Child care professionals have an incred-ibly important job – nurturing chil-dren and looking after their safety and

wellbeing. As such it is important that peoplethis direction are well prepared and receiveadequate training.

The majority of childcare training coursesavailable similar core topics, these includechild development, early childhood educationand communication. These days IT training isalso included to a certain extent. This mayonly be simple computer skills, but a basic

knowledge is required inorder to operate some com-puter based learning systemsthat some childcare groupsand companies employ.

Childcare Courses IrelandChildcare courses, regardlessof the nature of the contentand the manner of teachingemployed at the various col-

leges, can be quite comprehensive these days. There are certain laws and guidelines thateveryone in this profession has to adhere to,and as a result these form an important partof any course. Modules on caring for children, appropriate behaviour, occupational first aidand a general introduction to working inchildcare are all necessary and any goodcourse will include them.

The other essential element of any goodchildcare course is work experience.Whether the course itself lasts one, two orthree years, there should be an element ofwork experience to introduce you to the un-predictable world of work! This is most def-initely the fun element! The length of theplacement all depends on the individual col-

lege & the length of the course. Some place-ments may last just weeks, whereas otherswill require you to send an entire year work-ing. This information will be available to youbefore you enrol on the course and the ex-perience you would like can often determinewhich course you go for!

In terms of the career prospects on offerfor individuals looking to complete a child-care course, there are a wide range of op-tions. Some people choose to go on toteaching, others become a nanny in a privatehome or work in a day care centre. Therewould also be options to work with disabledor disadvantaged children which can be anextremely rewarding career choice for suit-able candidates.

Adult Learning; A second chance

SHORT courses at night schools, vocationalcourses designed to give people a trade or en-hance existing skills and attending university

courses on a full or part time basis are all forms ofadult learning.

Adult learning courses usually last between eightweeks and nine months, depending on the nature ofthe course and the content. For example, a skillscourse to enhance administration skills will proba-bly last longer than one covering cake decoration.Adult learning courses usually require an individualto attend two to three times a week for one or twohour classes.

Adult Learning, further educationThe classes can be scheduled at any time of day

but are most commonly run as evening courses tohelp people to arrange them around their workingpatterns or their other commitments, such as caringfor children. There may also be two versions of the

same course running simultaneously, one in the dayand one in the evening, to give more flexibility &cater for a those with differing schedules.

In terms of the course content to be found onadult learning schemes, it varies in relation to thecourse itself, but the majority of the work and as-sessment is classroom based with a practical examor regular exam at the end of the course. However, the typical course content for adult learning variesdepending on area of study.

In terms of career progression, adult learningcourses can considerably enhance your careerprospects. A good number of the courses are de-signed to introduce you to new skills related to yourexisting career or enhance those that you alreadyhave. The ones that can supplement your existingknowledge can enhance your employability for fu-ture jobs elsewhere or indeed enhance your posi-tion within the company, thus making yourpromotion prospects more real.

Are you looking for a careerchange? Making up lost time?Do you need a slip of paper to

get that promotion, or maybe youwant a new hobby, or to develop yourlanguage skills? Whatever your aims, you probably have too many respon-sibilities to drop everything and headoff back to college. Entering full timeeducation can mean hefty debts, astruggle to make ends meet and dis-connection from a successful careerpath: a serious lifestyle commitment.Evening courses, on the other hand, might take up a small chunk of freetime and a little cash, but don’t re-quire you to drastically change yourlife.

Evening courses might not requirethe same sacrifices as going full time, but that doesn’t limit what you canachieve: it’s possible to spend yourevenings doing anything, right up tobecoming a doctor, though it’ll take alittle longer than the intensive route.Another major benefit of an eveningeducation is an entirely differentlearning environment. With many stu-dents having been out of formal edu-cation for significant periods of time, group classes tend to produce amore mature atmosphere. Studentsunderstand each other’s apprehen-sion when it comes to learning, andmany describe their classmates assupportive and dedicated. Many latenight time students arrive after a fulldays work, have limited time to com-plete assignments and juggle numer-ous other responsibilities in theirlives, but still enjoy complete courses, and do so successfully. Students tendto come from a much wider range ofage groups: age, as they say, is no bar-rier to learning.

