New York Mulch Manufacturer Isnt Horsing AroundNot far from the crowded city streets in

New York, in the suburbs surrounding themetropolitan area, horsepower doesnt referto engine power, but actual horses. Andunlike the buses and cabs that fill the citystreets, the waste left behind doesnt come inthe form of gas and fumes, but solid drop-pings that need to be properly disposed of.Strict zoning regulations and limited

acreage makes disposal of the manure a bur-den on the animal owners. In many cases, theowners have to pay to get rid of it. Enter Sweet Peet of New York, manufac-

turers of 100 percent organic mulch that ismade from horse manure and the beddingfrom horse stalls. Sweet Peet sends outtrucks all across the region to collect horsemanure, which is brought to its facility inPawling, N.Y., where it is stockpiled, turnedand aged until it turns into high-qualitymulch material.Michael Divitto and Joseph Yankowich

own Sweet Peet of New York, which givesthem the manufacturing rights and distribu-tion rights for Sweet Peet in New York Stateand the New York Metropolitan area. SweetPeet mulch is sold nationwide.

Piled HighOn the Pawling, N.Y., site, several 50-ft.

(15 m) tall or larger stacks of material repre-sent piles of Sweet Peet mulch in variousstages of aging and composting. When materials first arrive at the facility,

the horse manure and related straw or saw-dust is put into the first stack and is occa-sionally bulldozed or turned to enhance theaging process. Much like fine wine, the olderthe product gets, the better it gets, the darkerit gets and the less offensive it smells, according to Divitto and Yankowich. When the product reaches a given level of

aging it is moved to a new pile where fluidsthat drained off the pile during the agingprocess are collected and reapplied to thepile. This gives the future mulch its own nat-ural coloring, which is very resistant to fad-ing, unlike wood chip mulches that are artificiallydyed and fade over time.

Moving the MulchBecause the manufacturing of Sweet Peet mulch

is very equipment and labor intensive, Divitto andYankowich own a large fleet of equipment, includ-ing several stacking/conveying systems, screeningplants, soil shredders and quite a number of piecesof Komatsu equipment that they have purchasedfrom Pine Bush Equipment.Over the years Divitto and Yankowich have

developed a strong working relationship with PineBush Equipment. We really appreciate the entire package of sup-

port that we receive from Pine Bush Equipment, said Divitto. Their pricing is fair, their service isexcellent and the support that we receive from our

Pine Bush Equipment representatives isunequalled. Believe it or not, the job that we ask from

our equipment at times is under extremeconditions. The entire process that we dogenerates a tremendous amount of heat. Inthe summer time these machines are work-ing in the hot summer sun and moving amaterial whose temperatures can exceed 200degrees. On top of that, in the early phases ofproduction, before the product has started toage, it is a very dusty, dirty atmosphere with

fine particles that get inhaled into all parts of the equipment. The operations are particularly severe for the dozers. The

entire unit is running across the surface of these extreme tem-peratures. The product is light in its early phases and whenbeing pushed oftentimes the pile exceeds the height of theblade. As the material tumbles back over the top of the blade, the material falls towards the engine compartment on thedozer. The radiator in particular very quickly gets loaded upwith dusty, dirty material that clogs everything, which willover time affect the operation of the dozer and create allkinds of difficulties. The combination of dirt and heat is veryrough on our machines. Our equipment is moving every day and we cannot

afford downtime. One extreme example of Pine Bushs serv-ice is that we had one particular circumstance where twodozers failed simultaneously. Pine Bush was able to get bothmachines up and running for us on the same day.

Upgrading EquipmentTwo years ago Pine Bush Equipment approached Sweet

Peet about a new dozer design being released by Komatsu, the model D61PX-23. The machine was being mar-keted as having many new and exciting features, thecore of which was the new Tier IV engines. The feature that really had Divitto and

Yankowich excited was that the cooling system, including the radiator and fans, was being movedfrom the front of the engine compartment to behindthe cab of the tractor. This meant that the problem ofdirt being pushed up over the blade of the tractor andbeing sucked up into the cooling system on the pre-vious model was now largely eliminated. Additionally, sensors had been put into the fans

and radiator area, which detect when dirt and dustaccumulations have become heavy and the coolingsystem is not operating properly. When this occursthe fans reverse themselves, effectively blowing outand cleaning the entire radiator area. This feature alone was so exciting for Sweet Peet

    see MULCH page 96

The first Komatsu D61PX-23 delivered to an end user in North America arrived atSweet Peet of New York on Aug. 21, 2012.

    Sweet Peets older model D61PX.

(L-R) are Joseph Yankowich, Sweet Peet of New York; MichaelDivitto, Sweet Peet of New York; Jim Boniface of Pine BushEquipment; and Greg Fiori of Komatsu.

