A record crowd of 430 per-sons was on hand to cele-brate the induction of MGP Chairwoman Karen Sea-berg into the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame on January 24. The ceremony was the highlight of the Chamber’s 96th annual membership banquet, which was held at the Atchison Heri-tage Conference Center.

Karen is only the eighth individual and the first woman to be inducted into the Hall of Fame since its establishment in 1982. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is “to recognize individuals who have gener-ously contributed their time, service and philanthropic sup-port to enhance the economic well-being of the Atchison area. Members of this pres-tigious group demonstrate outstanding leadership quali-ties, visionary excellence and unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life for all citizens through a variety of progressive programs and initiatives.”

In receiving the honor, she joins her father, MGP Board member and Chairman Emer-itus Cloud L. “Bud” Cray, and

her husband, past MGP Board Chairman, President and CEO Ladd Seaberg, who were se-lected to the Hall of Fame in 1992 and 2009, respectively.

Karen’s accomplishments as a community leader at the “lo-cal, state and national” levels were acknowledged by a se-ries of speakers, who included United States Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas, and Kansas Governor Sam Brownback. Others taking turns at the podium were Bud; Karen and Ladd’s daughters, Mrs. Roy (Lori) Mingus, and Mrs. Kyle (Melissa) Huntington; Cham-ber President Jacque Pregont; Rick Berger, President of the Berger Company in Atchison; and Jonathan Mize, President and CEO of Atchison-based Blish-Mize Company, who also served as Master of Cer-emonies. In addition, a letter from U.S. Senator Pat Roberts of Kansas, who was unable to attend in person, was read aloud at the event.

Examples of Karen’s extraor-dinary community involve-ment, support and leadership activities were cited through-out the ceremony, which attendees overwhelmingly described as moving, highly inspirational and full of fun. The banquet planning com-mittee chose a Disney theme for the event in recognition of

Karen and her family being huge, longtime fans of, as she says, “everything Disney.”

During her acceptance speech, Karen commended several others for their contri-butions to various community achievements. She touched on the increase and signif-icance of leadership roles women continue to take on across society, and encour-aged all present to pursue life with a positive, winning attitude despite periods of adversity that might occur along the way. She noted that, while many signs of progress dot the community, much re-mains to be done to enhance Atchison’s vibrancy, appeal and economic well-being. She urged the crowd to work diligently as individuals and together with their neighbors and as a community to help Atchison realize its greater potential.

Karen’s remarks drew an extended, standing ovation. Comments by other speakers brought the crowd to its feet, as well. These included state-ments by Bud, who expressed pride in Karen’s “amazing strength and leadership qual-ities,” and the significance that community involvement continues to have in shaping MGP’s corporate culture.
