1. Why was William the Conqueror so famous?

• Duke of Normandy (region in the north of France that had been conquered by the Vikings)

• Invaded England with a Norman (North men) army

• Defeated Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings. – Harold was killed by an arrow

to the eye (ouch!!)• William declared all of England

his property and kept 1/5 for himself

• English lords in support of Harold lost their land and William granted that land to about 200 Norman lords

2. What was the significance of the Magna Carta?

• Magna Carta: Document drawn up by English nobles and approved by King John, guaranteed certain basic political rights

• Nobles wanted to safeguard their feudal rights and limit the king’s power

• It would later be argued that certain clauses applied to all citizens including– No taxation without representation– A jury trial– The protection of the law

• In general it limited power of the King and guaranteed basic political and legal rights to all

3. Why was the development of England and France so important in European history?

• DEMOCRATIC RULE • DEMOCRATIC RULE• DEMOCRATIC RULE• This rested on setting up a centralized government

• Creation of common law• Court systems
