Program

Welcome one and all to the March newsletter. Wejust entered the third month of this year and it stillfeels like January. I am looking forward to it beingjust a little bit warmer.

So, all of you rock hounds, what is your favoriteway to collect rocks? Looking down dirt roads, goingto a rock show? Attending a rock hound meeting. Ifound another way.

Yard sales, yes you read that right. While drivingaround over the last two weekends we came acrossa couple of yards sales. They looked like standardyard sales when I noticed a couple of rock tumblersthen a rock saw then some rocks.

So, I struck up a conversation with the owner, hisdad been a collector for years and had passed away,he was a big collector and had tons of rocks on theback yard. He was glad to show me what was in thebackyard. I was glad to see the bounty. The gentlemanwanted all this rock gone to sell the house and I couldhave what I want. Well let’s say I needed a biggertruck than what I had. So, I paid for the tools I wantedand proceeded to load what I could.

The following weekend Beth and I drove to afriend’s house then to dinner when we spotted rocksstacked up along with other tools and saws etc.Again, it was a nice haul and very cheap.

So, I have found another avenue to find the rockswithout having to drive a long distance or dig. Notsaying that digging is a terrible thing lol, but youngerrock hounds do work faster and longer lol lol.

The program for March 14th is Walton Wright. He will be presenting the subject of Today's Forest/ Yesterday's Forest Preserved. Walton Wright is adistinguished authority on petrified wood and will havepetrified samples available for viewing

Our field trip to Paula /Ocean View is coming upon March 18th so please let me know if you are goingto go. Please text me 714-342-1227 ASAP. We havespecial rates and special privileges for this trip.

NOC NEWS - March 2018 5

We are so excited to have and teach our newNOC young members "Future Rockhounds ofAmerica". They are very excited young membersand want to learn about rocks and minerals. Theyhave completed their first activity class under sec-tion "Rocks and Minerals". These youngrockhounds experimented the hardness of rocks. The second activity class "The three rock types"on February 10th was also very exciting. Theylearned about the three basic rock types (Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic). They have startedtheir rock collection on an egg carton. I Want to thank our great teacher, Don Warthen, who calmly tries to answers their unbelievable smartquestions. We always look forward to the next classto see our future smart young members. We like to invite more adult members to comehelp teach these wonderful young members. Amaz-ing how much we all learn together while we teach. We meet in La Habra on second Saturday ofeach month from 1 to 3 PM. Next class is March10th. There was no raffle – our raffle chair Beth Smithwas absent due to illness. If you would like to donatea rock to the General Meeting Raffle bring it to thegeneral meeting raffle table – someone would love towin it….

Our “BIG GEM SHOW” is right around thecorner. All members start to think about how youwould like to participate. We need all members to beinvolved in some way; this is the only way to have asuccessful show. Our “BIG GEM SHOW” is one ofour largest fundraisers, without raising funds for ournon-profit organization we would be unable to haveour club meetings, speaker s including education andJunior Rock-hound programs and so many otherwonderful things that our club provides. Rememberwe are what make our club (NOG&MS) a club, without all of us working together there would be noNorth Orange County Gem & Mineral Society.

Febrary 17, 2018

We met at Hector Road and went to collect Ag-ates and Jasper at Lavic Siding. At noon some de-cided to go and collect Christmas Tree Agate. At the new area all parked in the sand but wefound no Christmas Tree Agate. When it was timeto leave, 5 cars without 4 wheel drive go stuck.Four were pulled out and when down the hill back-wards. The fift a heavy truck without 4 wheel drivetook about 2 hours. It took 3 trucks attached toeach other to get it out. Don’t go into a sand area unless you have a

4-wheel drive vehicle and don’t go alone.

