EVENTING CLUB NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2019

This Month’s Rider Q&A – Kristy Pel

1. What do you like most about eventing? Being able to put in hard work on my horse at home and watch as they try their best to perform in a competitive environment. It’s easily the best sport. 2. What’s your favourite thing about being a horse

person? Just an all-round love for the animal and for the sport. 3. What’s your least favourite thing about being a horse

person? The associated expense! And having to retire an injured horse. 4. Who is the person who has inspired you most in the

equine world? My coach, Amanda Cameron. I would be falling off on a daily basis without her guidance. 5. What do you like to do most, after riding your horse of course! Napping. There is little time for much else!

6. If you could go on an all-expenses paid holiday for 2 weeks, where would you go? Any place hot and tropical, with a swim-up bar. Provided I could find someone to look after my horses. 7. If you could give your younger self advice, what would it be? Don’t work your horse too hard and look after tendons and joints!

EVENTING CLUB NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2019

NTEC and WTPC 2DE – Quercus Park This weekend attracted over 180 entries with approximately 60 competitors riding in grades 4&5 on Saturday and the remainder on Sunday. Quercus once again proved to be an excellent venue for the event, with the cross country course running well and the show jumping arena holding up well in the dry conditions. With our new show jump poles and the new XC jumps looking great and riding well, the standard of the course just keeps on getting better and better. A HUGE thank you to all the competitors and their supporters who assisted at working bees and on the day, to the many officials who provided their time and expertise, to the NTEC Committee who worked long and hard to plan, organise and help run the event, to Rural Youth for allowing us to use their venue and a BIG thankyou to West Tamar Pony Club for working with us in organising and running the event. WTPC put in heaps of hours at working bees, putting up dressage arenas, and much. much more in the running of the two days. We couldn’t have done it without you!!!

New Cross Country Resource Guide

Compiled by Will Enzinger with the assistance of leading Australian Coaches, the first version of the Cross Country Resource for Athletes, Coaches and Officials is now available on the Equestrian Australia Eventing page HERE.

Here’s a useful excerpt from the XC Resource Guide:

17) Goal Setting / When to call it a day

“Goal setting is a fantastic tool which allows you to look at the whole calendar and earmark the pinnacle event at the end of the season, then putting in enough lead up events in order to become qualified and able to compete at this event.

The talent in goal setting is the ability to recognise when it’s not going to plan and amending this plan to help keep your horse confident. Sometimes the greatest plans to come through with the goods is not what is needed or working out. The rider recognising this and not letting the dream of where they hoped to be, get in the way of the horse being able to stay confident and learn at the rate they need to. It’s disappointing when we can’t reach our goal in the set time we had planned it, though the show will always go on and there is most certainly always another event next time.

This skill is also important to develop at each event when your horse is not responding normally or uncharacteristically and you the rider being able to determine this and act on it quickly. As mentioned above there is always another event, even though your heart was set on that one, in the interest of you and your horse it’s best to call it a day, go home and consolidate the area it was struggling with and have a go at the next event.”
