• Duke of Normandy (region in the north of France that had been conquered by the Vikings)

• Invaded England with a Norman (North men) army

• Defeated Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings. – Harold was killed by an arrow

to the eye (ouch!!)• William declared all of England

• In general it limited power of the King and guaranteed basic political and legal rights to all
