We have been able to provide a nice smile or a wave as a welcome to all our students and their families. It is also nice to see it returned! Teachers have been working very consistently to plan and prepare key learning for our students over the last few weeks and as a result, all of our students should be proud of them- selves for geng back into their school roune as quick as they have. We have been seeing some amazing changes in the year one students wring standard. I have had the luxury of seeing some of the Breaking Newsyear one work. Noosaville State School Newsletter

Thank you to all of our families who have continued to support the school restrictions based on COVID-19. At this stage, we only allow staff and prep-year1 parents enter school grounds. Parents need to AVOID all physical interactions with staff and other parents. Prep-year 1 parents will need to drop off and pick up their children in an efficient manner. Adults should not use any seating or facilities (toilets) in the school. Teachers will be unavailable during this time to discuss your child. All communication is preferred via email or phone. Thank you to our families for demonstrating patience around pick-up times. We have a very busy section of road for two schools and with the changes regarding restrictions, it has made parking and pick-ups a bit more challenging. We thank you for your patience. Our ACE (Accomplished, Compassionate, and Empowered) Music program survey has commenced. This will provide the school with an interest level to enable the school to devise the program for term 3. Auditions for Year 4-6 students will occur in term 3 week 1. There will be limited spaces to start with as we build the program to be a sustainable music program for our school. To register your child’s interest, read more on page 4. Have a wonderful week.

Mike Hobson Principal

Families please be aware that Sea Eagle Drive has a 40km speed zone, at all times. Not just during school drop off and pickup hours. School zone speed limits and signs The crossing is a pedestrian crossing. This means that drivers must give way to pedestrians at all times. Not just when the school crossing signs are out. Sharing the road with pedestrians

It is illegal to use your mobile phone while driving. Driving and mobile phones

Student safety is so important to us. Here’s a few tips to make STOP DROP GO safe!

1. Do not leave your car to prepare your child for the day – if you wish to take the time

to do this please use a parking space.

2. Please move along as far as you can in the stop drop and go area before stopping to

let your child out – be conscious of the traffic backing up behind you.

Writing In year 1 this term, we have commenced a ‘Literacy Hour’ program at the start of each day, with a focus on developing students’ phonological awareness, and applying this into their reading and writing. All staff involved, including Mr Hobson and myself, have been delighted not only with the progress being made by students, but also with their level of engagement and enjoyment of the learning process. Congratulations to all the year 1 students for their efforts and well done to all the staff who have supported this program. It is very exciting to see the improvements in their spelling, reading and writing!

Secondary School Enrolments for 2021 Whilst the Crest and transition programs are currently on hold, with new dates to be confirmed next term, enrolments for 2021 at both Sunshine Beach High School and Noosa District SHS are still being processed. For Sunshine Beach SHS, the first round of enrolments are due this Friday 12 June. Enrolment information can be found on the SBSHS website or can be collected in person from the front office. https://sunshinebeachhigh.eq.edu.au/enrolments/enrolling-at-our-school Sunshine Beach SHS plan on posting their ‘Yr 7 2021 Virtual School Information Presentation’ Video to the website too. Enrolment forms for Noosa District SHS should be completed and submitted asap and enrolment interviews to be held in term 3 can be booked by contacting the school: 07 5480 8111.

Virtual Assemblies The ‘virtual assemblies’ have proved popular with students and our student leaders have been learning new skills as they present in this new format. Mr Hobson and I are visiting classes to hand out merit certificates and it has been impressive to note the number of students showing great care for their learning. This week, we have the pleasure of presenting a significant number of students with certificates for attaining 50 GOTCHAS! Well done to all of these students who have reached this milestone by demonstrating they care for themselves, others, their learning and their school.

We are very excited to announce the NSS ACE- Music Excellence Program. This is a free ARTS program that will provide opportunities to develop students’ musical talent and interest. The beginner to advanced program enables a student to learn an instrument to play in the school’s own rock band at concerts, assemblies, community events and for personal enjoyment. The program will be offered before and after school as well as some during school time throughout the week.

