The relationship between BRI-CON and VERDERIO dates back to the year 2000, when Mr. Bernardo Viganò, rabbit breeder and slaughterer boasting long experience and tradition, buys his first skinning machines from VERDERIO for his processing plant located in Casatenovo, in the heart of Brianza. Ever since the relationship grew stronger and in the following years the slaughterhouse was progressively renovated and equipped with new automatic machines and systems: Pneumatic forelegs cutter, Hind legs cutter, Pneumatic opening machine, Ultrasound shackle washer, By-products evacuation system, Live handling plant with

Lifter and Crate washer. In 2010 the Rotating opening machine replaces the pneumatic model. The plant has a production capacity of 1200 units per hour.

Our relationship with Grupo SOLE BERTRAN started more than thirty years ago if we consider that the very first automatic machines were installed at that time at CAILLOR, located in Sarbazan in France, and which today is part of the group. The merger of the companies SOLE and CAILLOR took place in 2006 and ever since the group is unquestionably the sector leader and the first producer of quails in Europe. The group mission is pursuing and providing quality and VERDERIO has always played an important role in achieving that goal. The words of the company owner Mr. Jose Sole Bertran reveal the following:

“Our relationship, as this is what it is, though only professional, dates back to the end of the eighties. In those days we hardly were a little more than a small quail farm with considerable growth margins and ambitions going beyond our production capacity. For a few years we remained in the shadows, then sales dramatically increased and forced

us, in the mid nineties, to fully modernize our production line. We called Verderio, who proved being extremely reliable and expert since the beginning: his deep knowledge of the various production processes, combined with a significant understanding of the market requirements, allowed us to increase our production by more than 100% while converting our processing line into one single versatile, multi-purpose slaughtering chain fit for three bird species (quail, spatchcock and partridge). Today as in the past our goal is constant improvement allowing us to offer superior quality products through the steady evolution of the production process. Verderio is the natural expression of our desire to find excellence in partnership. And our relationship is as vital as in the past. Verderio is our prime partner for the new projects concerning our plants modernization as well as for the identification of new investments regarding the future of our company.”

VERDERIO is as vital as in the past and there has been considerable continuity over the years. In 2014 VERDERIO installed the new Eviscerator for spatchcocks and this year the Neck-cracker for spatchcocks at URGASA located in Juneda. Also in 2015 VERDERIO installs the Final Control Machine for quails at AEROPIC located in Lleida. CAILLOR renovated the picking section thanks to the installation of a Discomatic picker which provides an excellent picking yield. Adjusting is easy because it is possible to do that on each single bank and the machine is almost ordinary maintenance-free. Noise is limited and washing extremely fast. At present a new plant is being built on site: the new ultramodern CAILLOR plant will allow to slaughter 11,000 bph and will boast the installation of the most recent technological novelties. VERDERIO is playing a strategic role in the construction of such ambitious project.

BERTI PIERO

STRENGTHENING THE RELATIONSHIP WITH VERDERIO

The company BERTI PIERO, located in Forlimpopoli and boasting a long-lasting experience and family tradition, has been involved in rabbit processing for over 50 years in order to offer a top quality product to consumers. At the beginning of the nineties the company undertakes the breeding activity as well and creates a specific sector which later makes it the prime player of the European rabbit breeding sector. The final product top quality at BERTI PIERO is guaranteed through the use of modern technologies in the meat processing plants. VERDERIO, the company historical supplier, played and keeps on playing a crucial role in the production of a superior-quality product. Over the last 25 years VERDERIO has designed, manufactured and installed machinery and equipment at BERTI PIERO’s rabbit processing plant in Forlimpopoli, while renovating and enlarging the rabbit

processing rooms. In June 2015 the plant was completely renovated and equipped with new modern machines and equipment to process 2,000 units/hour: automatic live handling line for containers with depalletizer, conveyor belts, crate washer and palletizer, stunning system complying with the Regulation EC 1099/2009, equipped bleeding, skinning and eviscerating lines, by-products evacuation system. We are proud of having played an essential role in the company modernization and we firmly believe that this will result in BERTI PIERO’s successful future.

NEW

RABBIT ELECTRONIC STUNNING SYSTEM

On January 1, 2013 the Regulation EC 1099/2009 entered into force.

