D ear Noda Members, Can you believe that August is

here? I think I was just complaining about the cold weather and the slow start to summer, and now it’s more than half over. I like to use my letter to thank people and to let you know about things that we hope will be of interest to you. As I write this month I am surrounded by mosquitoes in Canada. This is an annual trip so that hubby can go fishing. He supports my horse habit all year and only asks that I accompany him to Canada and be eaten by biting, flying insects for two weeks each year. I don’t really have a problem going, but I do hate missing NODA’s recognized shows every year. That being said, we have such a hardworking committee and crew of volunteers that I don't worry about the shows. I am always sure that everything can be controlled and will be handled. Thank you! You are all wonderful and so appreciated. Thank you to Show Manager Robyn Ambrose, John Ambrose and Grand Haven Stables, Show Secretary Mary Lou Gallagher, NODA VP and Show Chair Niki Sackman, Volunteer Coordinator Karen Eisenhauer-Shirring, and all the volunteers who gave of their very valuable time. NODA is an organization of volunteers and we will not continue to exist without hardworking and generous volunteers.

I hope you are planning to attend the clinic with Janet Foy on how to create a musical freestyle being held at Rockin’ K Ranch in Ravenna on Saturday afternoon, August 30th. As of this writing, rider spots are available! Janet will be at Rockin’ K all weekend (Friday through Sunday) for a dressage clinic. Please go to our website, www.nodarider.org to see the flyer, and rider and auditor forms. You can also read about Janet Foy and the events of the whole weekend in this month's NODA News. I am certain that you will find the entire clinic educational as well as fun. Please join us for all or part of the weekend. This is going to be a great learning experience for both riders and auditors. We are still looking for a DJ to cover the musical freestyle portion of the clinic. Please let us know if you know someone who would be able to come and work from 1:00 to 4:40 pm on August 30th. This is a paid gig. Contact information is [email protected] or [email protected].

The show season is already winding down. Our Recognized Shows are over and we are more than half way through the Schooling Show Series. Remember, we added a category for professionals to the schooling show championships this year, as well as to year-end awards. However, results thus far don’t show much of an increase in participation from our pros. This is such an inexpensive opportunity to get your young or inexperienced horse out, or use it as a tryout for the new level that you are working on before heading to the recognized shows. We hope as we go forward more professionals will take advantage of our schooling shows. I am so sorry to announce that Mosie Welch, half of our newsletter co-editing team, is leaving her position as Co-Editor. Mosie will be greatly missed as a member of this very successful team. She has a new grandchild and her life is very busy, so

spending more time with her family is a priority. Mosie teamed up with Elizabeth Bross three years ago and has continued to enhance the newsletter with interviews and lots of educational content. She and Elizabeth also expanded the team, adding members Sharon Lewis to do review and editing, and Jill Voigt to handle classifieds. Mosie brought lots of new ideas and structure to the NODA News and her input and ideas will be missed very much. We are looking for someone to fill her big shoes. Please consider this opportunity if you would like to contribute to the continued success of the NODA News. Interested members please contact Mosie at [email protected] or Elizabeth Bross at [email protected] for more details and information about this position.

It is confirmed that we will host the Instructor Certification Refresher Workshop on October 25th and 26th. The workshop is not yet full, and anyone who has attended the workshops with NODA or elsewhere is eligible and encouraged to be a PI in this refresher workshop. Please contact Marcia Doyle, [email protected] or Berni Moauro, [email protected], if you’d like to

participate.

Great stuff in this month's issue of the NODA News, including the wonderful story by Linda Henderson, "The Story of Rugged Elegance; the Find of a Lifetime." A success story in more ways than one, it is a terrific read, so don't miss it. Also in this issue is a very nice and informative article about Legacy Equestrian written by Regina Sacha. So if you don't yet know, you are about to find out about this facility, which was purchased last winter by Jim Enger and Dr. Dawn Donich. Marcia Doyle, Berni Maouro, and I went for a visit and had a little tour of a really big facility. Speaking of Legacy Equestrian, NODA will have our open meeting there on September 14th. The meeting will feature a tour and a talk/demonstration by Mosie Welch, who owns and operates Equestrian Pursuits, LLC, Equine Massage. More information will be available on our website. Save the date. Have a great August!! Dee Liebenthal, President

Legacy Equestrian Center. New Legacy Begins!Legacy Equestrian Center. New Legacy Begins! by Regina M. Sachaby Regina M. Sacha--UjczoUjczo

A t the corner of Sherman and Caves Roads in Chesterland, Ohio stands an impressive

142-acre farm enticing passersby to dream of Kentucky Blue Grass Country. Aptly named Legacy Equestrian Center, this palatial horsing facility is “horsing home” for the Enger family and provides a warm and welcoming multi-disciplinary prime horsing establishment for passionate horse people as well.

