WWWWWelcomeelcomeelcomeelcomeelcome to the February Issue of The DialogueIt’s my pleasure to welcome you, dear reader, to the first Dialogue of 2016, and an equalpleasure to have been invited to write the guest editor’s letter.

As I write this in early January, we still have a soggy Diseworth. My thoughts are withall those thousands of people across the country who have been affected by the floodingwhich, thankfully, has not affected our lovely village as it did a few years ago.

When I considered a theme for this preface, I tried to think of one word which sums upthe essence of living in Diseworth. It wasn’t difficult. When I reflected on my 28 years ofliving here, one word kept floating to the top of my mind: community. Julie and I movedto Diseworth in 1987. Our two children, Matthew and Hannah, are now adults, and Ilike to think that the community spirit of living in Diseworth has helped to shape theminto the fine adults they have become. It’s a safe, nurturing, supportive place to live, andwe’ve experienced countless examples of Diseworth community spirit in action.

A year ago, Diseworth residents finally got a decent fibre broadband service. That wasachieved by a tremendous community effort, and now we’re starting to see the benefits.I’d like to talk about one aspect of those benefits: social media and how it’s reinforcingthat unique Diseworth community feel.

During 2015, I’ve particularly noticed how Facebook activity has supported theDiseworth community. Here are some examples, with weblinks provided:

facebook.com/groups/diseworthThis is the Diseworth Community facebook group. It’s steadily growing, and currentlyhas over 250 members. It’s a great place for information, discussion, photos, banter, andsharing the enjoyment of living in our village. Last year it proved its worth whenDiseworth suffered a spate of opportunist burglaries, enabling residents to shareinformation quickly and keep others informed, as well as being a conduit for informationfrom the police.

facebook.com/diseworthvillagehallEverything you need to know about what’s happening at your favourite village hall. Atrue community resource for a true Diseworth gem!

facebook.com/dialoguediseworthYes, your favourite village magazine is on Facebook! Here you can discuss content, submit items for publication, and chat about the Dialogue. This Facebook page alsohosts the Dialogue Digital Archive where, at the click of a mouse or atap on a tablet, you can read this issue, as well as back issues of theDialogue going back to 2005. And, of course the fabulous 20thanniversary issue from April 2015 is there in full, glorious colour!

Community? Diseworth has it nailed, and its residents areembracing social media to make it even stronger.

Now, let’s look forward to enjoying Spring, shall we?

- Mike Doyle, guest editor

News from Chris DugganWell, where to begin.

As many of you know, I was one of the foundingmembers of Diseworth’s own Incognosis. For 6years I gigged, danced, wore wigs and silly hatswith the other guys. But even before Incog I had acraving to be performing on the road, on the stage,in the theatre, wherever I could.

After successfully putting on a sold out show in2014 (How time flies!!) with Concert for Dad, Icould feel it calling to me again. Being under thelights and on stage in a beautiful theatre.

So that was it. I got out auditioning again.

After a 4 hour drive to Eastbourne I got my bigbreak with the ‘That’ll be the Day’ cast. Theirproducer was putting a new show together andneeded a Lead Guitarist. After what felt like only a minute, Trevor (the producer)held up his hand and said thank you, take a seat.

That was it. Not another word. I sat in one of the empty chairs in the theatre, watching the rest of the cast warm up and do their sound check. Eventually Trevorcame over to me, sat down and said, “So, you want in?”

I couldn’t believe it. I thought I’d screwed up my one shot. I couldn’t have beenmore wrong.

The 4 hour journey back was such a blur - good job my Mum was driving .... (I meanmy manager).

Starting from March 2nd, I will be heading up the cast of Ireland’s Call, The Musical, for the UK tour.

The story is set in the 1940’s about a man who travels to New York for a better life.He transitions through the 50’s and 60’s and experiences Rock ‘n’ Roll for the firsttime. For more information on the show you can check out the website:www.irelandscallthemusical.com More importantly, I’ll be having a leaving do at The Plough on Saturday 27th

February in the evening. It would be amazing to see my friends there to celebratewith me. Let’s raise a glass and celebrate together through the night. And hey, ifyou play an instrument - bring it with you! Hoping to see you soon! Chris ‘Dugz’ Duggan.