The directive 93/119/EC establishes common mimimum standards for the protection of animals at the time of slaughter or killing in the Community. By law “...electrical stunning equipment shall be fitted with a device which displays and records the details of the electrical key parameters for each animal stunned. The device shall be placed so as to be clearly visible to the personnel and shall give a clearly visible and audible warning if the duration of exposure falls below the required level. These records shall be kept for at least one year.” The main goal of the Directive is guaranteeing higher welfare to animals to be slaughtered or killed. The protection of animals at the time of slaughter or killing is a matter of public concern that affects consumers’ attitude towards agricultural products. Improving the protection of animals at the time of slaughter contributes to higher meat quality and indirectly has a positive impact on occupational safety in slaughterhouses. The correlation between animal welfare and food safety was internationally recognized by the European Food Safety Authority. In accordance with the EC Regulation No. 1099/2009, we developed our new head-only electrical stunning control board which is a further development of the already existing stunning system we launched the first some years ago. The certainty of the energy quantity given to the animal head reduces the possibility of stressing the animal during stunning thus guaranteeing the highest meat quality. The new stunning system allows to set the parameters regarding the stunning voltage and frequency, is equipped with a visual and acoustic warning device in the event of wrong stunning, records the values related to each single animal stunning, is provided with color touchscreen and voltage visual warning

lamp, provides a three-level access (user – manager – supervisor), and on request can be complete with a PC interface system and correct working inspection system.

Page 7: no. 1 INNOVATING JOURNAL FOOD...processing was mainly manual as elsewhere in Spain. There were no machines replacing operators working in slaughtering plants: the automation of slaughtering

In 1985 concern and foresight leads a group of Spanish rabbit breeders to create COGAL: it’s the beginning of an ambitious project of modernization of rabbit meat processing. For almost twenty years now, VERDERIO has been cooperating with COGAL boosting its growth: the installation of machines, equipment, systems and plants made those ambitions real. The words of Mr. Juan Castro Rodriguez, General Manager, reveal the important role played by VERDERIO in the company growth:

““When we first purchased from VERDERIO, more than twenty years ago, rabbit processing was mainly manual as elsewhere in Spain. There were no machines replacing operators working in slaughtering plants: the automation of slaughtering was nothing but a dream and it just existed in our imagination. Yet, over the last twenty years, our production capacity has increased by over 400%. Even if it is true that recently the development in demand increasingly led to diversifying the offer of rabbits, the commercial success of our group would have never reached such results in such a short time without relying on Verderio as a partner. Meeting them meant finding competence

and willingness to adapt their projects to our needs; they not only promptly supplied us with innovative processing systems and techniques, but supported us with advice regarding maintenance and looked further into the future technologies and their achievements. In a few words we found they were highly motivated in the achievement of shared objectives. We definitely do want to maintain our partnership with Verderio: we trust them and feel confident they will allow us to achieve more and more ambitious and satisfying goals.”

In this regard, over the last seven years, the cooperation with VERDERIO has been growing stronger. Indeed, in 2008 COGAL chooses to install the new automatic machines Rabbit leg skin puller and Rabbit leg skinning machine. The former cuts the legs skin while not touching on the meat and preparing the following operation which is carried out by the latter which skins both legs while

not damaging the skin. These machines can reach the considerable capacity of 2,800 units per hour and never need to be adjusted according to the various rabbit size in the same lot. They are sturdy and reliable thus reducing costs. They are made of stainless steel and technopolymers, thus easily washable. They guarantee a high safety standard, fruit of meticulous and accurate design. Another automatic machine was later added to the previous ones, that is the automatic Hock unloader which prepares and facilitates the work of the operator in charge of the following phase that is skin and tail cutting. ln 2011 COGAL renovates the rabbit processing plant located in Rodeiro by installing the Container and crates handling plant. The new system for the transportation of rabbits in crates placed in containers speeds up loading procedures in the farms and enhances the quality of animals, facilitates and relieves the operators’ work and reduces management costs. Then in 2011 COGAL decides to renovate the Portuguese processing plant INTERCOELHO located in Torres Vedras and having a production capacity of 1200/1300 units per hour. The new slaughtering and cooling section is installed along with the rabbit

in-line weighing system which has been designed to offer a complete control and supervision platform for the processing plant from hanging to portioning and packaging. The weighing system is totally modular and flexible in order to guarantee a customized solution according to the various needs. Data are displayed as needed: on PC or mobile terminal devices, in the form of tables or charts.Mr. Juan Castro Rodriguez states that COGAL wishes to maintain the partnership with VERDERIO because he feels confident VERDERIO will allow them to achieve more and more ambitious and satisfying goals.

