DharmaAssistant Managing Editor

President's NoteDear fellow MAE friends,

On behalf of the 32nd Management Committee of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Club, I would like to take this opportunity to convey my sincere greeting to all of you. The School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Club committee was assembled by gathering enthusiastic and outspoken undergraduates to represent the MAE student community. Under the leadership of 24 main committees and 112 sub-committees, the club is devoted to promote welfare, social, educational and sporting activities amongst MAE undergraduates. As an academic constituent club, we provide the best Past Year Paper (PYP) solutions to better your understanding in specific modules. These solutions can be easily accessed from our website (www.maeclub.com). Besides that, academic-related events such as stream talks, industrial visits and alumni sharing session are held from time to time to sharpen students’ micro and macro skills.

As the saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. We embrace university life vibrancy, thus exciting events are laid out throughout the academic year with the aim of relieving your hectic student life. One of the biggest events organized by our club is MAE Week, which lasted for 3 days during week 3 this year. Live band performances, tee shirts giveaway, exciting games and lucky draw were scheduled, making the event one the highlights in NTU.

On top of that, we are committed in providing welfare exclusively to the MAE student community and I confidently say that MAE Exam Welfare Packs Giveaway is one of the most anticipated welfare giveaways in NTU. At the same time, Birthday Giveaways are held occasionally over the academic year to celebrate our MAE undergraduates’ birthdays. Our motto is to enhance the MAE undergraduates’ university life by crafting one of a kind university experience for you. With this in mind, we spearheaded MAE Club’s very first Feedback Session to gather opinions of MAE undergraduates with regards to the club’s operation and school management. Should you miss the session, please feel free to share your views or suggestions via email ([email protected]) or MAE’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ntumaeclub). Your opinion is most welcome and we would attend to your concerns accordingly.

Last but not least, I would like to thank you for your continual support for the club and cordially invite you to participate in upcoming events. Your support is instrumental in sustaining the club’s achievements. Thank you.Lee Ming Hor (Mr.)

“GEAR ON!” That’s the theme of MAE Week 2013, the latest and grandest event organized by the 31st Management Committee. Having thorough preparation from the summer holiday, MAE Week 2013 served all the MAE freshmen and seniors with lots of entertainment to begin the new academic year.

Held from 26th to 28th August at the Canopy K, this event was filled with tons of games, goodie bags, lucky draws, and so much more. The NTU CAC Jazz

and Blues also enlivened the crowds with their amazing performance at the beginning of the event, followed by the grand opening of MAE Week with Associate Chair Prof Ooi Kim Tiow as the guest of honor. The 31st Management Committee President, Tai Chi Loong, Eric, also delivered a short speech which officially opened the MAE Week 2013.

Just few moments later, Canopy K became more crowded with students queuing up for the free goodie bags and exclusive MAE Week T-shirt. In addition, students could also stand a chance to win the grand prize of the lucky draw by filling up the coupon from playing the carnival games. These games varied every day and students could play as many as they wanted.

The Basketball Shooting Competition, became one of the most popular games played by the students. One student even managed to reach the high score of 600, a staggering feat given the limited time.

The Hammer Challenge also became the center of attention where a heavy hammer must hit the base of a tall metallic bar hard enough in order for the small ball to bounce up and ring the bell. The strength of the participants were put to the test, their expressions reflected enthusiasm, struggle, and satisfaction.

Onstage games were also held where participants could win instant prizes such as flash disks. Among the winners of the stage games, Calvin, a freshman took a 16GB flash disk home by playing “Balls, Balls and Balls!” where participants were asked to catch balls made of newspaper using pails on their head. Crowds were also amused as the participants compete to be the fastest to finish a banana, McChicken and Apple Pie in the “ The Hunger Games” competition.

The last day of The MAE Week were the most awaited day where the June, July and August babies could collect presents. Moreover, moviegoers were also pleased as they could line up to purchase two movie tickets for only $10.

Finally, came the closing. First closing event is the awards giveaway for the best subcommittee in each portfolio. The best subcommittees received a certificate for their dedication and contribution for The MAE Club. Next was the lucky draw. Martin Febrian, a 3rd year student, was elated to be the lucky one to win the grand prize of Microsoft Surface RT. “I am very excited to attend this event, looking forward to other exciting MAE Club events” said Martin. The Jazz and Blues once again gave a pleasant performance and the event was closed by the photo taking of the 31st Management Committee.