St Michael and All Angels Parish Church

Dear Friends,

2016 is a leap year. So we have an extra day in February. A wholeextra day to do something…… We could stay in bed, go out andsee friends, read a book or go for a walk or we could do somethingthat wasn’t about us but about someone else. We could earmarkthe day to do good! This Lent the theme of our prayer spaces is‘Let’s flag up KINDNESS’. It’s all about marking kindnessesreceived and kindnesses given and praying that the kindness will be passed onto to others. It’s all about the concept of ‘pay it forward’. When Benjamin Franklin lent money to helpsomeone, he would say don’t pay me back but when you meet someone who needs helppay it to them. The idea is that the good deed should not be repaid to us but that it shouldbe a launching pad for other good deeds. Of course it is probable that as goodness andkindness grows it should naturally return to us through another means!

So we have an extra day in Lent which we can reserve as a special day for doing good. Asit is Lent we may want to reserve a day a week for doing good. The problem is God couldsend us opportunities for kindnesses at any time during Lent. I am sure you can see whereI am going with this…… For we need to grasp our opportunities, if kindness is to growand flourish in our communities. God’s kindness to us is abundant and always available.“And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms inChrist Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches ofhis grace, expressed in his kindness to us through Christ Jesus.” (Eph 2:6,7) God’skindness is based on what he did for us through Jesus his Son, which was a great act oflove and sacrifice for our salvation so that we are made alive in Christ. Eternal life isrooted in kindness!

The value of kindness is often undervalued and underrated but when it is seen in the lightof God’s saving plan, we need to take notice of its value in our lives as we go forward inLent to the foot of the cross. So this Lent let us make every effort to be like Jesus and payforward to others the kindness that he has shown us, even when we have been unworthy toreceive it.

Love and Blessings

BALMY WINTER WEATHER

The exceptional rainfallthroughout December resulted inan early return of all the cattle tothe winter housing on the farm.Fields were cutting up rough ashooves sank into sodden earth andbacks were turned to the drivingwind and rain.

All field work was stopped for thesame reason. Saturated fieldsawait the plough, but not until alot of drying out has occurred, andseed corn for sowing sits in the dryin big bags. When the weather isdry or just a bit showery, scrapingout the muck from thepassageways in the two big cattlesheds and all round the concreteyards is a relatively easy job. It isa different matter when there hasbeen a lot of rain. Then the jobtakes three times as long as themuck is sloppy rather than firmand there is a lot more volume dueto the large amount of water mixedin with it.

Warm damp weather can bedisastrous for cattle housed inwinter. Just like people cooped upin close working conditionspassing on coughs and colds, cattle also transmit respiratorydisease between themselves andsome of them inevitably get

pneumonia. The majority of cattlethat succumb to the disease getover it, but some suffer such severelung damage that they die.Fortunately, this year, the wetweather has been accompanied bystrong winds which have whippedthrough the cattle sheds blowingfresh clean air in and the germsout. Most of the cattle have accessto a concreted outside area andonce the rain stops they like tostand out there in the breeze.

There is a constant battle to keepthe mud and muck from gettinginside the house. Our conservatorysports a collection of defences withold towels, mats and opened outhen food bags being used to soakup the mud from the wellies. Theold feed bags are great as theyabsorb a lot of wet and don’t breakup or stick to the wellies. Every fewdays I roll them all together, alongwith the newspapers by the radiatorwhere we park our boots andwellies, throw the lot on the woodburning boiler, chuck the towels inthe washer, vacuum up all the bitsof straw and start again with cleanbags and towels. Wet coats rotatefrom our backs onto hooks in thebeams in the kitchen and when dryback into the conservatory again.