Jim Boniface (L) of Pine Bush Equipment gives Michael Divitto anexplanation of the improvements made in the Komatsu D61PX-23undercarriage.

National Attachments Announces Plans for the FutureParents often share a common

dream: to be able to prepare theirchildren for the future. Scott and Kathy Guimond have

taken steps towards ensuring theirsons success: theyve given themshares of their company.National Attachments was found-

ed 23 years ago in 1989 as a special-ty company amongst a myriad offirms that service the construction, demolition, recycling, heavy high-way, forestry, municipal andpipeline industries.Scott, who had six years experi-

ence selling earth moving equip-ment in the state of Maine, startedthe company, along with Kathy, afterhe observed that there was a tremen-dous demand for specialized attachmentsand very few experts in the field. Most traditional equipment distributors

are primarily focused on selling the equip-ment and the attachment is pretty much anafterthought. Contractors involved in spe-cialized areas of work such as demolition, pipeline work and recycling were increas-ingly making tremendous investments in theattachment at the end of the stick. Theinvestment particularly in hydraulic attach-

ments and demolition attachments is signifi-cant and the customers were looking forsomeone to expertly guide them through thatpurchasing decision. With that simple con-cept in mind, National Attachments wasestablished. The Guimonds became the dealer/distrib-

utor for a wide variety of attachment manu-facturers from across the world. After aboutsix years in business a company by the nameof NYE in Toronto, Canada, came to Scotts

attention. NYE was making highquality excavator and loaderattachments for the Canadian mar-ket that were quite literally over-built and over-engineered. In somecases the equipment was beingbuilt to be virtually indestructible, according to Scott. After doing some investigating

I contacted Jack Nye, the presidentand founder of the company. Ifound that they made every type ofattachment available, includingthumbs, grapples, buckets, pulver-izers and stump harvesters; alldesigned for extreme duty andpriced very reasonably. Aftermeeting with Mr. Nye we foundthat they had no distribution out-

lets in North America. We signed an agree-ment with them making us their exclusiverepresentative, and the rest is history.

The Next GenerationEleven years ago Scotts son, Gabe,

joined the company and five years ago ScottII also joined the family business. InSeptember of this year Scott and Kathymade the decision to make Gabe and Scott IIpartners in the company.

It was just the right time to do this. Ourchildren have survived the test of fire in thisindustry. The economic depression for theconstruction industry that started in 2007was a nightmare for our company. Scott andGabe invested their blood and demonstratedtheir loyalty throughout a very difficult timeperiod, said Scott. Since joining our company Gabe has

focused much of his energy and has gained atremendous understanding of the demolitionindustry. He is now serving the company asvice president of demolition products. ScottII has done much the same within theforestry industry and he is now serving thecompany as vice president of forestry prod-ucts and acquisitions. Acquisitions is a new part of this indus-

try that we really focused on over the lastfew years. Thousands of pieces of construc-tion equipment attachments were virtuallyunused or placed off in the side of the yard ofcontractors during the recession. Many ofour customers desperately needed to gener-ate revenue by selling off inventory. For thelast few years he has focused on acquiringthat excess inventory and selling it here inNorth America as well as abroad. For more information, visit

Pat Buchanan Talks ElectionStrategy With UTCA Members

Virtually every year, Penn-Jersey Machinery sponsors the luncheon keynote speak-er at the annual Utility & Transportation Contractors Association Convention andTrade Show. This year, appropriately enough, Pat Buchanan, former Reform Partypresidential candidate and famed political commentator, offered his thoughts andstrategies of the rapidly approaching election. Here, just before he addressedattendees, Buchanan (C) took a moment for a photo with Bob Briant Jr. (L), UTCAchief executive officer, and Walt Joachim, president of Penn-Jersey Machinery.

Investor Carl IcahnPlans to Offer $3Bto Buy OshkoshNEW YORK (AP) Billionaire investor Carl Icahn plans to

make an unsolicited bid for truck maker Oshkosh (OSK) thatvalues the company at almost $3 billion. Icahn said he alsoplans to nominate his own slate of directors in a bid for con-trol of the company. The activist investor said Oct. 11 that he will make a ten-

der offer worth $32.50 per share in cash, a 21 percent premi-um over Oshkoshs latest closing price.Icahn had sought seats on the board unsuccessfully last

year. He said management has taken a passive attitudetoward the companys future and wants it to be more active. He said he already owns about a 10 percent stake in the com-pany.Oshkosh asked its shareholders to take no action on the

offer until the board reviews it. The company said its boardwill advise shareholders of its position within 10 businessdays. The company, based in Oshkosh, Wis., makes fire and

emergency vehicles, commercial equipment like cementmixers and natural gas tankers, military vehicles like tacticaland assault trucks, and access products including scissor lifts, towing equipment and aerial work platforms. It reported$6.13 billion in revenue in the first nine months of its currentfiscal year.