Formerly a premier breeding and training establishment for race horses, “Eutrophia” farm was built two decades ago by the prominent Alexander family. Eutrophia’s legacy will forever remain but a new LEGACY has begun…. Prompted by the desire for daily and all-night pasture turnout for their personal horses, Jim Enger and his wife, Dr. Dawn Donich prevailed in a bidding auction in October, 2013 against four major developers all anxious to build homes upon this hallowed land. Taking possession in December, 2013, Jim and Dawn, along with their four children, (Austin, Justin, April and John), and their two dogs, Tiffany and Ruger found themselves sitting atop a heap of snow with empty stalls, no workers and a few personal horses! Jim is a hands on go-getter and no stranger to strategic visioning and business management. Owner of the very successful EngerTire Centers, Jim immediately began recruiting workers and soliciting boarders. This was quite a daunting task as Ohio headed into a deep freeze and one of the coldest and snowiest winters in decades! Dawn, a prominent Radiologist, is also undaunted by challenge and known for her brilliance, vivacious smile and infectious laughter. Together, they effectively and quickly recruited Barn and General Managers and a team of quality and committed workers. Boarders came trickling, then pouring in. By mid-March, they had secured three leading trainers bringing in strings of horses and boarders from Florida winter training. The Engers exceeded their capacity goals by filling 71-stalls before Summer of 2014!

Legacy is currently summer training home to USET Dressage Trainer, Nancy M. Smith and MaryAnne Milleman of Equisential, Inc. Esteemed Grand Prix hunter/jumper trainer Megan Bash, owner of Cleveland

Equine also occupies an entire section of the main show barn. Jenna Hoy is also a prominent hunter/jumper trainer at Legacy. General Manager Ted Joseph is an experienced Manager and life-long friend of Jim Enger. He works diligently in his Show Barn Office and takes time to listen attentively to boarder questions and requests. Taking care both of horses and owners is a priority of Legacy. Ted’s office overlooks the massive 80 x 200 heated indoor arena but he has little time for horse gazing. He is frequently seen at the farm seven days a week, insuring that all “the bills are paid, clients are happy, and things are running smoothly!” Barn Manager Holly Roskos was very excited when she learned of Jim and

Dawn’s Legacy purchase. “I knew it was time to make a career change to help Jim and Dawn fulfill their dream of having the finest stable in the area.” Holly contributes a wealth of horse knowledge with over 26 years of horse management experience.

Legacy Equestrian Center is expansive, with six different barns and eight residences. The entire 142-acre farm area is fenced in. There are 27 grass pastures providing ample turnout for 71 horses. The Engers have retained all the former barn names, (Show Barn, Stallion Barn, Sherman Barn, Caves barn, Foaling and Trail Barn). The three stall foaling barn (complete with heated floors and a closed-circuit TV system) was built in 1900 and was used in February, 2014 to deliver two fillies. The proud sire “Magnum Graduate” is a 3.6 million-dollar winner. Jim personally delivered his first foal on February 27th during a massive snow storm! This is definitely a facility for everyone from trail and pleasure riders, hunters, and show jumpers as well as dressage enthusiasts! The Engers are demonstrating that horsing disciplines can co-exist wonderfully together and even cross pollinate ideas and exchange horsing knowledge and experience.

Legacy Equestrian Center amenities are vast and feature heated tacks rooms; 2.5 miles of manicured woodsy trails; a 3.0 furlong sand track; a six-horse EuroXciser; a 200 X 140 sand out-door arena; a heated and manicured 200 x 80 indoor arena with a mixture of fibar and sand footing;

automatic Nelson heated waterers in stalls and pastures; and four heated wash racks. There is even a pond with a walk-in sand ledge if you wish to swim your horse! Additionally, a climate controlled lounge with full view of the indoor arena is complete with Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV, kitchenette and full bath and shower. Socialization and relaxation is encouraged for boarders and guests. There is a laundry room and large fenced in “dog paddock” where dogs may frolic and play. Staff is on-site 24 hours a day and security is further enhanced by a 24 hour surveillance system.