ALEMAS CHOOSES VERDERIO AS OFFICIAL PROVIDER OF SLAUGHTERING EQUIPMENT

ALEMAS, a reputable Italian producer of chicken, spatchcocks, guinea fowls and rabbits, located in Camucia di Cortona, decides to renovate its plant in 2010 starting with the installation of a Killer and of a Ventor for chicken having a production capacity of 6,000 bph. In spring 2011 an overhead structure is installed to support a water-solids separating filter and a compactor along with a slaughtering by-products suction system. In summer 2012 VERDERIO installs the new rabbit portioning machine with conveying belts having a production capacity of 900 heads per hour independently on the type of portioning. This rotating machine is operated by only one unskilled operator in compliance with safety regulations and without endangering the operator’s health. The machine portioning heads are designed and manufactured according to each single customer’s requirements. Last February further renovation was carried out to enhance the plant efficiency.

GROUPE LDC, VALUES AND DEVELOPMENT

A LONG-LASTING PARTNERSHIP

LDC was born in 1968 from the merger between SA LAMBERT having its seat in Sablé sur Sarthe (Sarthe) and SA DODARD CHANCEREUL having its seat in Saint Denis d’Anjou (Mayenne). The same activity, poultry slaughtering, in complementary geographical sectors had resulted in this approaching. Ever since the activity has never ceased to evolve towards portioning and elaborated products production. And, as supplier VERDERIO embodies the values of the Groupe LDC......quality, work, innovation, rigour, respect, simplicity. Cooperation started more than twenty years ago when the first automatic machines for quail evisceration were installed at CAILLES ROBIN and ever since never stopped. The words of the President of CAILLES ROBIN, Mr. Guy Prod’Homme reveal that:

“The relationship with VERDERIO has always relied on mutual esteem and confidence. The quality of our relationship is based on their listen-and-learn philosophy and on the knowledge of the specific features of our profession. We highly appreciate the material quality, the respect of the equipment during the installation phase, the time devoted to projects. Moreover VERDERIO takes care of follow-up, provides technical advice and guarantees the upgrading of existing equipment. That is why Verderio is our ideal

partner to reach for process development and innovation. We keep on placing our trust into the hands of the people who improved our everyday while advancing in the quality of products.”

In 2008 CAILLES ROBIN consolidates the relationship with VERDERIO and buys a dust suction system at hanging. The benefits for animal welfare and better healthiness of the air inhaled by the operators at hanging are well known. In the same year the company buys a quail Contromatic picker used as the first machine of the picking line. It is an innovative, performing machine whose maintenance and cleaning operations are easy and fast. In 2009 the company CAILLES ROBIN has a new 6,000-bph quail

processing line developed by VERDERIO. The plant is provided with a container loading,

16 17

overturning, washing system, with a stunning and automatic killing system, with a scalders, a Contromatic picker and a Discomatic picker, with automatic eviscerating machines and with a by-products suction and evacuation system. The plant can count on a

remote assistance service to detect, identify and solve possible problems on-line. In 2009 the company SNV (rabbit division) located in La Chapelle d’Andaine, renovates its slaughtering plant having a production

capacity of 2,400 uph. The renovation includes the installation of the entire series of rotating automatic machines to skin rabbit legs and open rabbit abdomen as well as the installation of the by-products suction and evacuation system. Later on that year a brand new and modern rabbit portioning system is installed allowing to portion 2,000 uph. It is a fully-automatic, modular, highly-flexible and safe plant. The system is controlled by a PC to choose, programme and store the various portioning types used. In 2010 the company CAILLES ROBIN is equipped with a wholly-automated live animals reception zone and with a kiling system using CO2 in compliance with the new European regulation regarding animal welfare.

