Canadian EventingWhat is Eventing? The sport of Eventing is best described as an equine triathlon. It began as a military exercise and competition for cavalry horses and offi cers to test their endurance, agility, and ability to get quickly between two points in the countryside. Today, in the modern equivalent, the sport of eventing encompasses three separate tests: dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. Each is scored individually but added together for the fi nal results, and the winner of the competition is the competitor with the least number of penalty points gained over the three phases. The team winner is the team with the lowest aggregate number of penalties among team members.

What is Canadian Eventing?Canadian Eventing is a committee of Equine Canada responsible for the sport of Eventing in Canada, from the domestic development to the international elite level. Canadian Eventing is governed by a committee comprised of 12 members, including two rider representatives. All activities of Canadian Eventing are administered by this committee via 5 sub-committees with the support of technical manager Fleur Tipton, who is based at the Equine Canada offi ces in Ottawa.

CORE OBJECTIVESThrough it’s Strategic Plan, the Canadian Eventing Committee is committed to programs to achieve the following Goals:

1. A higher standard of performance excellence demonstrated by Canadian athletes and Canadian

teams at national and international competitions and championships.

2. A team podium performance at the 2012 Olympic Games.

3. A broad and diverse foundation of athletes that enjoy and compete safely, competently and equitably at world class standard national and international sanctioned eventing competitions, in all provinces across Canada.

4. A clear development pathway for competitive athletes supported by a system of trained and certifi ed Eventing Coaches and Offi cials who are committed to excellence through ongoing professional development.

5. A vibrant and viable economic and business model which supports the organization.

Canadian Eventing has a number of important and exciting national programs to support grass-roots, developing, high performance and elite athletes. These programs include:

• Canadian Eventing Athlete Development Scholarship Program

• National course review and standardization for competitions

• Provincial Domestic Athlete and Course Development Support Program

• Sports Science Support Program • National Team Training Program• Eventing NCCP Coaching Certifi cation Program

Formed in 1998, the Elite Riders Association (ERA) is an association dedicated to representing and promoting the views and interests of event riders in Canada. The ERA membership is comprised of all high performance Eventing athletes, including short-listed and long-listed riders.

As the voice of the Canadian Eventing Team’s national listed riders, ERA maintains two athlete representatives on the High Performance Committee of Canadian Eventing, the national governing body for the sport of Eventing in Canada. This Committee oversees all high performance activities, including planning and administering the National Team Program, hiring of the Technical Advisor, development of selection criteria and the selection process, and hiring of competition sports science support personnel. The ERA membership is also responsible for voting on the appointment of two of the Team selectors. Communication within ERA keeps riders updated with regards to policy-making and news bulletins of Canadian Eventing, Equine Canada, and the FEI. Currently, the ERA representatives on the Canadian Eventing High Performance Committee are Lesley Grant and Michael Winter (2004-2006).

Birthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:Langley, British Columbia May 6, 1977 Langley, British Columbia

Hawley Bennett grew up on a hobby farm and was involved with the 4-H Horse Club and the Grove and Langley Pony Club. With Livingstone, a thoroughbred gelding bred by her neighbour and purchased as a four-year-old,

Hawley formed a truly incredible partnership. Following a fourth place fi nish at the 1998 North American Young Riders’ Championship, Hawley, then 21, was named to the Canadian Eventing Team Long List.

In 2002, Hawley and Livingstone were the only pair to post a clear show jumping round to fi nish 14th at the CCI*** Fair Hill International and, the following year, enjoyed a clear cross-country performance at the prestigious CCI**** Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event. In the fall of 2003, they were members of the Silver Medal Team at the 2003 Pan American Eventing Championships and Hawley’s Olympic dream became a reality when she and Livingstone represented the Canadian Equestrian Team in Athens, Greece.

Hawley credits her groom, Stacey Thorson, the never-ending support of her mother, Gerry, and her coaches, Pam Arthur and Buck Davidson, for her success. Hawley currently trains in Temecula, California.

A n d r i n aCalder

Birthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:Toronto, Ontario May 13, 1988 Toronto, Ontario

Andrina Calder is one of Canada’s fastest rising stars. Just weeks after celebrating her 14th birthday, Andrina claimed the CCIY* division of the 2002 Bromont International Three Day Event in Quebec. The venue would prove

to be a lucky one for Andrina, as she returned the following year to claim both Individual and Team Gold Medals in the CCI-JY* division of the North American Young Riders’ Championship.

An extremely successful 2004 season saw Andrina enjoy a top 20 fi nish in her CCI** Radnor Hunt Three Day Event debut, and culminated in Andrina being named the USEA’s Area I Young Rider Intermediate Champion. Andrina’s international success to date has come riding HerzPrinz, her American Trakehner gelding. She is now also competing successfully with Heraclea, an American Trakehner mare, at the preliminary level.

For the past six years, Andrina has trained with 2004 Olympic Team Bronze Medallist Darren Chiacchia at Independence Farm with locations in Buffalo, NY, and Ocala, FL.

