Middle School Food Drive and Pies Not Punches: The Boone Middle School Student Council in conjunction with the Boone Salvation Army will be conducting a food drive from November 2nd through December 1st. All items collected should be canned food items and/or nonperishable items and will be given to the local Salvation Army and distributed right here in Boone County. The Middles School Student Council has a new challenge for their students and families, the “Pies not Punches” Campaign. The Student Council at Boone Middle School would like to raise money that will go towards the annual food drive for families in need around the holiday season. The motto is meant to connect the goal to a positive outcome that will ultimately help the Boone community. The goal of the campaign is for students to reach a grade level fundraising goal of $100 to be able to pie one teacher or a team of teachers at the December Middle School assembly. The grade level that raises the most money and meets their goal will be able to pie multiple teachers within their grade level and *maybe* even Mr. Kelley himself. Any amount that students wish to contribute will be accepted. The money will be totaled on Monday, December 4th. Thank you for your support in this project!

Christmas in a Box: Boone High School has chosen anonymous families in need from the Boone schools to help out this Christmas season. They will be collecting donations ranging from money, gifts, christmas ornaments, lights, and even small christmas trees to create a box full of holiday cheer for them to enjoy this Christmas season. We would also like to be able to provide the parents of these students with a small gift or two. We have partnered with Boone's new iJag program and they will be providing the meal portion of our giving. We will be accepting donations through December 15th. Donations can be made at Boone High School care of Shannon Lumley. Contributions for the following students will be accepted:

● First grade girl and first grade boy ● Kindergarten boy ● Fourth grade boy and second grade boy ● 8th grade boy and girl (same home) ● Sophomore Girl and Senior Girl

Calling on BHS Speech Alumni and Community Members: This year Boone High will be hosting the IHSSA District Individual Event Speech Contest on Saturday, Feb. 24th. We are looking for IHSSA certified judges as well as Boone High alum and community members who are willing to serve as Room Chairs. Your job would be to announce each performer and be a door keeper to keep people outside during performances and keep the noise down. We also need timers who would sit in the room and watch performances and keep time and communicate that with the judge. Finally we would need people to help overwatch our Judges’ Lounge, set out food, and keep the environment upbeat and friendly when our judges get to take a break from their task of judging all of the high school performances. Additionally, if you have connections to help us make volunteer t-shirts, would like to make food donations, or anything else that might be helpful for contests, we would love your assistance. If interested, please contact Cassie Alber at [email protected]. Mitten Tree: After Thanksgiving, there will be a Mitten Tree set up in the counseling office. The Peer Helpers are collecting new mittens, hats, gloves and scarves to donate to Impact Community Action Partnership. From there, they will be distributed to needy Boone area families. A goal has been set to top last year’s generous donations of 84 total items. All BCSD students, staff, and families are invited to donate to the cause.

Congratulations to Ashton Thilges: Congratulations to 7th grader Ashton Thilges who sang in the Opus Honor Choir on November 16. Ashton was one of 720 students chosen from all over Iowa to sing in the concert.

WEEKLY QUESTION

Q: The Boone Board of Education attended the Iowa Association of School Board (IASB) Conference on November 15-17. What occurs at the convention? A: The The Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) Conference included on November 15 the Delegate Assembly with Boone Representative Jan Westrum helping establish the association’s legislative priorities for 2018 and half-day training sessions including one on school safety attended by Board Members Dr. Brian Mehlhaus, Jean Sorsen, Jan Westrum, and Supt. Brad Manard. November 16 was a full conference with educationally based keynote speakers and sessions of interest on education topics. Dr. Mehlhaus, High School Principal Kris Byam, Administrative Assistant and Public Relations Coordinator Lexi Elliott, and Supt. Brad Manard presented on Public Relations. No Longer an Options...It’s a Must. On Friday, Board President Jan Westrum attended the half-day training for Board Presidents. In addition, IASB presented the 2016-17 annual Better Boardsmanship Awards. The awards are given each year to individual board members who dedicate time and work to learning, advocacy, leadership and service projects to expand their knowledge and skills for better governance. Applicants must earn credit toward these awards. Each year the Boone Community School District has Board Members who have dedicated themselves to this learning and earned this honor. This year Board President Jan Westrum was presented the award as one of those receiving it from only 57 out of over 300 school districts (and each district has at least five board members) in the state.