Our collie dog Bessie loves to beout in the yard with Will, butequally she also loves to be lyingsnug and warm in the sitting roomin the evening with us. Well if yousaw the state of her at 5pm youwould wonder how she could everbe clean and dry enough.

It all starts with 2 buckets of warmwater and a car sponge. As soon asWill starts to run the water, Bessiegoes off and hides. Once backoutside Will calls her over and sheslinks across to him as slowly aspossible giving a low wag as shedoes which indicates that shereally doesn’t want to be washed.Eventually she gets there and thewashing can begin. Slowly a white

tummy, chest and legs emerge andshe can escape to have a goodshake. Then a vigorous dryingwith an old towel and she is fit tocome into the kitchen. After a fewcircuits of the kitchen she liesdown on her mat and proceeds towash herself. By 7pm she is dryenough to join us as we settledown for the evening. A quick callfrom Will and she rushes in andthrows herself down on a cleantowel next to her master’s feet. She looks up adoringly, thebathing long forgotten, that is untiltomorrow when the wholeprocedure will be repeated again.

Roll on an early warm dry spring!

Your countryside needs you!

We are a national charity with 90 years’ experience ofprotecting the countryside. At the Leicestershire branch ofthe Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) wecampaign for a beautiful and thriving countryside, workingto protect and enhance it for current and future generations to live in and enjoy.

We know that there is a critical need for more homes and campaign to ensure these are in appropriatenumbers and locations with good design and layout. CPRE, nationally, has done research that challengeslocal authority housing targets imposed by Government. What happens is a vicious circle:

Unrealistic housing targets are set.Councils are forced to allocate greenfield land to meet the targets.Developers cherry-pick the most profitable greenfield sites.Building takes place slowly, to keep prices high.So the housing targets are missed…… and councils are forced to allocate more land for building.

Developers again target the most profitable sites.

CPRE believes that developments should be on previously used or brownfield sites not open countryside orgreenfield sites.

One of CPRE’s greatest achievements nationally was the implementation of Greenbelt policy in the mid50s. However there is no Greenbelt in Leicestershire and 83% of our countryside has no designatedprotection so we are intent on tackling this issue. We believe Neighbourhood Planning has a positive effecton communities deciding future development and protecting important green spaces.

Our place on the board of Leicestershire Rural Housing Association gives us an insight into the provisionof affordable homes in villages. Helping tackle the shortage of homes for local people who are being pricedout of their communities is a priority for us. We back the work of this specialist provider who hascompleted over 200 homes for local people to occupy in the past 10 years. However, there is muchmore to do.

Farmers are at the centre of our countryside and their stewardship of it makes up its unique character. Wesupport sustainable farming and outdoor livestock production as the best way to maintain a thriving andliving countryside.

How we travel and plan transport also impacts on our environment. Transport planning needs to prioritisethe proximity of new homes, jobs, shops and services to public transport. Storage and distribution hubsshould have ready access to the railway network rather than rely on our already overburdened road system.

We need to reduce the amount of energy we use and the waste we produce, at the same time ensuringresponsible use of our natural resources. There is a need for more information from both the governmentand the industry to better understand the effects of Fracking on our countryside.

As a small band of dedicated volunteers in Leicestershire we welcome enquiries from anyone in the countyabout rural matters as above.

For further information please contact:- Richard Windley (Vice-chairman) on 07970079855 [email protected]

SCOGUI Visits Diseworth Heritage CentreOn the 6th December, SCOGUI – Loughborough

University’s Student Scouts and Guide Club – came to help outwith some of the cleaning and maintenance tasks at DiseworthHeritage Centre.

Upon arrival we were put straight to work climbing upand replacing the battery on the clock in the main hall beforesplitting up to tackle various tasks around the building. Mainlyworking outside, windows, frames, doors, shutters and evendrainpipes were cleaned as we were tasked with removing thedirt and grime caused by the glorious British weatherthroughout the year. The upstairs windows were cleanedinside and out as well as the entrance porch.

Thanks should be given toNikki and Martin who werealways on hand with tea andbiscuits for us as we cleaned.