K y l eCarter

Long ListedBirthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:Calgary, Alberta January 8, 1969 Sparr, Florida

Riding since he can remember, Kyle grew up on his parents’ thoroughbred racing farm. Interested in show jumping as a teenager, Kyle trained with Albert Kley at the famed Spruce Meadows facility. At 18, he turned his focus to

eventing and spent one year training in England with 2004 Olympic Champion Leslie Law.

After returning to Canada, Kyle started up his own business of buying and selling horses off the Calgary racetrack. He eventually moved his business to Kentucky, where he stayed for three years. It was while competing at the prestigious Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event in 1996 that Elaine Davies spotted his talent and offered him the position of resident rider at her Hawkridge Farm where Kyle was based until 2003. Partnered with Davies’ Scotia Gold Rush, Kyle enjoyed a second place fi nish at the 1999 CCI*** Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event and went on to represent Canada at the 1999 Pan American Games.

Currently developing a large string of horses, Kyle is now based in Sparr, Florida, where he manages a training facility. Married to American event rider, Jennifer Carter, Kyle enjoys sailing, skiing, running and windsurfi ng when he is not busy riding.

Short and Long ListedBirthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:Victoria, British Columbia April 10, 1971 Victoria, British Columbia

Sonya Crampton’s riding career began like that of so many others - by taking lessons on a bratty Shetland pony! Since her fi rst experience in the Pony Club as a six year old, Sonya has become an accomplished equestrian

She is currently competing at the advanced level with two thoroughbred geldings. Smooth Sailing is a former steeplechaser that completed the CCI*** Fox Hall in 2004 to earn Short Listed status while Shindig II, a New Zealand-bred gelding, fi nished 29th at the 2004 CCI**** Rolex Kentucky in order to be Long Listed. She also has high hopes for two young up-and-comers, Top Hat and Gorgeous George, who are currently competing at the preliminary level.

Sonya has her Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages, specifi cally Italian and Spanish, and enjoys reading and dancing when she can fi nd the time.

Short ListedBirthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:Burlington, Ontario August 13, 1982 Grand River, Ohio

At a young age, Katie excelled in the sport of eventing. She twice represented Canada at the North American Young Riders’ Championships, winning the Individual Bronze Medal in 2002. The same year, Katie was the highest placed

young rider at the CCI** Radnor Hunt Three Day Event, fi nishing eleventh with Lord Ledgerwood. It was a feat she would repeat in 2003 riding Mr. Freeze, when she placed tenth.

Katie achieved Long List status with the Canadian Eventing Team for the fi rst time in 2002, and is currently short listed based on her fi nish in the CCI*** Fox Hall Cup in Georgia riding Mr. Freeze, who she imported from New Zealand in December of 2002. Katie credits several people with her success. Her parents, Leslie and Butch, and her younger sister, Jacqui, also an avid event rider, have been very supportive of her career, as has her coach and mentor, two-time Canadian Olympian Bruce Mandeville, who has guided Katie from the preliminary to advanced levels.

A doctorate student of human chiropractics, Katie currently pursues her riding career at South Farm, an eventing facility in Middlefi eld, Ohio.

The story of Michelle’s top horse is a special one. She and her father bred Benneton themselves, his dam being one of their thoroughbred mares. Benneton carried Michelle to victory in the 2004 CIC* Stonehill Horse Trials in Orangeville, Ontario, and, that fall, placed 36th at the CCI** Radnor Hunt International Three Day Event in Pennsylvania to earn a place on the Canadian Eventing Team Long List for the fi rst time.

In addition to Benneton, Michelle will also be competing with Mr. Milo, who she purchased as an unbroken three-year-old, and Kid Rock, who was also three when she purchased him off the racetrack.

Michelle works as a trainer, specializing in problem horses and starting youngsters. She played three years of college basketball, and also enjoys volleyball, roller blading and running.

Long ListedBirthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:Toronto, Ontario February 15, 1983 Orton, Ontario

A natural athlete, Trish was also a ski racer until the age of 18 when she had to choose between pursuing a competitive career in skiing or riding. In what Trish says was an easy decision, riding won out and as soon as she completed

high school, she headed to Florida to be a working student for well-known American event rider, Ralph Hill. Trish continues to spend the winter months in Florida, now receiving help from fellow Canadian, Kyle Carter.

Trish’s top mount is Amadeus, who she purchased as a four-year-old when she was 14. After eight years together, Trish and ‘Deus’ attempted their fi rst two-star competition at the 2004 CCI** Jersey Fresh Three Day Event, placing tenth and earning Long Listed status with the Canadian Eventing Team. Her other partner is Gemini Gal, who Trish purchased off the track as a four-year-old. In 2004, the pair began competing at the intermediate level and Trish is hoping to do their fi rst two-star together this year.

Trish is currently studying Animal Biology at the University of Guelph. When she is home in Ontario, she spends a lot of time teaching her own students and Pony Club kids.

Long ListedBirthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:Scarborough, Ontario October 22, 1988 Port Perry, Ontario

It would appear that Waylon Roberts, the oldest son of Canadian Eventing Olympians, Ian Roberts and Kelly Plitz, has inherited a talent for riding. At the age of 14, he represented Canada at the 2002 FEI Children’s Final for show jumping

in Brazil, and has twice represented Canada at the North American Young Riders’ Championships in eventing.