Overall, this annual event managed did not only benefit the MAE students, but also the passersby who enjoyed the games, free coffee, and performances. The positive responses from the students made MAE Week as one of the most awaited events in the start of academic year.

MAE Club Investiture 2013 was the first event to be held by the newly formed 32nd Management Committee. Located in Lecture Theatre 1, this Investiture was attended by the Guest of Honor, A/P Lee Yong Tsui, the outgoing and incoming management committee, and the subcommittees

Investiture 2013It is a fairly good event. The new committee was introduced so that we know whom to approach when we have problems. I hope that the new committee can make improvements and I also hope there will be something to replace Nexus. It is such a pity that it was taken back by the university.

On Wednesday, September 25th 2013, LT1 was full of MAE students who were eager to see the most crucial

event in the MAE club. Investiture marks the beginning of MAE 32nd Committee’s duty to serve both the school and the students.

The event started as the Guest of Honor, A/P Lee Yong Tsui, entered the venue. All of the audiences stood up and applauded him as he reach his seat. Soon after that, a video of the previous year’s MAE events was played, showing all the effort of the 31st Management Committee for the students.

This year, instead of ribbon cutting, the main committees came up with new celebration idea. Prof. Lee was invited to the stage to change the number in the panel, from ‘31’ to ‘32’. Next, Eric, the president of the 31st Management Committee gave a short speech about his gratitude to Prof. Lee as the club advisor and to The 31st Management Committee for all of their hard work. Lastly, the incoming club president Lee Ming Hor gave Eric a token of appreciation.

Soon it was Prof. Lee’s turn to give a speech. He reminded the audiences about MAE club’s main role to serve the students and to help them perform well in academic

matters. Prof. Lee also mentioned about the recent loss of MAE Nexus which was due to budget constraint. At the end of the speech, he thanked both the incoming and outgoing management committees.

The investiture continued with appreciation ceremony, in which Prof. Lee gave each of The 31st Management Committee a certificate of appreciation. Following the appreciation ceremony, handover ceremony signified the passing down of responsibility from the outgoing to the incoming committee. The incoming management committee gave a token of appreciation to the outgoing committee of each respective portfolio.

After that, Lee Ming Hor , the incoming president of 32nd Management Committee, stepped forward to deliver a speech. First he expressed his gratitude for all of the attendees of the Investiture and expounded on his hopes and dreams for The 32nd Management Committee. At the end of his speech, he invited all of the audiences to join the MAE Games, the independent sports event held by the MAE Club.

Finally, the investiture ended with a photo-taking session of both the 31st and The 32nd Management Committee. The guests and audiences were served plentiful

Hopefully, the 32nd Management Committees are capable of serving the students better in the future. Good luck and

all the best!!!

It is enjoyable – the atmosphere is not tense and the committee are giving their best. For the 31st committee, I thank you for the one year of welfare you have provided. And for the 32nd, please work hard and face the challenge!

The MAE Games is an exciting event which is held annually by the school of MAE. This was the third time The Games were held and it provided a platform for the staff and stu-dents of MAE to get to know and compete against one another.

Located at Sports and Recreational Centre (SRC) in Nanyang Technological University (NTU), MAE Games

2013 managed to catch the interest of MAE students. Seated among the students were professors and staff of the school of Mechanical and Aerospace engineering (MAE), all geared up to participate in this annual event organized by the MAE club.

Lisan Purnama, the emcee, started the event by giving an brief introduction of MAE Games. It was followed by the opening speech from the Associate Chair (Academic), A/P Ooi Kim Tiow. The guests of honor of the MAE games 2013 were A/P Ooi and the Assistant Chair (Students), A/P Lee Yong Tsui. After the opening ceremony, MAE Games 2013 was officially started.

It was a tense and thrilling moment in the recreational games room. Amongst the players, A/P Lee Tsui Yong was the only faculty staff. He is a talented and proficient Chinese chess player who enjoys playing the sport since he was in secondary school.

The winner of the Chinese chess competition was Yue Kin Chong, a MAE student. When asked about the secret of his victory, he explained that he is a member of the Chinese Chess Club in NTU and he has a burning passion in the game. Having played three games before being announced as the victor, he indeed had great patience and wits.

