Welcometo the July-August issueof The Dialogue!

I caught the end of a feature on the radiorecently about unsung heroes; you know, thepeople who do marvellous things often in thebackground and without much credit or acknowledgement, and it got methinking about unsung heroes that we all might know closer to home. I’m surethere are lots of unsung heroes in our village – people who help to make thisvillage that we’re all lucky enough to live in that bit lovelier. There aredefinitely unsung heroes who help to produce our excellent village magazinemonth in, month out. What an excellent gaggle they are. There arecontributors and producers, artists and printers, collators and committeemembers, proof-readers and deliverers, and, of course, readers! By the timeyou read this, we’ll have had our AGM and remarked on what another greatyear it’s been for the Dialogue. So many of you seem to appreciate and valuethe Dialogue, as indicated by your contributions, your feedback, and yourgenerous donations to the annual envelope collection. If anyone would like toget involved and join our friendly committee, you’ll be given a very warmwelcome. Details of the dates and locations of our monthly meetingsare on page 2.

Of course, there wouldn’t be a magazine without content so a big thanks toeveryone who contributes. This month is another great issue. Emma Wiggsupdates us on her road to Rio, the Heritage Centre has been celebrating itsaccreditation and is planning a workshop to follow on from the successful‘Heritage of Stitching’ event, and Liz has been sharing more insights into lifeon Lady Gate Farm and the benefits of physical activity for our health andwell-being. The Scouts have been busy making the most of being outdoors, ourcover image from Jackie Q depicts summertime, and I was particularlyinterested to see memories of theDiseworth by the sea event which took placeon a particularly sunny looking bank holiday weekend in August 1995. We’venot had too much sunshine of late, so here’s hoping the sun has started to shineby this year’s August bank holiday weekend!

YourDialogue

NeedsYou!

Could you spare just a few hours a month to help contributeto the ongoing success of our wonderful village magazine? We’re looking for more Diseworthians to join the Dialoguecommittee and help out with overseeing all the advertisingthat we include in the magazine. These adverts are essentialas, alongside generous donations from villagers, we rely onadverts from local businesses to help cover the costs ofproducing the Dialogue ten times a year.

Getting involved isn’t a massive undertaking and it’s flexible,so it should be easy to fit around other commitments. Ifyou’re interested in volunteering, or just want to know more, contact Ruth, Emma or any of the other committee membersfor more details.

St Michael and All Angels Parish ChurchI still recall the moment when we moved our cats into the vicarage andthat was over six years ago! By and large this was a fairly smoothoperation. Of course, there were one or two teething problems. Why,when confronted by a cat flap identical to the one they had been usingfor the last sixteen years did they sit there in bewilderment andsuspicion and refuse to go out or in? Why, when given really cosybaskets to sleep in did they sneak into the bedroom and sleep in thebed? Some intensive cat flap training solved one problem and keepingthe bedroom door firmly shut solved the other. Oh well, I suppose theywere just cats: creatures of habit who like a bit a comfort. Mind youthey are contradictory too, for creatures of habit, they certainly like novelty. You’ve only got toput a cardboard box on the floor for a few minutes and there’s a cat inside it. Still, in the end, they settled in and did that great ‘cat thing’ of just lying around asleep in the summer sunshine inabsolute contentment and ease.

The poet D H Lawrence in his poem ‘Pax’ saw in that restfulness of cats a picture of what it islike to be at peace in the presence of God

All that matters is to be at one with the living Godto be a creature in the house of the God of Life.

Like a cat asleep on a chairat peace, in peaceand at one with the master of the house, with the mistress,at home, at home in the house of the living, sleeping on the hearth, and yawning before the fire.

Sleeping on the hearth of the living worldyawning at home before the fire of lifefeeling the presence of the living Godlike a great reassurancea deep calm in the hearta presenceas of the master sitting at the boardin his own and greater being,in the house of life.