8 News - March 2018

There certanly are many new members in our NOC Gemand Mineral Club. I felt compelled to write this missivebecause I was truly overwhelmed at the effort put forth byour club members and their friends and relatives and peopleon the street we roped in to help put the federation showon. Every day I became more aware of some other aspectof planning and execution of this event. Where do westart: the advertising -- attending other community eventsto promote the show -- the articles in the local papers -- theentrée into social media advertising -- the 50 signs thatwere made to help people locate the show -- the lay-outs ofthe contents of the three buildings -- the speakers -- thechildren’s activities (and I had friends who came with theirchildren WHO TOTALLY LOVED IT) -- the offerings at thesilent action -- and the fun atmosphere around the silentauetion area. The demonstrators were diligent and skillful and PATIENT.The speaker roster was impressive, in addition we hadauthors and representatives from different organizationsand a great show offer and free magazines from Rock andGem magazine. Thursday night our club fed the dealers and ourselves. The banquet on Saturday night was completely charmingwith the fiesta theme. Once again our members were foodservers (somehow I did not expect that). Everyone therewith the club pitched in for the fastest tear down I haveever seen. (Howard did wash the 100 salsa bowls and Ihope we use them into perpetuity). The bracelets were anengaging party favor memento and the centerpieces wereso attractive people asked if they could take them to useagain for the editor’s breakfast. Club members receivedmuch deserved awards and I can’t wait to see them in thedisplay case at the community center! Our event chairman, really the team of Don and Ophelia Warthen were like thelittle engine that could and there were some steep gradesto ascend. As many of us are aware of we had serious electricalproblems in the gym but Frank Winn and his crew workedand worked and by Sat. noon “we had light”. Again onFriday, we had problems with adequate food being availablefor purchase but on Saturday and Sunday problemsresolved. One reason I am so passionate about why thismatters is the educational emphasis of this convocation. The fossil exhibits and petrified wood exhibits wereincredible, I saw a child’s face transfuse with wonder aftershe was handed a freshly sliced geode and was told, “noone has ever seen the inside of this rock before, and you

are the first.” Of course, there was a little crystal gardentucked inside and it was a perfect moment. Our dealers were often very knowledgeable and so willingto talk with attendees, eager to share their background andenthusiasm. The dealers, well selected by our dealer chair, had wonderful products and there was a nice variety ofitems so one could find huge photos of an agate slablooking otherworldly, tools, books, sunstones andmoonstones, fossils, rocks and minerals from around theworld to start or enhance a collection (even a few from outof this world.) Most of our dealers donated lovely or usefulraffle items, diamonds and intricately crafted pendants, arock hound hammer and fossils! The gorgeous plants were popular as always and mydaughter was so excited about the plant haul she made. She said she will volunteer for the club show next year. Shebought a salt rock lamp and an agate slab night light andplans to try her hand at making night lights herself. There were greeters/security at every door and if the nextperson didn’t show up people would stay until everythingwas secure. We were told there was an attempted break inbut the person was scared off by our volunteer sleepoversecurity. And finally our announcer Kathy keeps everyoneinformed with help from Bob and Randi. The raffle team worked very well together and wecommented at least 100 times that the raffle prizes that weredonated were generous and some of them stunning as well.See the picture of our grand prize winner for the amethystnecklace, Jeanne Asp almost had tears in her eyes. Ourspecial prize winner for the Sunday attendees only, AlfredAlvarado was an attendee because of advertising at thesenior center jewelry class in Whittier. The prizes donatedand/or purchased by the NOC club generated muchexcitement, dare I say “lust” by the raffle ticket purchasingpublic and it became a hang out spot as people checkedback to see if they had been a prize winner. We had the opportunity to hear feedback on regular basis, and the majority was positive, some of it gushingly so! Ofcourse there were some “helpful” comments and we willcertainly digest those at the July meeting but the overridingmessage here is attendees had a great time, learned a lot,the children had fun and began to cultivate an interest inearth sciences. We will have some new people attend our meetings, ournational affiliates were proud of us and knew how hardeveryone worked and how much we cared about it being awell planned and successful show and we all survived totell our “war stories”. I am proud to be part of this club inthis community!