If you’re looking to gain a high levelqualification you’ll have to plan ahead,as most providers of university-levelcourses run their evening courses ona similar schedule to the universities

themselves, commencing in Septem-ber or January each year. You’ll alsoneed to think carefully about yourlong term future, as undertaking ahigh level evening course may requireyou to live near to the learning centrefor a substantial amount of time. When studying in the evening, for ex-ample, PhDs regularly take at least 6years to complete. Most universitiesnow run a few of their regularcourses with night time options, soyour local university is a great placeto start the search. By signing up witha major university, you’ll gain accessto the extensive facilities (and perks)available to the full time students, andbenefit from the universities reputa-tion. Most courses at this level re-quire prior lower level qualificationsor extensive relevant experience, though if you’re doing something with

a business focus, decent managementexperience is often more thanenough.

If you want that advanced qualifica-tion, but the universities are just toofar away (or you prefer to move atyour own pace) there’s always thestudy from home option. This marketis dominated by the likes of the OpenUniversity, whose courses include al-most anything that can be done with-out extensive onsite tutoring.Advanced photography, design and in-novation, criminology and even aPGCE (teaching qualification) are allavailable. Whilst there are some timerestrictions, courses run by centreslike the OU are by far the most flex-ible, as you’ll able to do everythingfrom your own living room, largely asand when you want to. You might notever meet your tutors, but they willact as useful hands on guides via theInternet. Should it all get too much, you’ll even have the option to leave italone for a few months.

For most people, the thought of afull on diploma, let alone masters orPhD, might be too much to contem-plate. If you’re looking for somethinga little less long term and a little lessstrenuous, commonly available op-tions include short courses, manyonly a few weeks in length, thesecover subjects such as languages (atall levels), writing (a subject in whichthe Irish Writer’s Centre in Dublin at-tracts particularly prestigious eveninglecturers), philosophy, music, childcare and film studies. Universities arean equally valuable resource in thesekind of areas, though you may findthat smaller, private schools and spe-cialised centres offer more flexibilitywhen it comes to schedules and

course length. For sub-jects like languages andmusic, private tutors(check the local papers)can produce tailor madeclasses at affordableprices, especially if youcan form a group tostudy together.

Dublin is an obviouscentre for Ireland’sevening courses, offeringa huge variety of topicsat varying levels overdozens of institutions, large and small.Elsewhere, the better known collegesin Galway, Limerick, Cork and Dun-dalk all offer impressive evening op-tions, as do private schools inWaterford, Sligo and Roscommon(amongst many other areas). If you’rebased in a more remote area, youmay be able to find more limitedcourses on offer at local schools orthrough private tutors, but will haveto travel or enrol on a distance learn-

ing course to experience more indepth and intensive subject matter.

Just for fun, or as an exercise in CVbuilding and personal development, the large and varied selection ofevening courses on offer around Ire-land are likely to fulfil your educa-tional needs without interfering withyour career. From cheap, large-groupcourses lasting a few weeks to a fullon doctorate that can take severalyears, there’s plenty on offer to pleaseeveryone.

If it’s opportunity you’re looking for, ifyou want to shake up how you seethe world, or even just see more of it,

then maybe it’s time to learn anotherlanguage. There is no doubt acquiring asecond or third language can be chal-lenging, but there are huge benefits forwork, pleasure, and health reasons.

Career opportunities skyrocket whenyou have another language. In thesetough economic times people need tomake their CVs unique and significant.Multi-lingual employees are more bangfor their buck for their employers, andmany companies reward staff who usethe additional languages in their careerwith higher salaries.