For the Table-Tennis (men), the champion was the newest faculty member of the School of MAE, A/P Pham Quang Cuong.“Table-tennis is a sport like riding the bicycle, you will never forget how to play it,” he said . Having worked at faculties in France and Japan, he found that NTU is very unique to have organised games for the faculty staff and students to challenge one another in sports. Another member of the MAE faculty, A/P Yeo Song Huat, was an avid table-tennis player in his secondary school days. He admitted that competing with younger players made him feel young at heart and he enjoyed the rapport he built with his competitors which consist of fellow colleagues and students.

At the squash courts, A/P Tan Ming Jen and his colleague, A/P Yap Fook Fah were having a heated competition with each other. A/P Tan practiced regularly with A/P Yap every week. He also advised students to take up this sport as he found that it was an excellent stress buster in his undergraduate days in UK.

Under the hot sun, teams of 4 gathered at the basketball court. They played mercilessly and crowds gathered there to watch them play. One of the players, Lu Yang Charles, a MAE year 3 student, was eliminated at the very first round. He commented that this year’s players were all very competitive and it was tough to win. However, he did not regret taking part as his team tried their best and they found it a relaxing way to spend their Friday afternoon, taking time off from their hectic workload.

At around 6pm, the games ended and players gathered once again at the grandstand in front of SRC. Prizes were given out for the champion and the runner-up. The crowd laughed when A/P Lee made a joke about him being surprised that he did not win when he was handing the medal to Chinese chess runner-up. The MAE games 2013 was closed by a closing speech made by A/P Lee thanking all the organizing committee. Last but not least, delicious refreshments were provided for both the players and all the participants of MAE games 2013.

To celebrate and enhance the performance of the newly formed committee, MAE 32nd Management Committee went the extra mile for their subcommittees. Subcommittee Bonding Session is an annual MAE event to promote teamwork and foster friendship.

Subcommittee Bonding Session 2013

By 10.30 am, the subcommittees had gathered in Canopy K, whereby they were given the MAE

subcom t-shirt and gathered in their groups. The subcoms were divided into 2 groups (A and B) and there were 4 subgroups in each group. Two maincoms were assigned in each sub-group.

The Bonding Session was hosted by Renee and Foo Zhisheng. First they opened the session with an ice-breaking game. The group member introduced themselves and then they played a mini game. Then the losing subcommittees had to dof forfeit in funny ways such as seven wonders, peel banana, and cheers in front of the crowd.

Next, each subgroup was given 30 minutes to make a cheer. After having lunch, the subgroups had to perform on the stage. Just as expected, all of them managed to come up with creative cheer. After all of those battle cries, it was time for the Running Man Game.

This game is an Amazing Race that spans across the entire North Spine Complex. At every location, the subcoms were tasked by the maincoms who acted as the gamemasters.

The Running Man games consisted of the Word, All Flurry and Confusion game, Dizzy Ping Pong, Balloon, Copycat, Card Memory, Song Trivia, Lava, Throw and Catch, Racing Circle.

After the long yet exhilirating station games, the subcoms took a rest, chatting and eating dinner together. But the night was still not over yet. The maincoms had prepared 4 station games, but this time the subcoms were classified according to their portfolios. There were 5 teams which were P&P Bizmag, Sports, Social, MIT Logistics, Academic, and Welfare. Right after the MC a n n o u n c e d the start of the game, all of the s u b c o m s e x c i t e d l y w e n t to their r e s p e c t i v e stations.

In these station games, the portfolios had to compete with one another in 4 different games. Chopstick Kungfu, Newspaper Boat Centipede, Human Pinball, and Rolling Wheel were the games that the subcommittees enjoyed profusely. Nobody showed any sign of exhaustion as the subcoms rushed from stations to stations. Although some of them lost in the station games, they ended up smiling

and laughing about what they had done in the games. As they came back to gather at Canopy K, joy and cheerfulness could be seen all over the place.

Right after that, there was a word for friend session. A piece of A4 sized paper was taped at the back

of all maincoms and subcoms, and then they wrote encouraging words

to each other. With soothing music as the background,

this was one of the most memorable sessions of the event.