Grief and Loss: Loss touches all of us throughout life yet its existence is generally not recognised unless in extreme cases such as death or divorce. However every time there is a change in our life we potentially are experiencing a loss and with that, can follow grief if it is not recognised and acknowledged. Thus for children with the change of a school, introduction of a new sibling, returning to school after learning from home, death of a pet, parent separation, parent death, family breakdown or loss of a precious toy are but a few changes children can experience and so can and do have some sort of impact on a child’s mental health and wellbeing. Being provided with truthful information, including children where possible and providing loving support is important. The psycho-social development of a child is also likely to determine a child’s grief responses. So while a 10 year old is likely to experience and process a loss differently to a 5 year old due to their differences in cognition, life experiences and language development this is not always necessarily so and so not always clear cut. How we adults manage this loss will also impact how a child manages the grief of that loss. To support our children through these challenging times, it is important we take care of our own wellbeing – easier said than done, I understand. Keeping trusted friends and family close is important for those rough days and asking for help is all ok. Our School Chaplain facilitates a program called “Seasons for Growth”. This program focuses firstly on the acknowledgment of a loss and then with the use of the metaphor, seasons of the year, there is a focus on change and strategies for self-care within that change thus strengthening a child’s social and emotional development. Be active or ‘doing’ helps a child engage and process what is happening for them. For example plans to acknowledge anniversaries or making a memory box are healthy ways to deal with grief. Dianne and Mal McKissock are well renowned Australian practitioners and authors who have published a number of resources use-ful for families. Some titles include: The Grief of our Children, Dianne McKissock, 1998 The Magic of Memories, Dianne McKissock, 2012 (picture story book) Coping with Grief, 5th edition, Dianne McKissock and Mal McKissock, 2018 Wishing you and your family well both physically and mentally. Kind regards

Junior and Senior Athletics Carnivals As you are aware, we are being guided by QLD Health and Education QLD with their 2020 Operating Guidelines for Queensland State Schools and base our decisions on their recommendation. As a result, I will need to run trials for students born 2010, 2009 and 2008 prior to our athletics carnival, so that we have a team ready for the Noosa District Athletics Carnival. In weeks 8 and 9 this term, students born in the above-mentioned years, will be invited to participate in trial days, with the sole purpose being to select a school team to compete at the Noosa District Athletics Carnival. Only students interested in attending the Noosa District Athletics Carnival should attend the trials. I am not sure how long each age group will take at this stage, so arrangements will need to be flexible. The following sessions in weeks 8 and 9 will be available to run the trials: (2008 students have already commenced and any events not able to be conducted in weeks 8 and 9 of this term, will be held over until Term 3).

Monday: After lunch Tuesday: Morning tea and lunch Wednesday: Morning tea and lunch Thursday: Morning tea and lunch Friday: Morning Tea and after lunch

I am hoping to conduct our regular Junior and Senior Athletics Carnivals later in Term 3 when there are no restrictions on event numbers. This will be an opportunity for all children to participate. Age Champions will also be decided for 2011, 2010, 2009 and 2008 students at the Senior Carnival – not at the trials conducted in weeks 8 and 9. I will attempt to confirm the dates of these two carnivals prior to the end of Term 2. Unfortunately, for the trial sessions in weeks 8 and 9, we cannot have family members on site to support our students….my apologies for this.

Representative Sport The cancellation of all representative sport, including District, Regional, State, National and International until 30 June still applies. Our Noosa District Athletics Carnival is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 4 August (Week 4 of Term 3). It falls into Stage 3 of the Roadmap to Recovery, where a maximum of 100 people will be permitted to gather, so again, I am not sure how this carnival will look at this stage or even if it will go ahead. Stay tuned…..

Senior Sports Day

Sports Captains Big shout out to our 2020 Sports House Captains who have been doing a sensational job in their role so far this year…….I’m sure their good form will continue into the rest of the year. Their set up each Monday morning and pack up each Friday afternoon is a time consuming job, yet they work so well together to get the jobs done efficiently…thanks Kiara, Darcy, Baylee, Lenny, Mischa, Jaymie, Annabelle and Alexander.

Touch Football Activity Consent Forms for the All Schools Touch Football Carnival on Friday 18 September will be sent home next week to students who returned an Expression of Interest Form in Term one. Please return by the due date.

