The stories of local women’s suffrage supporters are often eclipsed by more prominent activities in England, but there were many campaigns in Wales, too. Local supporters of note included Rosa and Ethel Hovey, Laura McLaren, Baroness Aberconwy, and Mrs Walton-Evans, who set up Wales’ first organisation for women’s suffrage in Llandudno in 1907. In 1913, a number of local women joined the National Union of Women’s Suffragist Societies’ Great Pilgrimage, and marched all the way from North Wales to a rally in Hyde Park, where they joined 50,000 fellow campaigners (men included) from across Britain. 19
