Mayor Kirk F. Hunsaker

Dear Santaquin Residents and Friends, I hope you have noticed all of the many projects we have in the works. Crews

are working hard to build our infrastructure and provide improvements so that our community can continue to flourish. I wanted to take a moment to provide you an update on these efforts.

Old Public Works Building/Recreation Center Remodel:

Most of you are aware of the old turquoise colored building near Santaquin Elementary that has served as our Public Works building for the past 40 years. Many of you may not realize that our PW crews have relocated to their new facility on North Center Street.

I am excited to report that city is going to reskin and remodel this building into a new Recreation & Events center. Not only will this facility provide an improved venue for our tumbling, aerobics, karate and other indoor programs, it will also provide improved bathroom facilities that can be used during our Rodeo and other events. The project is designed and about to go out to bid for construction with funds the city already has on hand.

Apple Valley Elementary School:

Construction has already begun on the new Apple Valley Elementary School, located on North Center Street. I am proud to report that Santaquin City has partnered with the District to expand the gym area of this new facility. The partnership will result in the installation of bleachers with a seating capacity of nearly 300 as well as provide hardwood floors for an adult size basketball court which can easily be divided. The facility will also have a stage for community performances. There is no way that Santaquin City could afford such a wonderful venue on its own. However, by working together with the school district, we can maximize our joint resources for the overall benefit of our community.

Grocery Store:

As Mayor, the question I am asked more than any other is “When are we getting a new grocery store?” I wish I had a definitive answer. At this point, it is in the hands of the grocer and we are very hopeful that an announcement will come in the near future. With that said, Santaquin City stands as a willing partner in support of this new commercial venture. Countless efforts have been made to remove every obstacle so that we would be prepared when the grocer is ready. I am excited to report that we are also planning for a newly landscaped gathering area with a decorative monument or fountain on the north east corner of 400 East and Main Street

to beautify and enhance the curb appeal of this commercial area and our overall community.

Summit Ridge Parkway Extension to US-6 Main Street:

Like the grocery store retail development, a great number of tasks have been completed in support of a new northern access point to Summit Ridge. Engineering and design are complete and the city has secured all of the land necessary for the parkway extension to Main Street. The city has also secured grant funding to construct acceleration and deceleration lanes along Main Street. Finally, the city is currently negotiating with the developer to form a financial partnership so that construction on the road would begin in the spring of 2018.

Mayor Kirk F. Hunsaker

Questar Gas Line Extension:

Construction has begun on a major Questar Gas line project from Orchard Lane, along 200 North, Lark Lane, and down through the new secondary Summit Ridge Access corridor. One of the major constraints for Summit Ridge and the commercial district near our south exit is the availability of Natural Gas. This project will remove this major obstacle and lay the foundation for our community’s continued growth. While travel along 200 North and Lark Lane has been, and will continue to be, difficult from April-August, the long-term benefits of this pipeline will far outweigh the inconvenience. Furthermore, at the end of the project, Questar Gas will be repaving all of Lark Lane and 200 North, which will benefit those who have been most affected by this construction.

Water Main Replacements:

Public Works crews are in the process of enhancing our overall water system. They are actively replacing our two oldest water lines along 100 South and 400 South. Later in the year they will be working to construct a new Booster Pump station which will allow for the movement of water from any of our water sources to any of our pressure zones. This project will be especially beneficial to our East Bench where elevation differences causes us system capacity issues. While these projects may not seem as exciting, it is reassuring to know that our crews are working hard each and every day to insure we have high quality drinking water for our family’s every day needs.

300 West “Safe Walking Routes to School” Sidewalks:

Last year, Santaquin City was awarded a $588K Federal grant to install sidewalks along 300 West (North of Main Street). While the project is still proceeding, due to federally mandated requirements, the project is moving slower than hoped.

Senior Center / Library Building:

This summer, Santaquin City, with the support of its Senior Citizen Board, Library Board, Recreation Board and Museum Board, will be seeking public input for the possible construction of a new Senior Citizen Center and Library Building. This building, along with our new recreation center, will provide more offerings to seniors, library patrons, and recreational enthusiasts alike. Multi-use class room space will provide a venue for art classes, technology classes and college courses, while the overall physical expansion will increase seating capacity for our senior’s offerings and the space needed for expanded library resources. It is our intent to get as much public input as possible so that we can design a facility that truly meets our needs while working to keep it as affordable as possible. I invite you to participate in this process as we hold town hall meetings and prepare to take this concept to the voters in November.

Other Projects:

Over the next fiscal year, Santaquin City will be installing new soccer fields on our south end of town. We are working to enhance our rodeo grounds with improved lighting, bathrooms, and seating capacity. Finally, we are working to make small enhancements throughout the city to all of our many parks. We want Santaquin City to be a family friendly community with great facilities and venues to enhance the quality of life of every resident of our city; regardless of age.

While I covered many of the projects and initiatives that we have in works, there are just as many unnamed projects going on in the background. New road maintenance projects, irrigation ponds, and master planning initiatives are just a few of the many efforts put forth by our elected leaders, city staff, and countless volunteers.

Santaquin City is a wonderful place to live because of the efforts and sacrifice of those who came before us. Their legacy lives on in us and it is our responsibility to carry that legacy forward. I am personally humbled to serve you as your mayor and I am honored to carry that torch forward with each one of you. It is our challenge to work and sacrifice today so that we might leave a similar legacy for our children and their children. Please join Kim and me as we look for ways we can serve our neighbors in this great community we call home.