Dawn has referenced Legacy as “a family affair” providing a place where her family gathers together for “work, riding and fun.” “I truly treasure the time we can all spend together here as a busy family” Dawn states. Jim has dedicated himself full-time to this endeavor after selling his Enter Tire Centers to Mr. Tire. It has become “my new career and hobby all wrapped together” Jim states with a glint in his eye. Jim is also a car racing enthusiast but most days he is busy building the new Enger legacy! The entire family rides from time-to-time with Jim’s preference to canter bareback. However, since he is so hands-on and busy fixing all that breaks, it is rare to see him atop a horse. Dawn has ridden since a youth and enjoys her Western riding and trail fun. Daughter April is a very

talented and fearless hunter/jumper rider and has placed in National Interscholastic competitions. Recently she has become intrigued by dressage and has decided to dip her hunter/jumper foot into the dressage water by planning to compete in some NODA shows this summer. We all agree on the value of cross training. If you ever wanted to ride your horse on a race track, feel free to contact Legacy. For a small fee you can spend the day galloping and then can check if off your horse “bucket” list!

Legacy Equestrian Farm is rich in heritage and continues to provide an exceptional boarding and riding experience. A horse property which could easily been lost to land developers, the transformation of Eutropia to Legacy Equestrian Center will continue, but the spirit and essence of a premier equestrian establishment continues thanks to the foresight and courage of the Enger family. You can find out more about the Enger Family and Legacy Equestrian Center at their website, www.legacyec.com.

I t was a cold wintery day in February 2004. I was sick again and definitely didn’t feel like going to look at a three-year-old colt. But, I had promised my friend, an

equine and overall awesome photographer, Sarah Gentry of West Salem, Ohio, I would go look. Sarah had had her eyes on this horse since birth and said he was exceptional! I simply couldn’t get up any enthusiasm to buy another horse. I had just been diagnosed with a potentially deadly neurological disorder called “dysautonomia.” Basically it means your central nervous system is broken. It can have many symptoms but in my case it caused my blood pressure to be very high or dangerously low. It affected my heart, muscles, gastrointestinal tract, and the ability to regulate temperature. Over time I would have two strokes. Dysautonomia, “if” it is active, is very dangerous. I was feeling so very sick this particular day in 2004, but I had promised Sarah, so off I went.

We arrived at a small reining barn outside of Youngstown, Ohio in bitter temperatures. I opened the door and was greeted with a bellowing call from a bay horse standing in a grooming stall that was way too small for him. His ears were flattened against the ceiling but he didn’t seem to notice. His soft brown eyes were locked on me as he moved his head up and down as if saying “come here.” I walked toward him and as I got closer, his eyes never left mine. I reached out my hand to him and he nickered softly and began to breath in my scent. “OH NO!” I thought, I’m going to buy this horse! He moved his muzzle to my neck and breathed deeply. He was stunning, simply gorgeous! A registered Appendix Quarter Horse whose grandsire was the famous “Rugged Lark” out of a gorgeous 17.2 hand, English bred Thoroughbred mare. He was a good 16.2 hands, with a lovely head and neck, sloping shoulders, a solid back and good hindquarters. Firm feet and bone all over. His color was a dark mahogany, with two white hind socks and a white ankle up front with a question mark on his forehead. I was already in love! His trainer arrived and put on a western saddle and bridle and got him ready to lunge. He informed us “Reggie” had been under saddle for three weeks. I held my breath as he walked off. He had a lovely ground covering walk. Good beginning! Again I held my breath as he lunged him. No need, his trot was fabulous and canter smooth and elegant. Thus, his name: Rugged Elegance. His trainer only let him do a jog and

lope. It was painful to watch the big colt with a large stride being held back, but his manners were perfect. He was a pleaser and tried his best. “Reggie” was the same

under saddle with the trainer up. I knew I had to ride him, but because of my illness, I hadn’t ridden in two years. He was an angel and at the trot and canter I asked him to move on and he willingly did. It probably felt good to him! I walked him over to his trainer and Sarah, dropped the reins and went to get my checkbook. Reggie flew through the pre-purchase exam.

During Reggie’s first three years, very little was done with him. In the spring of his sixth year, I moved my horses to train with dressage trainer Joanne

White. Joanne could see the same potential as I had and developed a rapport with Reggie immediately. Training commenced and in his first two dressage outings Reggie’s scores were just average. But Joanne told me, “be patient, there is a great horse waiting to emerge. I just don’t know when.” By his third show and the rest of his first year at First Level he scored in the 70’s and was Champion or Reserve at each competition. No looking back.