I think Lawrence has got a good point. Maybe human beings are a bit like cats. After all, manyof us are creatures of habit yet we crave novelty. Many of us who enjoy novelty can be quitechallenged or feel threatened when our world changes and new patterns have to be experiencedand tried. Many of us do like to find that extra bit of comfort and warmth in our lives, as muchfor the soul as for the body. But I wonder how many of us can do that ‘cat thing’ of just ‘being’,just enjoying what it means to be alive in this moment in this place? As the summer draws on Ihope all of us get some time to rest, like cats do, in the warmth of the sun. And maybe in thatmoment of rest, we can just let ourselves rest in the hands of God too and just ‘be’ in his

Heritage Centre News

A Celebration Party

Cathy Philips, Chair of the Heritage Trust, hosted a celebration event to thank all those whosupported the Trust through their Accreditation process. For a small museum with smallnumbers of volunteers she said it was a great achievement and a credit to Nikki and Pat fortheir sheer hard work in satisfying the rigid criteria of the Arts Council. The museum aspectof the Heritage Centre, which was the main thrust of the Heritage Lottery Grant back in

2009, showed how the local residents ofDiseworth and Long Whatton had put theirfaith in the Centre and loaned their preciousmemorabilia for the benefit of all.

The party was attended by trustees andvolunteers and a light buffet was set out byKath Taylor. Pat and Nikki were presentedwith flowers and the many documents whichhad been provided for the Arts Council wereon display.

Presentation and Exhibition of SamplersMany thanks toall who broughtsuch beautifulsamplers to thepresentation of‘Heritage ofStitching’ eventat the HeritageCentre onMonday 6th June.Chris Watkinsfrom The Cross-stitch Guild wasvery impressedwith the varietyand age of thestitcheryprovided. Shegave a veryinteresting talk on the history of the sampler and showed examples of how the style ofsamplers changed over the years.

There was enthusiasm for making a village banner made up of different samplers and ShirleyBriggs showed us how to create a pattern for our work using squared paper and crayons.Shirley makes it look easy but those who are now practising have found it takes time andeffort!

A workshop will beannounced shortly todistribute the canvasand embroidery threadsto start people off withtheir chosen designs. There is still room formore samplers for thefinished banner andanyone wishing to jointhe work group will bemost welcome. We willthen meet at the CraftGroup in the village hallfor mutual support. Nikki Hening

Granville on the Run andHappy Hares

When the phone rings, and it isWill’s number, the request can be assimple as a cup of tea or it might bea run to the truck urgently with yourtrusty stick.

This time it was the latter, asGranville, one of our Limousin bullshad pushed open a gate and decidedto go walkabout. Will had had twophone calls to tell him that a brownbull was walking purposely down theWhatton Road as if he was on amission. Will had set off up the fieldopposite the track gateway on thetractor, and I went in the truck downthe Whatton Road looking into othergateways as I went, to see if I couldsee Granville. I got as far as themotorway bridge and turned roundand parked up. A quick chat withWill revealed that Granville was stillmissing. How could nearly a tonne ofbull go missing?

I drove back towards Diseworth andpulled up at the Second Hillsidegateway which was open, jumped outand rushed into the field. I scannedall across from one side to the other, but no sign of the bull, but what Idid see was a hare squatting in frontof me, not more than five metresaway. All thoughts of the bull left mymind as I stared at this beautifulcreature with its magnificent sandy

brown ears edged with black as itstared back at me.After what seemed like an age, butwas probably only a few seconds, thehare jumped up and ran off up thefield, to be joined by another onethat I had not noticed. Then myphone rang and it was Will to say hehad found Granville in the next fieldhaving a chat over the fence withone of the other bulls named Eric. Idrove back to the gateway where thetrack runs back to the farm, andwaited for Granville to emerge fromthe field. This he did with Will andthe dog in close attendance. Aqueue of traffic built up behind themand I stopped the traffic my end andGranville eventually wandered intothe gateway, safely back home.

As Will closed the gate behindGranville, I told him about the twohares in the Hillside. “Yes,” he said,“I have seen five up there all dancingaround each other. If they stay onthat field they should do well, aslong as the buzzards don’t spot theyoung ones.”

Apparently hares like flat opencountry, and they make well worntracks between large shallowdepressions which they hollow outfor birthing their young and forcrouching in to rest and hide from

predators. That is why this field isideal for them as it was sprayed off inthe spring and left uncultivated dueto the wet weather. Will will cultivate

it at some point in the summer, buthe will have a good high vantagepoint from the tractor, and he knowsthe hares are there. So if the youngones stay put as they can do in anattempt to avoid being seen, he willstop and get off the tractor andencourage them to move onto thecultivated ground where they shouldbe safe. As for Granville, his releasecame on the 1st of June when he wasloaded up in the trailer and takenout to join his share of the cows.