Irish companies need people withsecond languages to create and maintainbusiness in and with foreign-speakingcountries. European languages such asGerman, French, or Spanish are in hugedemand as the economy in ContinentalEurope improves, and as both Africa andSouth America become more open toforeign business. Meanwhile foreigncompanies need employees who speaktheir language as well as English to helpexpand their businesses into Ireland andother English-speaking countries. Notonly are the European languages in de-mand, but so are Mandarin, Hindi, Russ-ian, Japanese, and Arabic. Irish

employees with second languages are inparticular demand as Ireland has astrong positive image abroad that peo-ple are aware of and can relate to. Thedemand for Multi-lingual Irish employ-ees has never been higher.

french, spanish, german and other lan-guages courses in Dublin and Ireland

Of course second languages aren’tjust for work. Knowing the language ofthe country you are travelling in canmake your holiday much easier to enjoy, and connects people in a social and cul-tural way. By speaking the local languageyou are more likely to be treated betterbecause the locals see that you’ve made

an effort to learn their language. Thismakes a difference in the way you seethe world and other people. Whenlearning a foreign language you also gaininsight into the culture and character ofa people. In a sense, language can beconsidered as the verbal expression ofculture.

But it’s not all just work and play, learning another language is good foryou and has been shown to improvememory and cognitive skills. Oftenwhen learning a second language manypeople discover they start paying moreattention to English grammar and ex-pand their vocabulary.

Currently running tencourses that range in diffi-culty from absolute begin-

ner to advanced programmer, theEuropean Computer Driving Li-cense (ECDL) is run as a selectionof not-for-profit qualifications, withthe aim of empowering individualsand companies by teaching essen-tial skills in modern computer tech-nology. The courses are designed toaccount for anybody and every-body, from those sitting down infront of a computer for the firsttime to those looking to lay thefoundations for a career in web de-sign, or working with digital images.

The more advanced ECDL courseseven allow you to train as an IT In-structor.

A major benefit of ECDL’s non-profit status, of course, is that you’llbe receiving professional training ata cost far below the typical marketvalue. The courses are internation-ally recognized, currently running in148 countries and 41 languagesworldwide, and therefore provide ahighly transferrable skill set that’swell established amongst employersas a good demonstration of neces-sary modern IT skills. Each coursefeatures a regularly updated syl-labus that takes into account the

ever-changing world of computing(the syllabus is currently on it’s 5threvision), and so won’t leave youlagging behind the times, and istaught by a highly qualified instruc-tor who’s able to give plenty ofhands on assistance.

Both individuals and employeescan access ECDL courses, makingthem an affordable way for compa-nies to enhance the skills of itsworkforce as well as an exercise inpersonal development. While thecontent at the easier end of thespectrum is fairly self explanatory(using the Internet, email and com-mon programs), the complexities ofweb design and system usage aretargeted skills for people aiming todevelop a career in – or at least astrong understanding of -IT, and tar-geted at individuals with an under-graduate level of education.

ECDL Courses cover the fol-lowing areas:• Beginner: Computers for begin-ners; Internet and Email.• Intermediate: Essential Com-puter Skills.• Advanced: Advanced ComputerSkills; 2D Computer Aided Design;Website Creation; Working withDigital Images; Health InformaticsSystem Usage.• Professional: The standard for ITprofessionals; IT Training Skills.

Courses are structured in a for-mat that first teaches the material, and then requires students todemonstrate their understanding ofit in a series of modular tests (or,for the shorter classes, with a singletest). Completion of a course cantake anything from 8 hours to hun-dreds of hours, depending on boththe course and the candidate’s abil-ity.

To give an example, the interme-diate level ‘Essential ComputerSkills’ course requires candidates(by the completion of the course)to have a good knowledge of theuse of File Management, Word Pro-cessing, Spreadsheets, Databases,Web Browsing and Presentations, and comes with plenty of online

practice tests and training materi-als to get candidates started. A typ-ical candidate might be expected totake a few hours to complete eachof the seven modules.

To examine any one of thesecourses in more details, head overto the downloads section of theIrish EDCL website, where you canget hold a series of syllabi and pro-gram brochures giving an extremelythorough overview of exactlywhat’s on offer. The Irish office alsoruns a series of free, helpful semi-nars in order to assist HR, Trainingand IT managers in finding the cor-rect course for their staff, and iden-tifying the areas in which theirbusiness’ technological outlookneeds to improve.