“Reggie” loves to show, the judges love him, and the fans love him! He had to skip a large part of his second year of showing due to a freak pasture accident that carried into year three. Year three he showed lightly continuing his winning ways at Second Level. He placed fourth at the Regional Championships in USDF Region 2. Year four he ended up USDF’s All Breed Champion for the Quarter Horse Association at Second Level Open and placed sixth at Regional’s. Year five he showed Third level and was USDF’s All Breed Champion for the Quarter Horse Association and 80th overall in the nation at Third Level Open with Joanne on board. In 2013 I was riding and expected to have the opportunity to show him, but I was yet again, too sick. So Reggie was shown by a Junior and continued his winning career.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. In December 2013 we discovered I am gluten Intolerant. I am now gluten free and feel terrific. I’m also using essential oils for my dysautonomia with great success. My doctors can’t believe how well I am doing, but I can! I’m back riding Reggie, my favorite horse, and planning on showing in 2014. Rugged Elegance is certainly the find of my lifetime.

T he Northern Ohio Dressage Association with Rockin’ K Ranch will be hosting a Dressage Musical Freestyle clinic with Janet Foy on Saturday, August

30, 2014 from 1:00 – 4:30 pm at Rockin’ K Ranch in Ravenna, Ohio. Rockin’ K Ranch will be hosting a full three day clinic, August 29 - 31 with Janet Foy, that same weekend. Auditors are encouraged to attend all or part of the weekend! This is a great opportunity to get the perspective of a national and international dressage judge and USDF “L” program instructor. The afternoon Musical Freestyle clinic will feature Janet Foy working with four different riders, one each at Training/First levels through Fourth level. Each rider must have received a minimum of two scores of 63% at their level of competition at USEF/USDF recognized shows. A DJ will be on hand to play music selections and adjust music to each horse’s gaits under Janet’s direction. A freestyle program is an opportunity to showcase a horse’s strengths and Janet will aid the riders in considering their horse’s strengths and how to design the program to best present the horse to the judge. Janet has specified that she prefers to work with various breeds and types of horses over the course of the afternoon to best aid riders and auditors in understanding how to develop a freestyle program for various horse types. The Freestyle clinic is open to auditors for only $10 and will benefit riders who are developing freestyle or riders wishing to improve an existing freestyle program for their horse. In true Freestyle tradition, there will be a wine and cheese reception directly following the Musical Freestyle clinic. Cheese and snacks provided, you bring your favorite beverage! If you want a more in depth perspective, Rockin’ K Ranch is hosting the three-day Janet Foy Dressage Clinic that same weekend, August 29 through August 3. There will be riders at various levels, with different types of horses. The three day clinic is open to auditors for $30 for the full weekend, which includes the Musical Freestyle clinic OR $20 per day. Fees do include a light lunch daily. The clinician, Janet Foy, is a native of Colorado Springs, CO and has earned her USDF Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medals. She is currently an FEI “I” judge, USEF “S” dressage judge, and an USEF Sporthorse “R” breeding judge. She has judged at all major shows in the United States, including the FEI North American Young Rider Championships, the

FEI North American Junior Championships, the USA World Cup League Finals, the FEI North American Championships, Dressage at Devon, and USET Festival of Champions, as well as FEI shows in California, Illinois, Arizona, Ohio, New Jersey, New York, Colorado, Florida, Washington, and North Carolina. She has also judged national championships and CDI***/W in Guatemala, England, Colombia, Costa Rica, Barbados, Canada, Poland, Australia, and Mexico, as well as the FEI World Cup League Finals for the United States, Canada, and Australia. Janet is currently an apprentice FEI Technical Delegate, and a member of the Federation Dressage Committee, the International High Performance Dressage Committee, and the USDF “L” Faculty. She has been conducting clinics at Rockin’ K Ranch in Ohio for several years. Those who have attended always comment on what an enlightening experience the clinics are. Jack and Heidi Kohl, owners of Rockin’ K Ranch, are generously donating the use of their facilities to NODA for the Musical Freestyle clinic. Rockin’ K is located at 7967 Peck Road in Ravenna, Ohio 44266. The Rockin’ K Ranch is a thirty stall barn that features both indoor and outdoor arenas with excellent footing, as well as daily turnout for horses. You can find out more about Rockin’ K Ranch at www.RockinKRanch.com. The auditor registration form for the Musical freestyle and the three day Dressage clinic is on the facing page in this issue of the NODA News. If you are interested in attending the Musical Freestyle Clinic or attending all three days of the Dressage with Janet Foy clinic, advance registration is greatly appreciated. For updated information regarding the clinics, please go to www.nodarider.org. If you still have questions, contact NODA Education Committee co-chair, Berni Moauro at [email protected].

