University of London Prof. William Brumfitt, foundation professor of path- ology at Southampton University, has been appointed to the chair of medical microbiology tenable at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine. Dr. C. A. C. Mims has been appointed to the chair of microbiology tenable at Guy’s Hospital Medical School. Dr. Mims, who is 46, graduated B.sc. in zoology from the University of London in 1947, M.B. in 1952, and M.D. in 1963. He was for two years a demonstrator at the Middlesex Hospital, and held hospital clinical appointments in 1952-53 before going to Uganda as a medical research officer at the Virus Research Institute, Entebbe. Since 1956 he has worked in the department of microbiology of the John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australian National University, as research fellow, then senior fellow, and finally professorial fellow. In 1963-64 he was a Rockefeller travelling medical research fellow, and on sabbatical leave in 1969-70 he went to the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia. The title of professor of bacteriology has been conferred on Dr. A. A. Glynn in respect of his post at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School. Dr. Glynn, who is 48, was educated at University College Hospital Medical School, graduating M.B. in 1946 and M.D. in 1960. He became M.R.c.P. in 1954 and M.R.C.PATH. in 1964. University of SouthamptonDr. H. P. Rang has been appointed to the newly

established chair of pharmacology in the department ofphysiology and biochemistry.

Dr. Rang, who is 35, graduated in physiology from UniversityCollege, London, in 1957, and obtained the degree of M.SC.in pharmacology in 1958. In 1961 he graduated M.B. from theUniversity of London, and was then elected to the first J. H.Burn fellowship in pharmacology in the University of Oxford.He was awarded the degree of D.PHIL. from Oxford Universityin 1965, and in the same year was appointed lecturer in pharma-cology. He was elected fellow and tutor in physiology at LincolnCollege, Oxford, in 1966.

Dr. P. B. Guyer, consultant radiologist to the Southamp-ton University hospital group, has been appointed clinicalsub-dean in the Faculty of Medicine.

University of GlasgowProf. E. K. Cruickshank has been appointed to the new

chair of postgraduate medical education; he has also beenappointed dean of postgraduate medicine, in successionto Prof. C. M. Fleming.

Professor Cruickshank was educated at Aberdeen GrammarSchool and Aberdeen University, graduating M.B. with honoursin 1937 and M.D. with honours in 1948. After a year as a researchfellow in surgery at Harvard University, he was appointed assist-ant in the department of medicine at Aberdeen University.He joined the R.A.M.C. in 1940 and was posted to Singapore,where he was taken prisoner by the Japanese and held through-out the war. He was appointed lecturer in medicine at Aberdeenin 1945, and senior lecturer in 1948. In 1950 he was appointedto the chair of medicine in the University of the West Indiesat Kingston, Jamaica, where he has been since. He becameF.R.C.P. in 1955, and was appointed O.B.E. in 1961. He is a con-sultant to the World Health Organisation, and has travelledwidely in connection with medical education. He has pub-lished numerous papers on nutrition, neurological disorders, andother topics.

Computers in the N.H.S.The Secretary of State for Social Services, Sir Keith

Joseph, has decided that National Health Service regionalhospital board computer equipment should be standar-dised, in order to achieve compatibility of equipment andsystems. Since the Department of Health and Social

Security and most of the regional hospital boards alreadyhave computers in the ICL 1900 series, it has been decidedto standardise on these machines. Possibilities for stan-dardisation elsewhere in the N.H.S. will be consideredwhen the current review of computer utilisation in theN.H.S. has been completed.

N.H.S. Management StudyA steering committee to study the detailed arrangements

for managing the comprehensive services envisaged bythe Consultative Document on the reorganisation of theNational Health Service had its first meeting on Aug. 5.The steering committee (chairman, Sir Philip Rogers,permanent secretary in the Department of Health andSocial Security) will be aided by a study group which willbe assisted by management consultants and the resourcesof the Brunel University Hospital Organisation ResearchUnit.

Libel Action

The date for the hearing of the libel action being broughtby Mr. S. L. Drummond-Jackson, L.D.S., against theBritish Medical Association (as owners and publishers ofthe British Medical Journal) and the authors of a paperentitled Physiological Responses to Intermittent Metho-hexitone for Conservative Dentistry (Br. med. V. May 31,1969, p. 540) has been fixed for June 12, 1972. The hearingis expected to last several weeks. Last year the Court ofAppeal, with a dissenting judgment from the Master of theRolls, dismissed an interlocutory appeal by the B.M.A.against Mr. Justice Milmo’s refusal to strike out the

plaintiff’s statement of claim as disclosing no cause ofaction (see Br. med. J. Feb. 21, 1970, p. 509). Mr. Drum-mond-Jackson is a London dental surgeon and principalfounder of the Society for the Advancement of Anxsthesiain Dentistry.

N.H.S. Study on CollaborationThe Department of Health and Social Security has

set up a working-party to study the arrangements necessaryfor close collaboration between the local authorities and thenew health authorities when the reorganisation of localgovernment and of the National Health Service comesinto effect in April, 1974. The chairman of the workingparty, which held its first meeting on Aug. 3, is Mr.A. R. W. Bavin (deputy secretary, Department of Healthand Social Security).

A lecture on the effects of pulvinectomy (surgical ablationof the pulvinar) will be given by Dr. 1. S. Cooper (New York)on Thursday, Aug. 19, at 5.30 P.M. at the Institute of Neurology,The National Hospital, Queen Square, London WC1N 3BG.

CORRIGENDA : Degeneration of the Autonomic Nervous

System.-In the article by Dr. Roger Bannister (July 24), inthe 12th line of the last paragraph (p. 179) " Vanderhaeghenet al. 21" " should have appeared in place of "Graham andOppenheimer 19 ".
