NORTH EAST WEEKLY The closure of the Tullos processing plant in Aberdeen is ‘deeply disappointing’, says NFU Scotland. Muller UK & Ireland confirmed that it will close its processing plants in East Kilbride and Aberdeen, with the loss of 255 posts from the sites, affecting 43 dairy farms in the north east. NFU Scotland has been working with Muller UK & Ireland since the company’s initial announcement of its restructuring plans at the end of March to action a feasibility study by Opportunity North East to look at securing a viable future for dairy farming in that area. As detailed by Muller for those wishing to continue their contracts with Muller, a 1.75 pence per litre transport charge would be applied for the non-aligned and co-operative producers, to move the milk to Bell-shill, near Glasgow, for processing. The Union had called on Muller to pull the haulage cost plans, to no avail. Jean McLean, NFU Scotland’s Milk Committee representative for the North East commented: “The announcement by Muller to close its Tullos plant in Aberdeenshire is deeply disappointing and could impact the viability of the dairy industry in the north east of Scotland. NFU Scotland has been working to reach a resolution since the original announcement and will continue to work with Opportunity North East which will continue its work on the feasibility study. There is still full co-operation for the feasibility study to be completed, with full support of NFU Scot-land, and will seek to give options to producers.” Graeme Kilpatrick, NFU Scotland’s Milk Committee Chairman commented: “We are still awaiting answers to several questions we have posed to Muller in recent weeks. NFU Scotland has asked that if the need arises for the milk to go elsewhere other than Bellshill who will foot the bill and if the transport charges will be in-troduced to other areas of Scotland too. The transport costs should have been discussed with all those supply-ing Muller from across the UK as there is the possibility that these charges could be implemented more widely. “The Union previously spoke with the Scottish Government about investment in the dairy industry in Scotland and attracting inward investment to increase the processing capacity. NFU Scotland will take up these discussions with the new Cabinet Secretary Fergus Ewing in due course.”

Air Weapon Surrender Campaign Police Scotland has welcomed the public's response to its

Air Weapon Surrender Campaign, as it announced the

number handed in during the first week, and displayed a

number of them prior to destruction.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Williams revealed the

number of weapons handed in to the 72 designated

stations from Lerwick to Stranraer in the first week alone

is 2301.

He said: "This is a fantastic start to the three week

campaign. It's great to see so many weapons being hand-

ed in and I'd like to thank responsible members of the

public for surrendering them.

"Remember there is still two weeks left to run and I'd like

to appeal to anyone who possesses an air weapon and doesn't intend licensing it to hand it in to one of the

designated 72 stations across Scotland.

"You can find out all you need to know about the surrender campaign on our website."

Justice Secretary Michael Matheson said: "I had the opportunity to meet with Police Scotland staff last week

and see some of the weapons that have been taken off our streets. It is extremely encouraging to know that so

many air weapons have been handed in by people who do not plan to have a licence when the new law comes

into force at the end of the year.

“I would encourage anybody with an air weapon to stay on the right side of the law by handing them in during

the surrender process or, if they wish to keep them, making sure they apply from 1 July 2016 for the right to

own an air weapon.”

Uncovering Aden Country Park’s lost history –

archaeologists attempt to solve a mystery The Book of Deer Project has for several years been carry-

ing out archaeological work to help understand the early

development of the village of Old Deer in Aberdeenshire.

The project is named after the Book of Deer which is one

of Scotland’s oldest and most important manuscripts now

housed in Cambridge University Library.

The book was apparently in the possession of an early

Pictish monastery at Old Deer circa 1100 AD and it is

thought to have been made there too. This monastery has

otherwise left no trace of its existence.

However during the search for the monastery several other

sites have been found and this year’s dig hopes to uncover

more information about these sites, and maybe, just maybe

uncover the monastery itself!

During a 2015 dig archaeologists uncovered a T-shaped

building 23.5m long and circa 7m wide with an extension

6.5m wide. The wall foundations are constructed of large

stones and some small stones, substantial enough for a

large 2-storey building.

In places the large foundation stones have remained above

ground. These large stones may have formed the seating

for an Episcopalian meeting house.

25m to the west of the first building is a rectangular

building with similar construction methods as the T-

shaped structure, and it has a stone floor surviving in the

east room, with at least one room partition dividing the

building into two rooms. The room with the stone floor may possibly be for animal use.

It is hoped this year’s excavation will date the building, and help answer the question of who built it and when,

and what it was used for

Alison Cameron, Archaeologist directing the project, said “We don't have any direct dating for these buildings

but a Charles I/II bawbee came out of soil inside the T-shaped building, but there were also finds from

prehistory to the 1970s!

Bruce Mann, Archaeologist for Aberdeenshire Council, said “There is a reference to a ‘lost tower house of the

Keiths’ who once owned all of the Aden estate and surrounding land. If this is a late medieval building,

possibly the lost House, then that would not rule out the stones being reused over the site as a mid-late 18th-

century meeting house. It’s certainly a great chance for the local community to help solve a mystery.”

Students from Aberdeen and Edinburgh Universities, local volunteers, and members of the Book of Deer

Project will work with professional archaeologists during the two weeks on site.

240 primary school pupils will be taking part on the 7th-10th and 13th June, the Enhanced Learning Unit from

Mintlaw Academy on the 14th June, and other pupils from the Academy between the 14th -17th June. The

pupils will be helping to uncover the rectangular building which has not been seen in full for several hundred

years. They will learn archaeological techniques and handle and identify any finds.

Aberdeenshire Museums Service from Mintlaw will attend the dig on 13th June and bring a selection of local

finds for the children to handle.

This year’s project is funded by Aberdeenshire Council Archaeology Service and hosted by The Book of Deer

Project.

Visitors are welcome to the site which will be signposted from Aden Country Park car park and café. The

excavations will run from 6th -19th June 2016. Volunteers are welcome and full training will be given.

SNIPEF appoints new Chief Executive SNIPEF Chief Executive, Robert Burgon retired from his

post at Federation’s Annual General Meeting on 27 May,

he is succeeded by Mrs Fiona Hodgson, SNIPEF’s former

Head of Finance and Membership Services.

Mr Burgon has worked for SNIPEF for 38 years. He

joined the Federation as Assistant Industrial Relations

Officer in 1978 following his graduation from Heriot Watt

University. He went on to become Director and Secretary

in 1988 and Chief Executive in 2011. Robert played a crit-

ical role in the conception and establishment of many of

the plumbing industry’s leading bodies and schemes

including BPEC, Sector Skills Councils, Summit Skills

and WaterSafe.

Robert has represented SNIPEF and the plumbing industry

at international level through his involvement in the

European organisation for plumbing and heating

contractors and his work with the World Plumbing

Council, where he was appointed to the Executive Board

and became Chair in 2011. He was instrumental in the set-

up of World Plumbing Day and was admitted to the Wor-

shipful Company of Plumbers in 2004 where he is cur-

rently serving as Renter Warden.

Mrs Hodgson is a Chartered Accountant with over 20

years’ experience. She was born and educated in Dundee

and after gaining a degree in Accountancy at Dundee

University trained as a Chartered Accountant in Edinburgh

with Deloitte where she worked in non-profit, public and

private enterprises. Fiona joined SNIPEF in 1995 as

Finance and Administration Manager and in 2014 her role expanded into Membership Services.