It was a great opportunity to be able to assist with keeping a piece of history alive for futuregenerations to enjoy and we hope that the Heritage Centre remains a community hub for manyyears to come.

Much like the Heritage Centre, SCOGUI has a rich history of its own and the first record ofus appears in 1953 where the club was set up to fosterScouting and Guiding within the setting of higher education. To this day SCOGUI has continued the tradition of not onlyproviding an outlet whereby current members of the Scoutingand Guiding community can continue to take part in activitieswhich have formed the foundation of their youth; but by alsooffering the chance for individuals who are new to theScouting and Guiding community to gain an insight into themarvellous array of activities that are on offer. SCOGUI hasa diverse and eclectic programme and has a reputation fornever missing out on an opportunity to have fun –regardless ofhow bizarre the pastime is.

SCOGUI currently has 25 members and takes an activerole both within the university and externally by organisingevents such as an annual night-time incident hike for the localscout and guide district.

I hope that this has given a little insight into the world ofSCOGUI and I would like to conclude by thanking Nikki andMartin once again for their hospitality and wish them all thebest with their continuing endeavour.

Alex Hawkins, SCOGUI Publicity Officer

Diseworth’s Art and Craft GroupThe Art and Craft group has continued to meet every otherTuesday throughout 2015. As we gossip over tea, coffee andbiscuits wonderful creations emerge, each person having theirown individual preferences for a wide range of crafts. There aresome amazing knitters, these people I watch in awe. All I

managed to produce, many years ago,was a very plain jumper that therecipient could have worn as a dress, with sleeves down to their knees!

There have been some beautifulembroideries, tapestries, cards, decorated ornaments, paintings in acrylic and watercolour aswell as willow weaving andrug making.

Our last meeting beforeChristmas saw someprojects completed and

everyone was thrilled with the results. I took somephotos of these. Not everything is a success, but thereare always friends to offer help and advice, we learnfrom each other.

The group continues to meet from the 12th Januaryand anyone can join in, just bring along whatever youare interested in and you areaway, it would be really nice tosee some men join in too!

There will be an exhibition of the Art and Craftgroup’s work for everyone to see, in the Church, duringOpen Gardens on 3rd July 2016. Nicky Miller

Health PageGO EASY ON THE FRUCTOSE

Sucrose, glucose and fructose are carbohydratesreferred to as simple sugars. Glucose and fructoseare monosaccharides that are the building blocksof sucrose which is a disaccharide. Sucrose is bestknown as table sugar and is usually obtained fromprocessed sugar cane or sugar beet. Once in thebody, sucrose is broken down into glucose and fructose by the enzyme betafructosidase. Theglucose is ready for use immediately by all cells in the body and is the main energy source for allliving things. The fructose has to be processed by cells in the liver before it is turned into glucoseand some of it is usually made into fat during the process.

Fructose does not cause insulin to be released, nor does it stimulate the production of leptinwhich is the key hormone that regulates energy intake, in other words it sends a message to thebrain that stops us feeling hungry. For this reason high intakes of fructose are implicated inweight gain, especially fat laid down around the waist. This is because fructose behaves morelike a fat in the body than any other carbohydrate. Most fruits and some vegetables contain bothglucose and fructose in roughly even amounts and if eaten in their fresh and natural state inmoderation are generally good for health. Problems start where lots of processed foods areconsumed, especially those high in sucrose, corn syrup and white wheat flour. Then there are softdrinks which are easy to consume and very high in fructose. Even fruit juices should be treatedwith caution as they again contain high amounts of fructose. All these foods should be taken insmall amounts as in high amounts they flood the body with fructose, causing the liver cells tobecome overwhelmed. This can result in oxidative stress and inflammation which if it occursregularly over a long period of time can result in similar damage to the liver as is caused byalcohol.