Sports Shirts Another round of sports shirts orders will be taken up until Friday 24 July – Week 2 Term 3. If you are interested, please complete the attached order form and either pay in person at the canteen or return the order form to Cholena via email. At the moment the shirts are taking a bit longer to manufacture so we are hoping that this next round will be delivered by Week 2 or 3 of Term 4. We will let you know as soon as they arrive. There will be one final order taken towards the end of Term 4 ready for the 2021 school year.

Extra-Curricular Activities At this stage, extra-curricular activities will re-sume in Term 3, with Karate/Self Defence, Dance Fit, Golf, Mountain Biking and Running Club. Look out for the survey monkey that will be emailed towards the end of this term. Surfing will commence at the very beginning of Term 4 - not quite so dark and cold in Term 4 for our early starts.

Year 3 and 4 Mountain Biking Some good news – the final session from Term 1 Year 3 and 4 mountain biking will go ahead on Friday 19 June from 2:45 to 4:00pm. Students are to meet at the sports shed and we will wait with them at the end of the session at the bus shelter…..unless the easing of re-strictions in Stage 2 allow an alternative.

Senior Sports Day

Skipping Ropes Each year level now has a set of skipping ropes to share between classes and it has been so good to see many classes out using them. Big thanks to Dave, one of our groundsmen, for fixing all the skipping rope racks to the walls in the teacher preparation areas. Studies have demonstrated that skipping helps to develop the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This assists in improv-ing awareness, reading skills, memory and mental alertness. There are also the obvious benefits of increased fitness, coordination and balance. If you don’t have one at home, a skipping rope would make an ideal gift for the next birthday or at Christmas!

Surfing Rash Shirts Ahhhhh – not so squeezy any more! The new rash shirts have arrived and yes……I have some larger ones that won’t send our surfers blue through lack of circulation. I am really looking forward to the recommencement of surfing early in Term 4.

Storage Container The refurbished shipping container should have arrived or soon will this week. Thank you again to Jason, Dave and our wonderful office staff for facilitating this purchase.

Senior Oval Shade Covers The supplier has been finalised and work will start on replacing all four shade sails soon. I can’t wait for this to be completed and thank you again to all our families for your amazing 2019 fundraising efforts with our Colour Fun Run – the fruits of your labour will be up soon for all to see.

Shade Sail Seating Area Quotes have now been returned and will be passed onto the P&C for discussion. It is only through the amazing fundraising initiatives and hard work or our P&C that we could even be thinking about improving this aspect of the school. Big, big thanks to the P&C for all that the committee members and school community do to support our students and infrastructure.

What our Noosaville Students Get Up To: Don’t forget to send me any information or photos of what your children have been getting up to. Know it’s a bit tricky at the moment with so many community sports not able to commence, but I am happy to publish any physical activity stories. Supporters Thank you to our generous sponsors/supporters of our sports program.

Breakfast club Breakfast club will start up again on Monday the 8th June. We will be running it out of S block as we have in the past however it will run a little differently to the past as we have to take extra precautions but please let our child know they are welcome to attend if needed.

Hampers Please let me know if you are in need of a food hamper. I have access to a few and would like to assist those that I can who are in need. I am at school 5 days a week so just phone the office and they can put you through to me for a chat. Also “The Hub” food outlet on the corner of Eumundi and Beckmans road offer very cheap and also some free food/groceries so to help your dollar stretch further it is definitely worth making a visit.

Lunch time activities I run activities in the hall every lunchtime, Monday, Wednesday and Friday is colouring for year 1-6 and Tuesday and Thursday is games for grades 3-6.

Every Friday afternoon the Prep children have some time to play outside, exploring gross motor and fine motor activities, and collaborating between classes. They look forward to it every week. Last week we built train tracks, painted and chased bubbles in the wind.

‘Game On’ for Future Game Designers After completing their unit on forces, Year 4s have put their learning into making games. As part of the Design Technology element of the unit the children used contact forces (push, pull, friction) and non-contact forces (gravity and magnetism) to create a game to be included in a 60 Second Slam Game Arcade. This week it was ‘GAME ON’ in the training room of the library, where the children put the games through their paces. Basketball, mazes, golf, air hocky, Foosball and ping-pong ball challenges. It was all about the degree of difficulty. Some games were two player, while others use skill and balance. For Ms Carroll it was all about the luck. Once designs were tried and tested, it was time to put them to the vote. The results will be on show at the STEAM Day in August. Well done Year 4. Year 4 Teachers