Before the prize giving session, Lee Ming Hor, the President of 32nd Management Committee, delivered

a short speech to express his gratitude to

all the participants. After that there was a prize giving

ceremony, followed by the photo-taking session in which the

subcoms formed the number 32 which signified the 32nd Committee of MAE Club.

Overall, the main purpose of this Subcom Bonding Session was to bond the subcoms and maincoms together so they can give their best effort to the club and more importantly the students. Dharma Pranata

Industrial Visit is commonly considered as one of the most important approaches for undergraduate engineering

students to learn more about practical industrial operations and to shape their own career blueprint ahead of graduation. Industrial visit is regularly conducted by MAE Club Academic portfolio every semester.

This time, 27 students came to FMC Technologies Singapore Pte Ltd, a leading global provider of technology solutions for energy industry. Mr Lum Weng Kit, the Technical Training Manager of FMC Technologies, welcomed the students and divided the visit into 4 parts.

During the Safety and Quality Moment, students were briefed about how important the safety issues are. No stepping across the yellow alert line in manufacturing workshop, no touching without permission; keep wearing helmet and uniform inside the plant. Safety is the major consideration in industrial sites.

Next, Mr. Lum delivered a short speech about FMC’s global connection and significant achivements. FMC’s business has expanded largely to Europe and America, and enjoys the reputation of leading-edge technologies. As students care more about looking for a job after graduation, Mr Lum presented detailed career possibilities for fresh graduates, starting from engineer to executive position. FMC scholarship was also introduced. Besides the financial reward, students can benefit a lot from FMC scholarship, especially valuable chances of internship and research. At the end of his presentation, Mr Tan Wei Soung, FMC’s subsea engineer of Product Design Division, shared his experience of winning the FMC scholarship. Audiences were more than pleased to find out that Wei Soung was one of NTU MAE graduates.

After that, the students were divided into groups of 5 for the workshop tour and were instructed to put on helmet and working vest. Two parts of workshop were successively shown, the Manufacturing shop and Assembly Shop. The manufacturing Shop is the place where heavy constructional elements of subsea systems, loading systems or separation systems are made and chilled. While Assembly Shop is for packing all elements together, enabling the final combination. Along the tour, students asked many questions about technical and professional matters. Future careers, engineers’ preferences, and starting salary were even discussed.

After such an informative tour, refreshments were provided. Instructors and visitors gathered together to review what they had learned for the day. Students realized that engineering allowed us to see the world from different sides. Industrial visit to FMC is another guide for the students to their future journey.

On October 30th 2013, MAE Club’s welfare portfolio prepared for the Birthday Giveaways outside N3 level 2 Glassdoor Entrance. At 11.30 AM, the birthday

giveaway officially started!

MAE Club Birthday Giveaways is an event whereby MAE Club gives presents to students whose birthdays are on September, October, November, and December. This is a tradition exclusively held for MAE students.

In order to receive the gifts, the students must play a game first. Participants were to slide a bottle across a platform, and where the bottle stops determine what prize they get.

Ten lucky winners claimed the top prizes, and they could choose an item out of the following: a Powerbank, a rechargeable battery, a wireless mouse, a wireless keyboard, and 5GB thumbdrives. The second prize are Daiso products such as stationeries, bags, notebooks, etc. Those who did not win any of the top prizes would get a bag of snacks.

At 3.30 PM, the birthday giveaway ended. It was a simple yet nice gesture and everybody enjoyed themselves. Happy birthday MAE babies!

MAE Club always does its best to improve the welfare of MAE students. Therefore, on the October 21st, 2013, we set up a feedback booth. It is located just outside LT1A. All students of our school are encouraged to participate and let their voices be heard.

The purpose of the feedback booth is to know more about what MAE students want to say and what they need. This year, we focus on general issues such as what new facilities students want, what kind of training and events they look forward to, and how MAE Club can improve the quality of existing events. We really appreciate all MAE students who had participated in this year’s feedback booth. As a representative of MAE students, MAE Club will address those issues based on what we conclude from the survey to the university. We hope that we can make our university life more meaningful.

On a side note, at the feedback booth, we also sold our exclusive MAE t-shirts at the price of $8 each. Students who had participated can play a raffle that gave out cool prizes such as Famous Amos cookies and even Starbucks cards!