So what can we eat that will result in a diet low in fructose? The first place to start is to eatprotein in the form of meat (but avoiding processed ones like ham or bacon), eggs, fish, beansand pulses. Also include healthy fats such as rapeseed or olive oil but not processed ones likevegetable oil. Include lots of green leafy vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, sprouts, kale andthings like onions, peppers, mushrooms, celery and salad ingredients such as lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and beetroot. Include some fruit in the diet, especially soft fruit in season, bananas, oranges, apples, grapes, pears, melon, figs, apricots and even some of the sweeter fruits such aspeaches and mangos occasionally. Dairy foods are fine in moderation. Nuts, herbs and spicesare also beneficial. Caution is recommended with potatoes, rice, pasta, honey and maple syrup.Basically, by eating a diet rich in good balanced natural foods and avoiding processed foodsincluding added sugar, except for a treat, we can keep our fructose consumption down to a levelthat is safe for our body.

Talking of treats, very dark chocolate is fine as is a small amount of dried fruit but go easy on thesweets, biscuits, cakes and sweet chocolate.

Village Hall ReportSince the last report we have had the Annual Beer Festival,Christmas Fair, an Incognosis concert and Emily’s Christmas CraftNight – thanks must go to those involved in organising these popular, high quality and successful events.

If you attended the Beer Festival you can probably remember little ofthe night or nights (!) but you all seemed to enjoy yourselves anyway – Jim & John provided us with agreat choice of beers and high quality entertainment. The pre-Christmas Incognosis gig was great valueonce again and I’m sure those that were able to get tickets had a good night.

Diseworth enjoys the benefit of a traditional Village Hall managed on your behalf by an extremelyhardworking Committee and friends who organise a varied programme of entertainment as well as carryingout a number of essential repairs and improvements.

An example of the above is the new Coffee Bar, held on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. All proceedsare spent on essential projects for the Hall – those run last year paid for the new blinds you will see in thefront toilets. The next item on the ‘list’ is a new cooker hob and we have to thank Anna and the Boxing DayFun Run for the £75 donation towards this target.

Mobile Support Serviceheads to Leicestershire

Vista, the local sight loss charity, has aMobile Support Service for older people at risk of developing sight loss in Leicestershire. The service, in partnership with Leicestershire County Council, is touring the county in aspecially designed mobile unit, providing information, support and advice. DuringFebruary it will visit a variety of locations across Leicestershire.

1.8 million people are living with significant sight loss in the UK, and evidence suggeststhat over 50 per cent of sight loss is due to preventable or treatable causes. Vista’s MobileSupport Service aims to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of sight loss, theimportance of early diagnosis and the links between lifestyle and sight loss.

Manned by friendly staff, the vehicle features an open plan welcome area, leaflet displayand a seating area for individual consultation and support. During their time on board, visitors can:

Learn how a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of sight loss, theimportance of regular sight tests and spotting conditions earlyFind out more about the support and services available through Vista

Discover equipment and technologies that can support people with sightloss.

The programme also supports older people already experiencing sight loss, enabling themto access dedicated information, advice and support in their local communities.Paul Bott, Vista’s Chief Executive, said: “This exciting project enables us to increaseawareness of avoidable sight loss, in particular amongst older people. We believe thatadvice and support should be available in even the most rural communities, so we’vetaken our services on the road.”A full list of dates, locations and times is available on our website atwww.vistablind.org.uk/mobilesupport

Theyworked hard raising £5000between them to join, and say a bigThank You to everyone whosupported them, attending eventssuch as the fish and chip bingo, coffee mornings and flowerdemonstration.

Back on home ground, girls spent aWater Activity weekend at the Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre. We also congratulateHarriet who successfully passed her Camp Permit, allowing her to take up to 8 Guidesaway.

Our Body Shop Party allowed us to raise £25 (whilst providing us with an opportunity topamper ourselves!). Daisy the Cow put in an appearance at Kegworth Easter Market andDiseworth Village Show as we continue fundraising to reduce the cost to attend theInternational Scout and Guide Camp at Whatton House.

