This weekend we will be taking up a collection for the
Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center. They are
looking for a new facility that provides a warm, homelike
environment for children. Primary emphasis is placed on the
well being of the child. This agency partners with law en-
forcement, Child Protective Services, the District Attorney
and County Attorney’s Office, as well as, medical and mental
health professions. Please be generous. Make checks out to
Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center.
Family Reflection Time on the Gospel
John the Baptist’s preaching leads many to repent for
their sins. The cleansing waters of his baptism symbol-
ize their turning toward a new way of life. Yet John
speaks of a new baptism that One mightier than he will
give—a baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire. We are
greatly blessed to have received this baptism. Receiving
God’s own life has lit an unquenchable fire in us, the
desire to know and make known our God. Today is our
feast day!
ON THE WAY HOME FROM MASS:….
Who announced Jesus’ coming in today’s Gospel? What
was God the Father’s announcement?
LIVING THE WORD
When you gather for a meal, talk about how Jesus must
have felt when he heard God the Father’s voice telling
him he was his beloved Son. Explain how each of us
becomes a child of God at our
Baptism. God the Father wants us to know we are also
his beloved sons and daughters. Using a sign from our
Baptism, make the Sign of the Cross on the forehead of
the person next to you, saying “You are a beloved son/
daughter of God.” Thank God for loving you so much
he makes you part of his family.

Church Bulletin box question: “Why is ‘fear of the
Lord’ a good thing and then told “do not be afraid?”
What is the connotation of each? Good question.
To modern ears the word ‘fear’ is almost negative.
We associate it with threat or some punishment. The
word ‘fear’ has different senses or meanings.
Fear of the Lord is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
It is a filial fear in the sense of a son or daughter fears to
offend his/her father or to be separated from him. Here
we really love God with all our heart. He is Abba, Papa,
Father. He has given us everything and we deeply love
and reverence him. We respect him too much to ever
want to mar our relationship with him. We thus come to
fear sin that creates distance between us and God.
Please reread the Act of Contrition. It explains it well.
There is a good article on the website –What does it
mean to fear the Lord by Msgr. Charles Pope.
“Do Not Be Afraid” reminds us that God is with us in
our fears, struggles, hardships, confusion as he is One of
us. God will not necessarily take away our pain but will
be with us, Emmanuel.
