Recreational Opportunities:Located west of Colorado’s Front Range, the North Fork Ranch is surrounded

by seemingly infinite recreational pursuits out the back door. Enjoy the

scenic splendor of the Pike National Forest, which is comprised of 1,110,482

acres located in the Front Range and Mosquito Mountains. With some of the

most spectacular scenery in Colorado the ranch offers direct access to both

Mount Evans and Lost Creek Wilderness areas, which account for more than

140,000 acres of the forest. Mounts Evans, Bierstadt, Democrat, Lincoln,

Cameron and Boreas are on the forest, as is the most famous peak of them

all: Pike’s Peak. The magnificent Pike National Forest’s terrains range from

14,000-foot peaks to the South Platte River. Trails punctuate its wilderness,

leading to year round recreation on ski resorts and trout fishing in crisp

streams. In near-perfect daily summer temperatures, the Pike hosts alpine

forests, mountain meadows and among its many trees, the oldest living tree known to man, a bristlecone pine more than 4,000 years old. Pike National Forest

encompasses the upland watersheds for the North and South Platte River systems. These systems provide water for the metropolitan areas along Colorado’s

Front Range. In fact, nearly 60% of the Denver metro area gets its water from the South Platte River.

Within 90 minutes, the Breckenridge Ski Resort offers exceptional alpine skiing for all skill levels from the novice to the expert looking for challenging

terrain. Summers offer hiking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, shopping and fine dinning. For unsurpassed hunting opportunities at over 10,000 feet,

South Park is Colorado’s high plain and is home to large elk, deer and Bighorn sheep herds. With plentiful wildlife both on the ranch and in the surrounding

forest, North Fork is a hunter’s dream.

In addition to horseback riding and fishing, guests enjoy sightseeing trips to the spectacular scenery of the Continental Divide, South Park, Georgetown

and Breckenridge. World-class white water rafting is available within a short drive on the famous Arkansas River. The sheer amount of recreational offerings

within 1-2 hours drive of the ranch is remarkable: fishing, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, skiing, zip-lines, jeep trails, antique hunting in numerous

charming mountain communities and more. Rarely are ranches with such rich recreational offerings so close to the conveniences of a major metro area, truly

the best of both worlds in terms of quiet respite and convenient access.

Recognized as the preferred trophy trout fishery to President Dwight D. Eisenhower and widely regarded

as some of the premier fishing water in Colorado, the North Fork of the South Platte offers exceptional

angling opportunities for rainbow trout in a gorgeous setting worthy of such an opponent. Recognized

as an Orvis-Endorsed Lodge and Fishery in 2009, the North Fork Ranch offers approximately ½ mile

of completely private, exceptionally productive trout habitat. The river has been enhanced by creating

numerous structures to retain and recruit trophy trout.

Quite literally a stone’s throw from the lodge, the North Fork of the South Platte

River offers line-ripping excitement in a sunny, canyon style setting. The boulder

work in the river provides excellent riffle-run structures, ideal for high-sticking

nymphs deep for lurking trout. And for the budding young anglers, a 1-acre river

fed stocked pond offers a family-friendly venue to help develop a passion for the

next generation.

For the fly fishing enthusiast who is always hungry for more, the South Park area

provides public access to miles of premier trout water as well as several notable

reservoirs teeming with massive resident trout. South Park is renowned for its

productive trout water; over 50 miles of public streams have been designated Gold

Medal trout fisheries by the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

The most noteworthy of the live water fisheries nearby is the heavily trafficked

stretch of the South Platte between Spinney Mountain Reservoir and Elevenmile

Reservoir, often referred to as the “Dream Stream” for its numerous large fish that

move into the system out of Elevenmile. Each fall, nymphs drift through deep

pockets producing 10-pound browns during the late season spawning runs.

The South Platte River above the reservoirs is accessed via the Tomahawk State

Wildlife Area and offers excellent fishing for wary resident brown trout that spend

morning and evening feeding, aggressively seeking shelter in the deep undercut

banks by day.

For the stillwater angling enthusiast, Spinney Mountain Reservoir, Elevenmile

Reservoir and nearby Antero Reservoir offer excellent wade fishing, boat and float

tube access for trophy trout. Spinney is the prominent fly fisherman’s target because

of the excellent aquatic insect population, the massive brown trout and the pods of

rainbows, well over 20 inches that cruise up and down along the face of the dam.

History:The history of this ranch goes back to the early 1900s and was named for the section of river that runs through it, the North Fork of the South Platte River. At one

time, it was the home of the National Organization of Wild American Horses, preventing the destruction of wild horses and burros on open lands that were about to

be developed. The animals were brought in for care and then put up for adoption. Many of these horses and burros are still in the area today. The ranches historical

buildings include the Homestead Cabin built from local logs in 1910 and the Stonehenge Lodge built in 1941. This phenomenal home was built in a southwestern

style with imported marble floors, log vegas and a stone façade.

Highway 285 was first developed as a trade route through the mountains to Santa Fe, New Mexico via stagecoach. In the mid-1800s gold and silver were discovered.

The railroad came to the North Fork Valley in 1879, and it ran directly through the ranch. The black earth can still be seen in the railroad bed behind the lodge.

Since the 1880s the North Fork Valley attracted tourists for the cool weather, excellent fishing and beautiful scenery. President Dwight D. Eisenhower is reported

to have said that the North Fork of the South Platte was his favorite river for trophy trout fishing. To learn more about the history of the North Fork Ranch go to
