Children and parents are being asked for their views on improving the public play parks on offer in Aberdeenshire. A consultation has begun as part of a review of children’s play parks aimed at providing the best quality play areas in the best locations with the money available. It will include a series of public meetings and presentations and feedback can also be given in an online survey. There are currently 446 council play parks across the council’s six local areas. Key elements to be addressed in the review include: equity and location of provision, play value, condition, safety, funding models, partnership working and maintenance and replacement regimes. Around £550,000 is spent every year on managing and maintaining local facilities owned by the council. Over half that sum is required to ensure the sites are adequately inspected and repaired. This includes a thorough annual safety inspection to identify risk levels, overall conditions, Play Value and defects. The remaining budget is available to fund upgrading and replacement of existing equipment. However, costs associated with the purchase and installation of new equipment are substantial and the current budget gives limited opportunity for major improvements. Typically the replacement, or addition, of a set of swings with required safety surfacing will cost around £5,000. To refurbish a medium-sized play park with around ten items of equipment costs in the region of £75,000. The review will look at current play park provision and gather the widest possible view on the existing play park portfolio as a whole, and on individual sites. The aim is to develop a strategy which delivers the best possible portfolio of play parks in communities across Aberdeenshire. Head of Roads and Landscape Services, Philip McKay, said: “We’re keen to ensure that the investment we make in our play parks meets the long term needs and aspirations of our communities.” The council’s Director of Infrastructure Services, Stephen Archer, said: “We genuinely want to hear from as many people as possible, those who use the play parks in particular. These facilities have the capacity to help improve children’s learning, health and fitness as well as making our towns and villages more attractive places to be and we want to make sure they’re meeting the needs of residents and visitors.” Schools’ pupil councils will also be included in the consultation to try to ensure as many young people as possible are able to say what they think. NSPCC Scotland is calling on people in

Aberdeenshire to get together to create a

fabulous, creative or unusual lunch on

Wednesday 17 September as part of its UK

-wide Big Packed Lunch initiative, and to

donate the money they would otherwise

have spent on a "same old, same old" lunch

to help fund its ChildLine Schools Service.

Whether you stage a fancy lunch with

cucumber sandwiches and scones, a

children’s meal with jelly and fish finger

sandwiches, or an indoor picnic, the idea is

simple – pick a date for your lunch, invite

your guests, make sure they all bring some

delicious food to share, make a donation to

the NSPCC, then gather round and get

stuck in! For anyone who feels like adding

a bit of competition to their lunch, hosts

could encourage their guests to blind-taste

each other’s dishes and rate them ‘Come

lunch with me’ style.

and we want people to have fun with the

together to share their lunch goodies, and at

the same time raise vital funds for the

NSPCC. We hope that lots of local people

will take part on 17 September, but if

anyone wants to stage a lunch on another

date that’s fine too!”

The money raised through Big Packed

Lunch will help to fund the NSPCC’s

ground-breaking ChildLine Schools

Service, which uses trained volunteers to

deliver age-appropriate workshops and

assemblies to 9-11 year olds in order to

educate them about abuse, how to protect

themselves, and where to get help if they

need it.

NSPCC research shows that, on average,

two children in every primary school

classroom have suffered abuse or neglect. However,

whether it's through fear or lack of information, children

are not seeking help or telling anyone what's happening

until they are much older.

Between January 2012 and June 2014 the ChildLine

Schools Service carried out 161 school visits across

Aberdeen City and Shire and has spoken to approximately

7,917 children. But with a total of 227 primary schools in

the area, which the service aims to visit once every two

years, there is still a lot more to be done.

Andrew continues: “With the support of local people we

can visit every primary school in the region and give

children the confidence to talk about abuse and the

courage to seek help if they ever need it.”

With a major Scotch Lamb promotion due to be launched this

month, NFU Scotland’s latest look at supermarket shelves has

shown that they are finally starting to fill with Scottish produce.

While the vast majority of retailers in Scotland are now 100 per-

cent stocked with Scottish or British lamb, the switch away from

imported produce to home-produced new season lamb in some

stores has been disappointingly slow and, in the case of Asda, is

still far from complete.