I hope the weather is kind to thehares and they raise some babies.Who knows, I may see some of themlater on in the year when I ampicking blackberries.

The story so far …..Racing well & ticking boxes.... from Emma Wiggs our Diseworth

ParalympianThe world championships came and went in a bit of ablur. We were ready to race and had spent all wintertraining hard but the fact the championships were inMay and not August meant it was all a bit too soonafter the hardest training block so far. Our bodieswere tired and the ‘taper’ into the racing wasn’t longenough to feel refreshed and ready! I did howevermanage to lay down a good performance to win myheat and progress straight to the final.

Despite feeling fatigued I managed to get some restand be on the start line in the best shape I could andnot only that, I delivered my race plan and finished aconvincing 2.9 seconds ahead of the field! It wasoverwhelming to see the progress I’ve made and alsoto know that I was able to deliver a performancewhen not quite 100% rested. It did seem odd to have been crowned World Championfor the 4th consecutive year but knowing that was not job done …. I needed to win one ofthe two Paralympics GB selection races in two weeks time on June 4th - D-Day!

Pre Selection ThoughtsPre Selection ThoughtsPre Selection ThoughtsPre Selection ThoughtsPre Selection Thoughts

The night before I reminded myself that 248 days ago I started this year’s trainingblock and I set a countdown on my phone to June 4th 2016 - our final Paralympics GBselection races.

It was just 24 hours until that race, until we knew which six British Canoeing athleteswould represent GB at the first ever Paralympic Games Paracanoe event in September. It’s a strange mix of excitement, nerves and a bit of relief that we were finally here!

I feel ‘lucky’ to be in the position to train full time with an incredible group of staff whoreally are world class and surround myself with teammates who have the same desire, passion and steely determination to be the very best they can be. But this opportunityalone would not be enough to guarantee I’m one of the final 6.

Ultimately it’s a numbers game - it’s a 200m course, fastest time wins and only oneman and one woman will go from each of the 3 classifications. We all get the sameaccess to world class facilities and coaches, we all have personalised trainingprogrammes. We’ve all had the opportunity to be better athletes and to make the boatgo faster.

You might think the six whogo are the ‘lucky’ ones. I usedto call it luck but having beenon this journey and seen whatit takes, I don’t believe inluck. I believe that hard workpays and this is why. It willcome down to who has usedthese opportunities the best. All I can do is know that for248 days I have given my all, made choices to be a betterathlete, grabbed everyopportunity, trained until I’msick, worked hard on areas Iknow I needed to improve and

that has put me in the fortunate position to know I’m ready - ready for racing andready to sit on that start line knowing I’ve done everything I possibly could to be one ofthe ‘lucky 6’.

Extract from The Diseworth Dialogue - Issue 6. September 1995

The day dawned dull and windy. As we set up the stalls in the morning we were allpraying for the clouds to clear and the sun to show through. 1.30pm came before youcould blink an eye. People were winging their way up to The Cross, some in fancy dress, some just spectators.

The ‘Yesteryear’ bus sat proud, ready to take the parade round the streets. Eventuallyafter bewildering many a passer-by, we were off. Jim Snee took prime position in hisrally car, tooting and generally causing a stir. The bus, now full of passengers, followedclose behind. Children and adults in fancy dress walked and sang their way after it.Julie Doyle was among them on her bike with trailer attachment which held her chil-dren Matthew and Hannah. A Landrover and police car brought up the rear. Peoplewaved to us from their cars and houses, some came into the garden to cheer us. How-ever the biggest surprise was when we approached the village hall and saw the hugecrowd that had gathered. The crowd seemed to thoroughly enjoy the unusual attractions. Mystic Meg was busywith her readings. The Quayside Cafe served homemade cakes whilst people boughttheir raffle tickets and played on the Treasure Hunt. The Yesteryear bus gave free ridesaround the village and even offered a take home service at the end. The cake stall washectic as usual. The Bouncy Castle and Stilts kept adults and children happy. Musicboomed out all afternoon thanks to Mik Griffin, who fought against loose plugs, fusesblowing and lack of extensions. Guy, from GDM Audio Visual Services, provided us witha wonderful ‘fat lady’ to have photographs taken with.

We would like to thank everyone who came and supported the event and indeed helpedus on the day. Thank you for all your produce, tombola, cakes and raffle prizes and toJane Goy for the pony rides and PC Graham Bowler for the police escort. You have allhelped us to raise over £380 to help subsidise production of the Diseworth Dialogue.THANK YOU!