BRUNO SIEBERT

KEEPS ON RELYING ON VERDERIO

Astra Farms was initially founded in 1976 with the aim of supplying Saudi Arabia’s armed forces with a variety of food products. Today the company, having its operational headquarters in Tabuk KSA and with decades of experience, prides itself on being one of the largest and most reputable quail producers and suppliers in the world, providing a broad spectrum of vegetable grain fed-based quail products, as well as employing state-of-the-art technology in the breeding and packing of its products. As one of the industry leaders, Astra Farms produces and packs the highest quality quail, from egg to finished product through its partnership with VERDERIO, the leading processing plant provider to install a modern slaughterhouse for quails, with an estimated dressing capacity of 10,000 birds per hour. The cutting-edge slaughterhouse offers the finest full automated process capabilities available from eviscerating stage and sterilization until the birds are transferred to the packing area. In addition, the fully automated slaughtering system is entirely operated from a central control unit to ensure that the highest health standards are being set in all stages of the process. The unique collaboration between Astra Farms and VERDERIO will improve production performance year over year to meet the high demand of quail in the market, and will surely ensure that Astra Farms continue to provide quality products to its respective customers. The plant installed by VERDERIO totally performs the various processing phases: live handling, picking, eviscerating, automatic rehanging and in-line

weighing, cooling, packaging, by-products and feathers evacuation. In the interview to “Euroasia Industry magazine” Mr. Samir Kousa, General Manager of Farms, stresses the importance of VERDERIO’s intervention on Tabuk site:

“The company has made significant strides in its award-winning quail and poultry divisions. ASTRA FARMS was the first to introduce quails to the Saudi Arabian market and has gone on to achieve the impressive status of the largest quail farm in the world. When we last spoke in 2009, we were producing approximately 16 million quails per annum.

However, we are currently in the process of expanding our quail operation. The first stage of the project is already complete and has increased our productivity by almost two-fold. Upon completion, this expansion should elevate our overall capacity to 40 million units per year“.

At the very beginning of this year the rabbit processing plant located in Baja, Hungary, was completely renovated and modernised. In 2008 Mr. Johann Gerber became the new owner of the company together with Mr. Sándor Ferenc and Mr. Szalai Attila who are rabbit risers. Mr. Johann Gerber, Managing Director, is a qualified agricultural-economist with Swiss nationality but living in Hungary and he is a skilled grower. Since the beginning he planned the company growth through the modernization of the production process in compliance with the rules imposed by animal welfare in order to offer a healthy and high-quality product. In January 2015 VERDERIO installed the new processing plant having a capacity of 1,700 heads per hour. The plant is made up of the following sections: live handling, stunning, skinning, eviscerating, ultrasound shackle washer, in-line weighing system, by-products and skins evacuation system. VERDERIO, already present and

known to the Hungarian rabbit sector, has further worked in the same direction.

Founded at the heart of Alsace, France, more than thirty years ago, the family business LES VOLAILLES BRUNO SIEBERT owes its reputation to a demanding policy for quality and freshness. As a matter of fact the company is equipped with the most modern slaughtering technologies. VERDERIO started its cooperation with BRUNO SIEBERT more than ten years ago and installed machinery and equiment both for chicken (scalders) and rabbits (700 uph processing line with by-products evacuation plant). In 2015 VERDERIO has supplied a new compactor.

GAME FARM

CHOOSES VERDERIO TO MODERNISE ITS QUAIL PROCESSING PLANT

GAME FARM was founded in 1975 in Galston, Australia and it is the largest multi-species game bird producer in the Southern Hemisphere. Game Farm has established itself as the market leader through its commitment to investing in state of the art processing facilities. In April 2009 GAME FARM began to modernise its production site, which had already been previously equipped with VERDERIO’s machines: a brand new quail eviscerator is installed. In February 2012 the modernization is completed with a new quail ventor and a new quail final investigation machine. This new generation of machines reaches at the Australian processing plant the capacity of 6,000 bph (but the most powerful version is capable of reaching a capacity of 10,000 bph). The machines are equipped with the new positioning system which automatically positions the bird while compensating for the differences in the animal size within the

same production lot. These machines strictly comply with the European legislation in terms of safety and they are specifically designed to reduce maintenance and raise hygiene standards.
