productive use of my time?”

Asking ourselves this question will keep us on track. Consider this example: When we drive a car we hold on to the steering wheel sothat the car doesn’t stray off course to one side or another. Shouldn’t we do this with our day, too? Don’t stray from doing the things

that really matter. Of course this doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t take an occasional break so that we can relax and rejuvenate. This is a

important part of our day, too. It helps us focus when we do return to the job.

When you are at work, pretend that you have two hats. At any point during the day you need to know which hat you are wearing. Is it

the “friendship hat” or the “work hat?” You need to wear both hats, but you shouldn’t be wearing them at the same time. Your work ha

should be worn more than your friendship hat, but the friendship hat conversation is important, too, for it helps you to be an effective tea

member. It’s also important to remember not to switch hats when you are involved in a conversation. If you do, you will lose your foc

and effectiveness. Keep your focus so that you are “present” during friendship conversation and “present” during work conversations.

During our Due & DONE seminar we also talked about the importance of doing a Time Log, which will show you how you handle your

time. We will spend more time on this process at the next Due & DONE seminar. If you or anyone wants to get on the list and attend t

next one, call Ginger LaMar at the Chamber office: 417.624.4150.

I am writing this column on Sunday, so now that I’ve had my work hat on to do it, I’m going to put my friendship hat back on until

Monday morning. I’m not sure what you will be doing this weekend, but try to get enough rest, enjoy your friendship hat all weekend a

then be ready to go Monday morning. Your work hat is waiting for you.