In 2003, Waylon rode Paleface to victory in the preliminary division of the Bromont Three Day Event before leading the Ontario Team to a fi fth place fi nish in the CCIJ* division of the 2003 North American Young Riders’ Championship, also held in Bromont, Quebec, where he also placed sixth individually. In 2004, Waylon and Paleface were named as the sole Ontario representatives for the CH-CY** championship division at the North American Young Riders’ Championship. In addition to Paleface, Waylon is also working with Frosch, meaning ‘Frog’ in German, and the equitation prospect, Raisin.

Waylon is based at his family’s Dreamcrest Farm and enjoys working around the farm and helping with the construction of cross-country jumps. A student at Port Perry High School, Waylon was also a former competitive diver, having competed at the provincial level.

Short ListedBirthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:Bermuda April 14, 1960 Caledon East, Ontario

Garry Roque began riding for Canada following a successful eventing career representing Bermuda which included appearances at the 1990 World Equestrian Games in Stockholm, Sweden, and the 1991 Pan American Games

where he was a member of the Silver Medal Team riding Casemate.

Although Garry has lived in Canada since he was a teenager, he only obtained his citizenship in 1997 in the hopes of earning a spot on the Canadian Eventing Team. In 2004, that dream came true when Garry made his Olympic debut in Athens, Greece, riding Waikura, a New Zealand import owned by Gustav Quast.

While Garry has a string of talented horses, he has high hopes for Hakuna Matatta, a thoroughbred-Hannoverian cross that he and the owner bred themselves.

Garry was named the Ontario Leading Male Rider of the Year in 2000, 2001 and 2003.

J e s s i c aRuppel

Jessica Ruppel is a rising star on the Canadian eventing scene. She attended her fi rst international competition in 2003 at the North American Young Riders’ Championship held in Bromont, Quebec, where she enjoyed a sixth place

fi nish individually in the CCIJ* division.

Her partner is Naughty by Nature, a cute but mischievous little horse that she began riding as a three-year-old on behalf of a client. Jessica and ‘Chance’ quickly formed a bond, and Jessica became his new owner in the fall of 2003. She has been the Ontario-bred gelding’s only rider, and does tend to spoil him with his favourite treats, including licorice and mints.

After spending six years working at Checkmate Equestrian Centre, Jessica is now based at Glenarden Farm where she is coached by Phillippa Bate and Jay Hambly. She credits her parents, David Ruppel and Suzanne Noble, and her brother, Justin, for their continued support of her equestrian pursuits. She enjoys reading, hiking, camping, canoeing, swimming, running, biking, and music, and is currently taking a distance education course with the University of Guelph.

K a r lSlezak

Birthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:Toronto, Ontario December 14, 1981 Tottenham, Ontario

Karl Slezak began riding at the age of seven, and achieved his ‘A’ level with the Canadian Pony Club. At the age of 16, he became interested in eventing and began working with Canadian Olympian Garry Roque.

Having competed at the 2002 North American Young Riders’ Championship, it was Karl’s 17th place fi nish at the 2004 CCI*** Fox Hall Cup, highlighted by a strong dressage performance and a clear cross-country jumping round, that allowed him to meet the qualifying criteria for the 2004 Olympic Games. His top mount is Private Ryan, a Dutch Warmblood gelding that Garry purchased as a fi ve-year-old. With a reputation for being diffi cult, Private Ryan became Karl’s ‘project’, and the two have formed a strong partnership. Karl has ridden the mischievous gelding from his fi rst competition to the three-star level.

In addition to Private Ryan, Karl is also riding Foxwood Spencer and Simon Says. Karl will also campaign Rather Well, a black thoroughbred stallion he has been working with for fi ve years, for owner Janette Leask. While Karl’s riding and teaching schedule does not allow him much spare time, he does enjoy skiing and fi shing.

Birthplace: Birthdate: Hometown:King City, Ontario November 9, 1959 Cookstown, Ontario

Anne Zander began riding as a teenager, but abandoned her equine interests to start a business and buy a home. Anne returned to riding in her thirties and, in 1993, entered her fi rst event at the pre-training level on a borrowed

horse and won! That was all it took to hook Anne into the sport.

Dr. Broom was purchased that fall, and the pair began competing in 1995. After a few diffi cult years and lots of help, Anne and Dr. Broom fi nally clicked. In 2001, 2003 and 2004, the pair was named to Canadian Eventing Talent Squad and, in 2005, achieved Long Listed status.

In 1999, Anne founded Cedar Peaks Enterprises and purchased Boogaloo Brushing Boots, the supplier to the Canadian Eventing Team. Anne is married to Claus Zander, who competes at the training level. The couple operates Cedar Peaks Farm, a training facility that boasts more than 50 cross country jumps, a stadium jumping arena, and a 20 x 60 dressage ring. They are dedicated to education and host several clinics each year as well as a combined test show. When Anne can fi nd time away from her horse-related activities, she enjoys working on the rebuilding of a 120 year old farmhouse, motorcycling, snowmobiling, skiing and swimming.