NFU Scotland found substantial amounts of New Zealand and

Australian lamb still on supermarket shelves in July – despite

significant numbers of Scottish lambs coming forward to the

market. The situation had significantly improved by August

with only Asda still stocking a significant volume of old season

lamb from New Zealand and Australia. Recent statements from

the retailer suggest that the switchover to 100 percent home-

produced lamb will happen soon.

In a few weeks’ time NFU Scotland, Quality Meat Scotland and

the National Sheep Association will embark on a joint Love

Lamb initiative which will see an unprecedented, united PR push

behind Scotch Lamb.

NFU Scotland’s Food Chain Policy Manager, Kylie Barclay said:“Recent shelf watch results have shown that some retailers have

been disappointingly slow to switch over to British and Scottish lamb. Ample supplies of Scottish and British product have been

available since June but as late as July this year, many retailers - Asda, M&S, Sainsbury’s and Tesco - Continued Page 14

Attempted housebreaking - the Merkland Road East area, Aberdeen Police Scotland are appealing for witnesses following an attempted housebreaking within the Merkland Road

East area of Aberdeen on Thursday 14 August. The incident is believed to have happened between 5.30pm

and 9.30pm and officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed or have any knowledge of the

Management information detailing crimes and offences

and for each local authority area is published on Friday 15

August. The Q1 Management Information report covers

the period from 1 April to 30 June 2014 and is part of

Police Scotland’s commitment to greater transparency in

that most retailers have made the switch to Scottish and British

product is good news for our Love Lamb weekend later this

“Whilst August’s results are more encouraging than previous

months, it doesn’t mask the fact that this move could and

should have been made by the retailers sooner, given that there

was plentiful supply of good quality Scotch and British lambs

available from June this year.

“It can be done. There were retailers – Aldi, Lidl and Morri-

son’s for example - who were stocking 100 percent Scottish or

British lamb back in June and Scottish farmers congratulate

those retailers for their solid support this season.

“More importantly, these retailers exhibit a year-round com-

mitment to British or Scottish which seriously questions why

other retailers feel the need to abandon local supply for signifi-

cant parts of the year.

“However, at this time of year, there can be no excuses for the

creeping presence of old season New Zealand or Australian

lamb taking up valuable shelf space in some Scottish

stores. This is peak season, and the presence of imported pro-

duce destabilises the normal marketing of Scottish lambs when

they are at their best. That undermines all the hard work that

Scottish farmers put into getting their fresh, tasty home-grown

lamb into the marketplace at the right time.

“Our farmers take great pride in how they rear their lambs. We

have a great product to sell and a great story to tell and that is

part of what the forthcoming Love Lamb weekend is all

about.”

Helping to prevent drownings

across Scotland will be the focus

during the first meeting of a water

safety group set up to prevent trag-

edies in the country.

Scotland’s Water Safety Reference

Group, established by the Royal

Society for the Prevention of Acci-

dents (RoSPA), will meet on Mon-

day (August 18) to discuss the

way forward and how best to im-

prove water safety in Scotland.

Hosted by the Scottish Fire and

Rescue Service, the event will take

place at Perth Community Fire

Station where the latest Scottish

drowning fatality data will be dis-

cussed.

Last year, there were a total of 56

drownings and water-related

deaths in Scotland alone, accord-

ing to data from the National Wa-

ter Safety Forum (NWSF).

A new water safety document enti-

tled Water Safety Policy in Scot-

land - A Guide, which sets out key

information to enable local author-

ities to create a localised water

safety policy, will also be present-

ed during the meeting.

The event will be attended by

about 15 local authorities as well

as numerous other organisations

including The Scottish Communi-

ty Safety Network, Loch Awe

Watch, The Royal National Life-

boat Institution (RNLI) and Police

Scotland.

Carlene McAvoy, RoSPA’s com-

munity safety development officer

for Scotland, said: “Improving

water safety will be the group’s

main focus and through this meet-

ing we hope to share our

knowledge on areas of local best

practice in order to improve water

safety across Scotland.

“It is a sad fact that a total of 56

people drowned in Scotland last

year, and hundreds of people

drown in the UK each year so

ways that we can prevent tragedies

will be at the top of our agenda.

“Scotland’s Water Safety Refer-

ence Group was established to

help reduce water-related deaths

and educate people about the dan-

gers of swimming in open water.”