The local cartoonist, writer and television personality, William Edward “Bill”Tidy, MBE produced this original cartoon as a post card for the day.

As might have been expected, thevillage itself was pretty tidy with mostof the rubbish being deposited inlay-bys, gateways and hedgerows bypeople passing through. It might beworth commenting on the following, however: bagging up dog poo but thenleaving it, is just as bad (perhaps evenworse?) than leaving the poo; and thephone box is NOT a litter bin though itseems to be being used as such.

We’ll be doing another clear-up inthe winter when vegetation hasdied back and it would be great to seemore people turn out to help.

Shirley Briggs

Litter PickA big “thank-you” to all those who turned out to pick up litter

HEALTH PAGEDon’t Just Sit There -Do Something! We have all heard the advice that exercise isgood for us and can improve our health, butit is not as simple as that. Doing moderateexercise such as a 20 minute brisk walk or avigorous class at the gym is of great benefit, especially if repeated daily. But what aboutpeople who do serious exercise like trainingfor a marathon or intense cycling, might theybe causing oxidative stress and producinglots of free radicals? Could short bursts ofintense exercise be damaging our DNA?

Researchers studied people who did intensetraining in the gym. After five minutes ofvigorous exercise, there was evidence ofDNA damage. They wanted to test differentfoods in their diet so they divided them intotwo groups. One group ate their normaldiet and the other group included a largehelping of watercress two hours before theexercise test. The two groups ofparticipants in the test ran on treadmills, increasing their speed until they wereexhausted. Their blood was testedimmediately afterwards and the group eatingthe watercress was discovered to have lessfree radicals in the blood than the controlgroup. The trial was extended for twomonths and at the end of this the groupeating the daily serving of watercress wasdiscovered to have no DNA damage, probably due to a large reduction in freeradicals in their bodies.

What about sore muscles after exercise, especially the type that comes on a day ortwo after? This is probably down toinflammation due to micro tears within themuscles. Muscle biopsies of athletes have

confirmed thateatingblueberries forexample, cansignificantlyreduce exerciseinducedinflammation.Another study using cherries showed that thisanti inflammatory effect can result in fasterrecovery time and a reduction in muscle painfor long distance runners.

So at the other end of the scale, what is itabout sitting about too much that is so badfor our health? It appears that not allsedentary behaviour is bad for us. Lyingdown sleeping for eight hours a day is verybeneficial. The problem seems to be sittingdown for long periods of time. A study ofone hundred thousand people over fourteenyears by the American Cancer Society foundthat men who sit six hours or more per dayhave a 20% higher overall death rate whencompared to men who sit for three hours orless.

In women the results were even worse as thestudy showed that women who sit for six ormore hours per day had a 40% higher deathrate than women who sat for three hours orless per day. This seems to apply even topeople who go to the gym before or afterwork.

Doing a workout does not protect people ifthey are sitting for long periods of time fortheir job whether it is in an office or driving atruck. This is because sitting for long periods

of time seems to cause endothelialdysfunction, or the inability of the innerlining of your blood vessels to signal to yourarteries to relax normally in response toblood flow. In addition, a healthyendothelium, the inner lining of the bloodvessels, is vital for the prevention of manyvascular diseases such as coronary heartdisease, hypertension and stroke. When you stand up and move aroundregularly throughout the day, blood flowincreases and “exercises” the blood vesselskeeping them healthy. The good news isthat if you have to sit for long periods, getting up and having a short break everyhour can have great benefits. One to fiveminutes is all it takes to give the blood

vessels the boost they need. Getting up andwalking round the office, up and down thestairs or round the garden for a maximum offive minutes is all it takes. If you have to sitfor long periods of time, it is beneficial todrink green tea every two hours, addturmeric to the daily diet and eat plenty ofgreen vegetables.

That said, the best way to keep your bloodvessels healthy is to move around andincorporate walking into your daily routine,at least 20 minutes a day, more if possible. If you have not exercised for a while startslowly and if you have a medical condition, consult your doctor.

Defibrillators: Over the past few months the Parish Council has been working on a projectto install three defibrillators within the villages of Long Whatton and Diseworth. The ParishClerk had organised quotations from the Community Heartbeat Trust and received a lot ofadvice and the Parish Council was in the position to purchase the defibrillators with the helpfrom the Long Whatton Community Association.

