N ewly appointed Executive Director Roger Guen-ther reported volume increases in all major cargo catego-ries helped drive the Port of Houston Authority beyond the 3-million-ton and $20-million operating revenue benchmarks in January, giving the Port Authority a healthy start for 2014. January’s tonnage figure was 15 percent higher than the previous year.
A contributor to that January figure was 400,000 tons of steel handled, yielding a 36-percent increase at a time when steel numbers were expected to be flat due to a leveling off of drilling activities.
Bulk cargo of 1 million tons was 30 percent higher, fueled by strong performances in coal, grain and petcoke. Over-head expenses were down 10 percent compared to Janu-ary 2013, contributing to a $9 million bottom line of cash flow.
Port Commission Chairman Janiece Longoria announced that the latest U.S. Census Bureau data shows that Texas led the nation in exports for the 12th consecutive year in 2013. The Port of Houston has been the state’s No. 1 ex-porting port for each of those years. (Taken from the PORTREPORT Feb/Mar 2014)
