    HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT

Did you know? In 2012 NorthTec scored top spot out of 16 tertiary providers in a national study

showing that it leads the way when engaging and responding to the needs of

Mori Nursing students. NorthTec had the highest percentage of Mori in New

Zealand on its Bachelor of Nursing programme. Some 85% of Mori students

were completing their courses and then re-enrolling the following year and 75%

of its Mori students have completed the Bachelor of Nursing programme.

NorthTecs Sport and Recreation diploma and degree programmes, run in

partnership with AUT, offer students quality facilities at the ASB Stadium,

Kensington Park. This year, Level 6 diploma students went high-tech in a pilot

programme which saw them using latest model iPads as a learning tool.

Conservation tutor, Ben Barr, was so fascinated by David Attenboroughsenvironmental documentary series Our World that he started up his own gecko

club at the age of 7. Ben never considered it possible to have a career doing

what he loved, but doing a Science degree in Australia and then working for DOC

around New Zealand made it possible for him. He now wants to inspire a new

wave of passionate conservationists and ecologists at NorthTec.

NorthTec continues to play a key role in sports development by sponsoring the

Northland secondary schools rugby league Adam Blair XIII competition which

was won this year by Kaitaia College. The NorthTec Adam Blair XIII representative

selection this year played the Warriors development team over Easter.

Horticulture and Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) tutor Klaus Lotz, on

leaving Germany worked on an organic Cocoa farm in Bahia, Brazil. He traveled

through the Amazon Basin and was surprised at the levels of deforestation which

inspired him to work in the SRD eld here in Northland.

The Certicate in Marine Adventure and Eco-Tourism prepares students for

careers in the outdoor recreation and maritime tourism area. It provides them

with a good skill base in sailing, kayak guiding, power boating, risk management,
