NIPER-Ahmedabad was established in the year 2007 at B. V. Patel

Pharmaceutical Education & Research Development (PERD) Centre as

the mentor institute. The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education

and Research (NIPER) had been created as a Centre of Excellence in im-

parting higher education, research and development in pharmaceutical

sciences and was the first Institute of its kind in country. The institute

was declared as an Institute of National Importance by Government of

India through an Act of Parliament, notified on 26th June 1998. The In-

stitute is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and Asso-

ciation of Commonwealth Universities.

To tone up the level of pharmaceutical education, research and management.

To produce leaders in the field and provide opportunities for training of future teachers,

research scientists and managers for the industry and the profession. To provide leader-

ship in pharmaceutical sciences, technology and management in India as well as in

countries of South East Asia, West Asia and Africa.

To be a center for innovation in pharmaceutical sciences and technology not only for the

industry but also for making in-depth studies on drug surveillance, functioning of commu-

nity and institutional pharmacies and pharmaceutical management.

NIPER - Ahmedabad has been doing its best to elevate the professionalism of all its students.

Placement of students who pass the M.S. (Pharm.) has been the top priority for the institute.

The placement ommittee comprises of a placement coordinators and students who look after

the placement activities which not only interacts with various organizations for job and pro-

ject placement of the students through on-campus/off-campus interviews but also molds them

into a positive attitude towards professionalism and provide them the strong backup of re-

sources, so that they acquire the essential expertise and attitude to excel.

The students for M. S. (Pharm.) program are admitted through a nationwide open competition entrance

examination (NIPER-JEE) conducted by NIPER. The prerequisite to appear for this examination is un-

dergraduate degree and GATE qualification. Once in a year the nationwide joint entrance examination is

conducted and from the merit list ofthis exam, the students are counseled and admitted to NIPER – Ah-

medabad. The admitted students represent the top cream of pharma graduates from India.

During two year of M. S. (Pharm.) program, they are further prepared and groomed to serve pharma sec-

tor in India and abroad.

NIPER – Ahmedabad admits students in the following 3 disciplines:

1. Biotechnology

2. Natural Products

3. Pharmaceutics

The first semester offers several common courses and the second semester offers several disciplines‟

specific courses the details of which are given here.

The third and fourth semester are reserved for significant research project. Therefore, the curriculum

reflects extensive training in common curriculum during the first semester, specialization curriculum

during the second semester and extensive research training during third and fourth semesters.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

The department is involved in the pharmacognostic, phytochemical and pharmacological studies of medicinal plants and

polyherbal formulations as well as structural modification of natural products for optimization of the biological activity. The

main areas in which the department is working are as under…..

Evaluation of plant extracts for neuroprotective, neuroregenerative, radioprotective, anti-malarial, anti-inflammatory,

anti-diabetic, anti-hypertensive, hepatoprotective, anti-implantation, anti-arthritis, anti-allergic, anti-asthmatic, anti-

microbial, anti-apoptotic and antioxidant activities and bioactivity guided fractionation leading to the isolation of active principles from herbal extracts.

Analogue synthesis of compounds derived from natural sources and screening for their reported biological activities

Formulation development of compounds as well as crude extracts from herbals for various therapeutic categories includ-

ing Glaucoma and Leishmaniasis

Pharmacokinetics and bioavailabilitiy studies of herbal drugs and formulations

Establishing extensive QA/QC parameters, carrying out stability studies of herbal drugs and formulations

Isolation of various marker compounds using different techniques viz., solvent extraction, column chromatography, preparative HPLC, preparative HPTLC.

Developing pharmacopoeial methods for standardization of herbal drugs, herbal extracts and polyherbal formulations.

The work includes developing methods of standardization for pharmacognostic and phytochemical evaluation of herbal drugs and formulations. The work also involves isolation and characterization of active principles / marker compounds

and establishing methods for the quantification of marker compounds using HPTLC, HPLC or GLC.

Developing methods for phytochemical evaluation by marker compound analysis and finger printing of herbal drugs /

formulations for herbal manufacturers.

The details of syllabus of M.S.(Pharm.)

Pharmaceutics are given here.

Department of Pharmaceutics is equipped with

state-of art facility for formulation development.

It has five students pursuing their doctoral stud-

ies along with 12 M.S. (Pharm.) students.

The department has developed various controlled

and sustained release formulations & technology

has been transferred to the industries. We have

pilot plant facility for conventional oral & trans-

dermal dosage forms & also initiated research on

Biomaterials and Nanotechnology. Moreover,

department is engaged in interdisciplinary pro-

jects for delivery of therapeutics of biotechno-

logical & natural origin.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

Many new chemical entities (NCE) are entering in to the market everyday due to efforts from R & D sector. These

NCEs are having complex physicochemical properties posing barrier for drug delivery. Biopharmaceuticals though

proved to be excellent therapeutically but are difficult to formulate due to their stability issues. Our department is

engaged in circumventing problems regarding drug delivery by formulating Conventional as well as Novel Drug

Delivery System (NDDS). Department focuses on following research areas:

Preformulation studies of various drugs including Drug-excipient incompatibility studies

Prototype formulation development studies

Challenges pertaining for studies on solid, semisolid and liquid Products/process

Molecular complexes to improve aqueous solubility of poorly water soluble drugs or

for Taste masking of bitter drugs.

Development of excipients with improved properties using co-process engineering technique;

Lipid based formulations for Improvement of oral bioavailability

Buccal & transdermal permeation enhancement of drugs by physical ,chemical means & combination thereof.

Nano-biopharmaceutics: Focus on drug targeting and shRNA delivery

Stability studies