Meanwhile the Parish Council received communication from Harlow Bros; Harlow Bros haddecided at its last board meeting to purchase a defibrillator for their Long Whatton Factoryand thought it would also purchase another to donate to the village of Long Whatton. Insubsequent communications this idea was upgraded to donating two defibrillators for thevillage! The Parish Council is extremely grateful for this offer and would like to thankHarlow Bros for its generosity; it is very much appreciated. These will be a valuable asset tothe community.

The Parish Council is now in process of gaining permission from property holders at thesuggested locations and hopes to have the defibrillators installed in the very near future.

Guides: The ParishCouncil agreed topurchase a new tentand canopy for theDiseworth GirlGuides. This waspresented to theGuides last night byCouncillors A Cawdell(Chairman), M Hobbsand S Perkins, onbehalf of the ParishCouncil.

Overgrown Hedges:In the last edition of the magazine there was an article on overgrown hedges written by theParish Council. Although it is illegal for farmers and councils to cut hedges between Marchand July, I can confirm that for home owners it is NOT illegal to cut your own hedgebetween March and July. However, it is illegal to disturb nesting birds in that period.

Dear EditorDisgruntled OAP

I’m sure many in the village are aware that vandalism to vehicles whilsttheir “inconsiderate” owners are jetting off to sunnier climes has alwaysbeen a local point of discussion.

I have lived in Diseworth for 30 years and couldn’t wish for a quieterplace than Clements Gate. It’s not a through road by any means and is frequented bydoggie walkers heading for Long Holden more than actual traffic.

I myself was away last week and, leaving my car parked outside my house, where it spendsmost of its time, went off to enjoy a week in the sunshine. Upon my return home howeverI was dismayed and very disappointed to find that the car’s side windows and wing mirrorglasses had been unceremoniously sprayed with black paint. This mindless act was addedto by the obligatory deflation of tyres and certainly pulled a dark veil over what was, upuntil then, a lovely holiday.

I’ve never regarded myself as a “vengeful” person, or one to hold a grudge, but thanks tothe CCTV technology these days all I can say is there are clues available and maybe one dayin the future some “person or persons unknown” will awaken one morning, regret whatthey did, and sigh in dismay at the sight of all their windows duly decorated with blackbitumen paint!

I rest my case.ANON

To join in the Everyday Adventure of Long Whatton & Diseworth ScoutsContact Colin on 0845 519 8037 or

May is a funny month I find for Scouting. There arebank/public holidays at the beginning and end, usuallystraight after Easter! The older young people seem tohave exams coming out of their ear ‘oles, so it neverreally feels as if we have picked up momentum. However, I did start writing this before I have reflected

on what we have done so let’s have a look . . .

I may have spoken too soon - Beavers, that’s the 6 to 8 years olds - learnt the Green CrossCode, made catapults and cooked cancakes, that’s pancakes on old bean cans with a t-light!The best meeting however was that one incredibly hot afternoon where the Beavers and Ijust walked down the Post Office to eat ice cream in the sunshine!

Cubs are aged 8 to 10 and they have been up to sport, making fires, building shelters andchallenges towards the Cubs 100 celebrations. Yep Cubs are 100 years old this year!

Scouts, 10 to 14 and Explorers 14 to 18 have taken part in several big activities. The firstone being an afternoon at our local campsite over at the Oaks with all the people they aregoing on summer camp with. There were lots of getting to know games, silly games andspace hoppers. The weather was great and everyone participated, and from my perspective Ihad a great time!

Scouts & Explorers along with the Loughborough Network, (that’s the section for 18 to 25year olds) had a massive search and rescue operation across Bradgate Park.

So anyone over the age of 18 was sent to hide in the deepest darkest depths of the park, while the Scouts & Explorers went to find them via GPS trackers. Two hours later everyonereturned with no one found but they had walked over 6 km while searching.

So lots of sessions outside this month, which is what Scouting is all about.

Now we are on the lookout for volunteers to help with Beaver Scouts on Mondays from3.15pm to 4.30pm at the Friendship Centre, Tuesdays from 3.15pm to 4.30pm at DiseworthVillage Hall and Fridays from 4.45pm to 6pm at Long Whatton Methodist Church.

I hate to say it and I hate to use scare tactics, but if volunteers do not come forward thenthese sections will unfortunately have to close. So please get in touch . . .