Through the Eyes of a Basketmaker:The Growth and Uses of WillowI make baskets out of any flexible plant material. One of my favourites andthe most versatile is willow. It comes in many different colours, shapes andstrengths, and because of its bendy qualities it has been used for thousands ofyears to make strong and long lasting basketry.

The plant has ageneric name ofSalix, but has manyother names, whichindicate the natureof the materials aswell as their uses.Names like sallies, osiers, withies, whips and rodsdenote the usesfrom abasketmakingperspective, as dothe names for thesizes of basketwillow, for example‘luke’, ‘three penny’and ‘middleboro’.

Apart from basket work, historically, willow was used to make clog bottoms, itcan be split and was made into fence posts and rails. The variety SalixCoerulea has always been used to make cricket bats when the trees mature atabout 14 years. Nowadays scientific research has shown that willow has manyother properties, leading to exciting advancements in pharmaceuticals, and itis also used as an energy source and building material.

New varieties such as Bowles Hybrid and Swedish Clone, which originate fromthe fast-growing Salix Viminalis, have been developed to supply thecommercial world of biomass willow as they can be used as a renewable fuel togenerate power. All of the Salix varieties come from four hundred speciesfound world wide, some reaching maturity as tall trees, some growing asshrubs found in sub-tropical areas, and some growing only a few centimetersfound in Alpine regions.

Page 42: Issue 213 February 2016 · Carpet Cleaning Breedon Carpet Care 01332 865565 ... Dog Walking T ania 07976 971162 Dry Cleaning Julie at Scorchers 01332 853457 or 07973 354695 Electrician

Willows are easily propagated. They can be grown by simply making cuttingsfrom original stock and pushed into the ground. It takes up to five yearsbefore these cuttings become a productive plant, from which biomass isharvested as a short rotation coppice (cut every two years) or harvestedannually for basketmaking.

Forbasketmaking Iuse differentwillows fordifferentpurposes. Someof the thickerwillow rods haveuses for largesculpturestructures aswell as uprightsfor big logbaskets. Somehave veryflexible stemsand are moresuitable asweavers, often

in beautiful natural colours. They can be woven ‘green’, freshly cut, or driedand resoaked. Sometimes I use willow with the bark stripped off; white willow, which has been peeled when the rods are green, or dried willow, which isboiled and therefore stained from the tannins in the bark. These strippedwillows need a short soaking time to make them pliable for weaving.

I spend a great deal of time sorting the willow for sizes, which is an importantpart of the basketmaking process. Small rods are used for weavers and largerones for framework of the structure. There are interesting ways to work thewillow, it can be easily split with a minimum of tools and can be twisted intorope, as well as woven in a variety of patterns.

Commercial applications of willow growing have recently attracted attentionbecause the material can be easily grown on poorer soil, and have manyattributes. For example, it is a sustainable source for low-carbon powerproduction, greenhouse gas reduction, and natural water filtration systems, aswell as being useful for noise reduction on roads. Extracts from the willowbark are also used within medicine for the manufacturing of aspirin, as well asin pioneering studies where it is being trialled within the development ofcancer drugs.

31

The future of willow is looking promising, shown by the increasing number oforganisations growing it commercially and individuals growing it for fun. As acraft material there is a resurgence of basketmaking, sculpture and willowfencing. Additionally, there is now a clear demand for large quantities of thematerial as a result of its many uses from fuel to medicine, and as a buildingmaterial and ornamental plant for gardens and parks.

THE DOG OF MONTY DON

He follows at his master’s heelOr lolls about where the sun

has shoneA lazy, languorous Labrador

The dog who follows Monty Don.

Sometimes he lounges on a benchAnd often seems to go to sleep

He twitches in his reverieAs if he hunted forests deep.

But when the cameras havegone home

He sets about with spade and hoeAnd reads encyclopaedias

That tell him how plants thriveand grow.

He prunes the apples, tendsthe bees

He stakes the runners, digs a trenchHe does not look like that same dogThat you saw lounging on the bench.

Imagination you might thinkThe whole darn thing is just a con

But who’d not want a dog like that? The dog who follows Monty Don.