NODA Sends Appreciation to Outgoing Treasurer Jennifer Kick

Jennifer has served on the executive board for five years and reluctantly vacated due to time conflicts. A NODA member since 2009, she became treasurer in 2010. Jennifer loves the educational aspect of NODA and being involved with a group dedicated to horses and the sport of dressage. Jennifer was “practically born on a horse.” She states, “I was in the competition ring starting at age 3 and have not stopped yet. My mother, Elspeth Kick, was a trainer and riding instructor and ran her own boarding and training facility, so I was in it from the start. I competed in the hunter/jumper ring and Geauga County 4-H for a good part of my youth and competed in my first horse trials when I was 14. Since then I have been actively competing in combined training, jumpers and dressage.” Jennifer relates that her greatest influence in her equestrian endeavors was her mother, Elspeth Kick. Recently, Jennifer’s focus has turned to her two-year-old German Oldenburg Colt, By Design. He has started some lunging and she will be competing him in Dressage Sport Horse Breeding classes, but mostly he hangs out in the pasture! Jennifer would like to express her sincere thanks to Dee Liebenthal and the NODA Board. She really enjoyed working with everyone and hopes in the future to have more free time and to participate in some capacity.

NODA Welcomes a New Treasurer Nancy Danielson

Nancy Danielson has been voted into the executive board position of Treasurer. NODA thanks Nancy for taking on this position during the busy show season. Those members having a need to contact Nancy must text or email her at 440-759-2117 (text only) or [email protected]. Two years as a NODA member, Nancy says she has decided to volunteer as treasurer because, “we have raised and shown alpacas and I know how hard it is to get people to volunteer, plus I have booking keeping experience.” Nancy has been riding on and off since childhood, but took a break about 14 years ago when she sadly had to put her horse down. Two years ago she got back into riding and she feels lucky to have Marty, a 17 year old New Zealand Thoroughbred, schooled to 4th level. Although Nancy says she is not quite working fourth level now, she appreciates his experience. She also drives a ten year old pinto mini named Lance. Nancy looks forward to getting to know other members and helping where she can.

Michael Poulin to Donate Clinic to State That Raises Most New Donations

For The Dressage Foundation in 2014

The Dressage foundation, July 15, 2014 – Olympian Michael Poulin, Vice Chairman of The Dressage Foundation’s Board of Directors, has generously donated a 2-day clinic to the state that raises the most new donations for The Dressage Foundation (TDF) by the end of 2014.

“I have been involved with The Dressage Foundation for many years,” said Michael Poulin, “and I wanted to support and encourage all the donors who have made our work possible. I hope that many people are inspired to give, and I look forward to working with the riders from the winning state!”

At the end of the year, final totals will be tabulated to determine the state that has raised the most new donations. The figure will include fundraising events held in each state, new donors, and donations that are earmarked toward each state’s goal. The winning state will be announced in early 2015, with the clinic to follow based on schedules and Mr. Poulin’s availability. The clinic can include up to ten 45-minute rides per day (maximum). Mr. Poulin has waived the instructor fees for a 2-day clinic; travel, accommodations, and meals will be the responsibility of the clinic organizer/group.

Additionally, each USDF Group Member Organization, dressage club, or TDF State Representative who participates in fundraising for TDF during 2014 will receive a new, released in 2014, educational dressage DVD.

The Dressage Foundation encourages individuals and dressage clubs in each state to contact and work with their respective TDF State Representative. A list of State Representatives can be found on TDF’s website, www.dressagefoundation.org. "The Dressage Foundation exists to help committed riders with one of the toughest parts of dressage--Finances. The mission of TDF is to fundamentally 'up the bar' of dressage in the United States,” said Beth Baumert, TDF President. “To that end, TDF donates about $200,000 annually to people involved in every aspect of the sport: from young riders to adult amateurs, judges, instructor-trainers, breeders and high performance riders. The entire dressage community can thank TDF donors for making these grants possible. Without donors--large and small--TDF wouldn't exist. Every gift is important to TDF, and the goal for 2014 is to enlarge the TDF family of friends so we can do even more."
